Is the time of crappy plastic peripheral games truly waning? Tony Hawk: Ride may have felt it could keep things going by giving us a little fake skateboard, but it would appear that the market is sick of all the toys and gimmicks that have saturated the gaming market, with the boarding game forecast to sell just 13,000 copies on the Xbox 360.
These are the NPD predictions ahead of next week's sales figures, and the outlook is grim for Hawk's game, which we deemed to be quite rubbish ourselves. Hawk may not like the recent reviews his game has received, but it seems that he'll dislike the public's reaction even more.
Evil publisher Activision has been jumping the shark lately with its convoluted peripheral games and it seems that people have had their fill of gimmicky, squeaky, expensive toys. DJ Hero did not perform to expectations, and Ride is scheduled to follow suit. Really though, what could Activision expect? Surely people have run out of room in their houses for all this sh*t?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Keep dreamin' bwoy. It's what gives us people hope.
It's the only way they will ever get my money (short of the original combo eventually ending up in a $20 bargin bin).
Activision bit off more thanthey could chew with all this plastic crap from this year.
As long as they can push billions of CoD titles they can afford to do whatever the hell they want.
At the very least make an alternative DLC controller download for free and sell the game for 20 or 30 bucks. I would be at least willing to check it out but I doubt they thought of that and it wouldn't be possible now.
I must be the only one in the universe
Being over priced and not responsive does not justify a purchase, they need to know they fucked up with this one.
while I hear that Ride absolutely isn't...
I know, it's more wishful thinking on my part more than anything. But like I said, I just hope more than anything right now that Activision turns this shit around, because remember, EA was in this same position not too long ago and now they churn out some really great games and original IPs, and that benefits all gamers. A new GH, CoD, and Tony Hawk every year isn't benefiting anybody but the mass of stupid people who buy the same shit every single year. Now, I'm not saying MW2 is a piece of shit, but god dammit, I want to see something new from IW. And I'm not the only one.
Every time a Activision-published game like GH or CoD sells worse than the year before, is a step forward for us as gamers. Shit like Singularity is a sign that maybe, just maybe, Activision is beginning to realize that new IPs can make money just like one of their milked-to-the-bone franchises can. And new IP = Win for us as gamers.
To summarize, I hope Activision begins to lose enough momentum to get the ball rolling again. Singularity looks great, and hopefully Activision will take more chances on new IP like this. The only way this happens is if stuff like Tony Hawk here begin to sell like shit.
Call me old fashioned, but give me a controller anyday.
Yeah. Really I think half of this stems from who we the community decide to villify. It's a cycle. We love 'em, then we hate 'em, then we love 'em again.
Everyone goes through it. EA, Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Mickey D's, Sony, it's a pattern and really none of them have gotten "better." Oh the power of rebranding.
my dj hero renegade edition was a good purchase tho. it makes a lovely side table for the price of an actual side table. i've never gotten this much use out of a game peripheral before. i'll buy another one as soon as the price drop
Why would anyone want to fake ride a skateboard? With a controller, sure, but fake riding an actual board?
If they managed to find both the desire and dedication to learning in the game on a fake board how to do flips and kickbacks, odds are they are already a skater who can actually go outside and ride their real skateboard off real ramps.
Music games...I don't play them but I can understand it. Playing the game instruments and real instruments aren't anywhere the same and a different experience. Makes sense if music is your thing why you'd like those games.
But the skateboard? Here, spend sixty bucks on a skateboard without any wheels?
Between that and selling night vision goggles to a bunch of overweight sweaty suburban boys (if the midnight launch I was at is any indication, that's 99% of who's playing) as part pf a "deluxe package" (of which you basically just put the full price of those goggles attached to the game, what a deal)...Activision lost it's mind this year and was due for a fall.
Probably wouldn't have sold worse (than either).
