Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 now available for iPhone/Touch photo

Remember when the Tony Hawk games were good? Like, you know, really really good? Now you can re-live those glory days on your iPhone or iPod touch -- Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 is now available on the App Store for download.

Activision hooked me up with a copy to check out, and I spent about an hour playing it on my iPhone 3GS last night. The game runs smooth, and looks nearly identical to the original (or at least what I remember of it). Everything appears to be intact, from the level challenges to the legendary skaters waiting to be upgraded and customized to your playing style.

The experiencing isn't perfect, though. While I'm digging the fact that I can play it on the go, the game's touch-screen controls leave a bit to be desired. This has less to do with the software and more to do with the hardware; Pro Skater requires fast, precise d-pad and button presses, and that's just not something you're going to get on the iPhone/Touch screen. Pulling off tricks wasn't an issue, but lining up my skater to hit jumps and start off combo lines was a bit (no pun intended) touchy.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 will run you $9.99, which is a little pricey by App Store standards. But given how much content is here and provided you can stick with and master slightly unwieldy controls, it just might be worth it to pick it up.

I'm getting annoyed now.
I'm finding more and more reasons to get an iPod Touch.

Developers should just play to the systems strengths instead of cramming control heavy games onto it. Fake buttons on a touch screen are not the same as buttons!

I'm looking at you, Street Fighter, Resident Evil 4 and Call of Duty.

Does this have the full soundtrack? That's what I really care about.

Yet another excellent game foiled by lame "touchscreen D-pad" controls.

There's not a whole lot that can be done about it, of course, but it's still lame.

I downloaded this yesterday and I must say it is pretty awesome. I dont usually play any of the games I get for my iPhone for very long... but I can see myself playing this one for awhile.

It isnt spot on like this review says tho.. I mean it is a near perfect port but you can deffintly see the textures pop ups on certain things like logos on the ramps and what not.

The controls are a bit extreme as well, they should tone them down. You hit left and it takes a HARD turn.

All in all a great game. One of the best I have played on the iPhone so far.

Seems like the iTouch/iPhone and Xbox Live Arcade are becoming a dumpsite for ancient games.

Is Spider-Man still in it? If not, it can go to hell.

would love to except for the controls. I've pretty much resigned myself to only buy games that are complimentary to touch controls for iPhone.

I just can't stand trying to play Doom, or Megaman 2, or whatever with those virtual joysticks. to me, there's just no getting used to them, they always suck.
