Too bad, so sad: Xbox Live Silver accounts get new limits photo

Having fun with that free Xbox Live Silver account? Sure, you can't play games with your buddies online, but you sure can compare high scores! And yeah, every now and then content will appear that's only initially available for Gold members, but that doesn't happen that often. What's that, Major Nelson? It's going to happen all of the time now? Crap.

Along with the new dashboard update, Silver members received a downgrade -- free content (like all of that great marketing, like demos, for instance) will be available exclusively to Gold members for one week. According to Major Nelson, "This is not done to annoy our Silver members -- limited time exclusive access to content is just one of the many benefits of having a Gold Xbox Live account."

Oh really? So being able to play games online wasn't a benefit enough? I'm not sure if Microsoft realizes it, but their competitor has been offering free online service (and much of the same content) since day one. When it came to the online space this generation, MS had it on lock with Xbox Live, but this move further widens the gap between it and Sony's service, and seems like a silly, greedy move.

Would someone other than Microsoft care to defend this?

Maybe the price is justified, actually. Don Mettrick needs to pay for his Peter Moore lessons, doesn't he?

@zoobot, wow.....that's definitely worth the price of one whole game.

I will be buying a replacement 360 after one more price drop, mine broke way before the 2nd warranty extension so I traded it in for credit. I also own a PS3, I miss Xbox Live, but I will not get it when I get my new 360. PSn is good enough. But I don't play much online anyway.

Yeah it is propaganda, because your bashing MS just because PSN is free, thats dumb. You don't really bash nintendo or sony for being greedy, you just bash them because of whatever mistake they happen to be making at the time, but again, with MS its always a money related issue, even when all the 360s were RRoD'n it still came down to "I'm pissed because of how much I payed for this thing".

And in all honesty you do not bash nintendo or sony near as much as MS, if you cannot admit that, then you are clearly in denial of it

And not all gamers have a big HDTV and surround sound, I play all my games on a 18" standard definition TV, I know HDTVS are popular and not that expensive now a days, but still, I find no reason to go HD when it makes non HD televisons chanells look like shit.

And you of all people should know anyway, not a lot of people have silver accounts, and the people that do have a silver account, well they are cheap! Or a person that has silver and just goes to the gamespot kiosk and uses a memory unit, goddamn thats cheap too.

In all, I just get annoyed when i see another D-Toid editor post a article about how "XBL is just as equal to PSN, and MS is greedy" Yeah i don't care if PSN and XBL are even, thats fine, but its when you have an article that clearly goes out of its way to refernce PSN in compareson to XBL, and then call MS greedy and selfish. And trying to say your not starting propaganda...look at what you wrote at the bottom of the post.

"Would someone other than Microsoft care to defend this?"

That says it all.

Meh, I'm not a huge online gamer anyway. To pay $50 a year to get my ass handed to me and get smacktalked to by 12 year olds doesn't really interest me. I'll just do LAN's and play with friends. Really annoying that Microsoft is gimping Silver Accounts right as I'm saving for a 360, but I'm not being forced to buy Live, so I won't.

If my first online experience had been the XBox, I probably wouldn't mind paying for Live, but I'm too used to online play for free on the PC and DS. The only MMO's I've played don't have mandatory subscription fees (Guild Wars, many a Korean MMO). There's not a compelling reason to me why I should pay for something I've gotten for free all along, especially since I'm dropping money for an HD set, a $350 console, probably an extra controller, and some games to go along with it. MS is profitting from everything but the tv.

I'm not ready to storm Redmond, but I do think that xbox live will need some work in the coming year to compete with the free services from Nintendo and Sony.

MS should occasionally give Gold members a free arcade game or MS points. Maybe a 15% discount on Arcade games? Work out a deal to offer some streaming TV networks (maybe a joint thing with G4).

There are plenty of ways to keep the paid xbox live viable, but they involve making Gold better, not handicapping Silver.

You mean the games and everything are free too? I don't think so.

But besides that, I quit, I'm hated.

I have Gold but I just don't see the point in it. I mean the only major difference is online play so I just don't see what that £40 is for. With silver you can still buy things on marketplace and the money comes in from there plus promotions and advertising. With gold you have a few exclusives but then they become available to silver members too.

If you think about games like UT and CS you can get the game and play online for free whenever. Not only that but you can set up dedicated servers, which obviously costs money. But the point is these games have been around for ages and they offer pretty much the same experience except you usually get less lag because it's not running off some 14 year olds DSL connection while he downloads insane amounts of pornography.

Think about how much money they get from Gold subscriptions and then think; does it really cost that much for some fileservers and trueskill?

This isn't really fair in any way, but let's be honest: if you have a 360, you should really be paying for Gold anyways. I never understand how people can live with just Silver. Maybe this will be the slap to the head they need to join the service.

Weedgan hasn't paid attention to the bitching on RetroforceGO! or anywhere else about Nintendo's pricing for Virtual Console downloads as well as their decision to release a metric fuckton of unplayable garbage and expect people to pay upwards of $5 for it.

Or the bitching about separate Friend Codes for every fucking game, for that matter.

I agree that the use of "M$" to describe Bill Gates & Co. has become trite, but you're not paying attention if you're calling Destructoid biased against the Xbox360. Jesus Fucking Christ, man, did you completely miss Mr. Destructoid as a playable character in Bomberman Live, an Xbox360 exclusive where 99% of the fun is in playing other people over Xbox Live Gold? If Destructoid honestly hated the fuck out of Microsoft, would that have happened?

I'm not a big fan of having to pay for an online service. However I'm happier with Xbox Live than I am with EAs crap. They talk about providing their own online service and then they shut down the servers when they want you to buy the next game. WTF is that? When I'd heard that they shut down the Burnout Revenge online server I was somewhat miffed. At least with Xbox Live if I have an old game, I can play it online as long as the service continues.

Even if I ignored the multiple grammar and punctuation errors, you’re still flat-out wrong. People have been bashing Sony since they first announced the PS3...why? Because of PRICE, genius. And so what if it’s a money issue? The whole RRoD thing is ridiculous; everyone knows that. When a company has to spend $1.5 billion to make sure that all the broken 360s are fixed, there’s a problem.

And while brainderailment isn’t entirely right (pretty much anything that’s not a demo or a movie trailer costs money to download from the PSN), would you expect any less? In fact, as others have mentioned, the only real advantage that Xbox Live Gold offers over Silver is the ability to play online — and that costs $50 a year? If Sony and Nintendo can charge zero dollars to play, Microsoft can do it too; they just don’t have any reason to because they’re making millions of dollars off of Live.

Tycho put it pretty well
"It's precisely because they cut out the heart of the experience and made it a premium service that they are experiencing these challenges."

You know what format is starting to look more and more appealling again? PC. With games like Gears, Lost planet and such getting ported over with better looks and smoother framerates (Obviously depending on your setup), free online for most(non-microsoft)games, a larger and easily expandable storage capability, Gamepad and Mouse & Keyboard functionality, free messaging, teamspeak/vent with high quality audio and I've run out of things I can think of.

The reason I turned away from PC gaming was the cost of keeping it up to date, the fact you could just pop a game in a console and play without bugs or need for patches and exclusive titles.

I know everyone's had the "Are consoles too much like PCs" discusssion before but really the margin is getting smaller and smaller. Plus playing a lot of games on 360 is like playing them on my 9800pro on full se..e.ett.ttings.

But really, I'm going way off topic. Back on track, if they could offer some other incentives for Gold members other than online that would be a lot more sensible. Honestly though, I think online play should be free. Maybe it should be like a guest account for Silvers. They can play online but cannot use voice communication or some other restrictions. But just playing online I don't think should be a pay to play service.

I am a silver member. I never really saw any real content for the games I owned that was actually free anyway.

I just don't feel enough justification for XBL.. Sure I can play Online, but there's only one or two games that will forever be on XBL.. The rest are temporary at best - unless one enjoys playing the same people over and over.. I tested my month when I first got the XBL with games like Burnout Revenge and I simply played the same people over and over. Some days, no one else was playing it at all.

On top of that, you pay - and you still get ads.. Doesn't sound like great things. Perhaps if they offered the occasional "You get 100 free Microsoft Points for completing X Achievement!".. Even if it's just once a game, that would give me a great incentive to purchase XBL.. But right now, it's just paying to play games online that I have no interest in playing online *H3 & GoW*.. Now they add this new gimmick in, and I don't see any content for games that I own.

So that's that. That's my reason, I use XBL now and again to look at the Marketplace and I don't feel i'm missing much at all.

What this tells me is that MS isn't planning on moving to a free or discounted XBL Gold Account anytime soon.
