Tony Hawk Ride can't sell for sh*t on the Xbox 360? photo

Is the time of crappy plastic peripheral games truly waning? Tony Hawk: Ride may have felt it could keep things going by giving us a little fake skateboard, but it would appear that the market is sick of all the toys and gimmicks that have saturated the gaming market, with the boarding game forecast to sell just 13,000 copies on the Xbox 360.

These are the NPD predictions ahead of next week's sales figures, and the outlook is grim for Hawk's game, which we deemed to be quite rubbish ourselves. Hawk may not like the recent reviews his game has received, but it seems that he'll dislike the public's reaction even more.

Evil publisher Activision has been jumping the shark lately with its convoluted peripheral games and it seems that people have had their fill of gimmicky, squeaky, expensive toys. DJ Hero did not perform to expectations, and Ride is scheduled to follow suit. Really though, what could Activision expect? Surely people have run out of room in their houses for all this sh*t?

This is amazing news. Hopefully now Activision now will stop being money-hungry assholes. It probably won't happen, but I can dream, right?

I would hope that it's not selling on any system. The price tag is ridiculous, and the concept just screams gimmick.

I think people just looked at their wall of plastic drum sets, guitars, and DJ epuipment and realized they didn't have any space for this nonsense.

If they had half a brain, they would be working on a patch to let the game use a standard controller and quickly release a $30 version sans the overpriced board perph.

It's the only way they will ever get my money (short of the original combo eventually ending up in a $20 bargin bin).

What did they expect? It's a new gaming dynamic on a title that's been fading from it's former glory for over 4 years now. It's an extra piece of hardware that just isn't a practical price point in this economy.

Activision bit off more thanthey could chew with all this plastic crap from this year.

It's possible that Ride's poor sales could be blamed on an oversaturation of gimmicky plastic peripherals but it's more likely because it is a piece of shit. It seems like people don't mind shelling out a bit extra for these sorts of things as long as they work.

I can understand this over the other games like DJ Hero, while I have yet to play it myself, I have heard nothing but praise toward it. Meanwhile Ride has gotten everything but praise, so it probably deserves the crap sales.

If the game was actually good i would of bought it. I have a normal size house a 1 floor building and i have room for more shit. Just as long as its good.

They would have sold 100 times that if they would have called it "Tony Hawk Hero" instead of "Ride".

As long as they can push billions of CoD titles they can afford to do whatever the hell they want.

I don't know that it's only the extra peripheral that's the problem, it's having to pay for extra plastic. DJ Hero, and TH Ride both ringing in at a new game x2. I'd take borderlands+modern warfare 2 over ONLY TH Ride or ONLY DJ hero any day.

Simple. They should have released this on the Wii, for the Balance Board. Developing kit where it's not needed is just stupid.

i dont know how these people "expect" something ,that they have nothing else to compare the sales to, to do well. hmm this other plastic toy game sold well so lets make up some numbers and see what happens.

i thought the project 8 game was awesome. that was the last tony hawk joint i played. i personally would not spend $120 for something that anyone who comes into my house is going to attempt to stand on. other then a rug or something like that. i'm waiting to hear the stories of the board snapping in two, or how it scratched up someones beautiful wood or ceramic tiled floor. next up ACE COMBAT "FLY"- it comes with a canopy you can put over a chair so you can feel like your inside a vinyl crop duster. watch!!

Hawk could save some face if they just recalled this product, said yeah ~ we know it was a let down and sucks. Get back to making a good skateboarding game with the original Tony Hawk 2 controls. Just make a solid game that plays well with a regular controller.

At the very least make an alternative DLC controller download for free and sell the game for 20 or 30 bucks. I would be at least willing to check it out but I doubt they thought of that and it wouldn't be possible now.

I predict they'll scrap the whole thing, gut the boards and bundle the empty shells (for free) with whatever Project Natal game they'll inevitably come out with.

I hope it continues to fail just so they don't continue the stupid idea that people will buy anything (some will)

Being over priced and not responsive does not justify a purchase, they need to know they fucked up with this one.

Its definitely a combination of general recession and a very poor product. Most people have alot less money then last year so they are looking for quality products. People were willing to spend the cash on lets say guitar hero cause it was enjoyable and done the job it was supposed to. I feel really sorry for anyone who has just spent over a hundred dollars on something that basically does not work

I know, it's more wishful thinking on my part more than anything. But like I said, I just hope more than anything right now that Activision turns this shit around, because remember, EA was in this same position not too long ago and now they churn out some really great games and original IPs, and that benefits all gamers. A new GH, CoD, and Tony Hawk every year isn't benefiting anybody but the mass of stupid people who buy the same shit every single year. Now, I'm not saying MW2 is a piece of shit, but god dammit, I want to see something new from IW. And I'm not the only one.

Every time a Activision-published game like GH or CoD sells worse than the year before, is a step forward for us as gamers. Shit like Singularity is a sign that maybe, just maybe, Activision is beginning to realize that new IPs can make money just like one of their milked-to-the-bone franchises can. And new IP = Win for us as gamers.

To summarize, I hope Activision begins to lose enough momentum to get the ball rolling again. Singularity looks great, and hopefully Activision will take more chances on new IP like this. The only way this happens is if stuff like Tony Hawk here begin to sell like shit.

Recent history shows us that these types of peripherals get little to no support. This peripheral is one-dimensional and is for a smaller niche market. How many others regret buying a Wii balance board? I know I do.

Looks wank, sounds wank, everyone I've read says it's wank, costs a lot of money, published by activision, can't imagine ever using the controller for another game, standing up to play video games sucks ass, so, uh, yeah, not buying.

Call me old fashioned, but give me a controller anyday.

Yeah. Really I think half of this stems from who we the community decide to villify. It's a cycle. We love 'em, then we hate 'em, then we love 'em again.

Everyone goes through it. EA, Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Mickey D's, Sony, it's a pattern and really none of them have gotten "better." Oh the power of rebranding.

well, you can buy a real skate deck and all for less than the game.
my dj hero renegade edition was a good purchase tho. it makes a lovely side table for the price of an actual side table. i've never gotten this much use out of a game peripheral before. i'll buy another one as soon as the price drop

The key is simple, if you're expecting the public to fork over relatively large sums of money for a yet another piece of plastic, make sure the thing bloody works. I actually was looking forward to Ride and wouldn't have minded having another peripheral sitting here so long as it had lived up to its potential.

HEL105: They're probably (*hopefully*) quoting estimates on 360 because it outsold the other versions. Still seems like 13,000 copies more than it should have sold.

Unlike Nintendo, people on the PC/Xbox360/PS3 are kind of buried in all the plastic controllers right now (as Nintendo fans should be used to this after it happening on many of their consoles by now) plus it really couldn't have come out at the worst time for them. Didn't the other developers/publishers pushing stuff to 2010 give enough of a hint that some games out in late 2009 will just be overlooked for the bigger name releases? At least they could have put out a few rereleased classic games with this to justify the price of TH Ride.

Even if they had the room or money for more added on equipment, this was the most retarded idea ever.
Why would anyone want to fake ride a skateboard? With a controller, sure, but fake riding an actual board?
If they managed to find both the desire and dedication to learning in the game on a fake board how to do flips and kickbacks, odds are they are already a skater who can actually go outside and ride their real skateboard off real ramps.

Music games...I don't play them but I can understand it. Playing the game instruments and real instruments aren't anywhere the same and a different experience. Makes sense if music is your thing why you'd like those games.

But the skateboard? Here, spend sixty bucks on a skateboard without any wheels?
Between that and selling night vision goggles to a bunch of overweight sweaty suburban boys (if the midnight launch I was at is any indication, that's 99% of who's playing) as part pf a "deluxe package" (of which you basically just put the full price of those goggles attached to the game, what a deal)...Activision lost it's mind this year and was due for a fall.

Probably wouldn't have sold worse (than either).

Just like to remind Activision that while they were working on established, money making titles to sell a cool 13,000 copies, according to vgcharts Ghostbusters sold over a million total and Brutal Legend sold 650k.
