Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Jim is not the only person allowed to post videos of British sketch comedy.

Unless he's posted this one before. In which case, I feel like a dick.

Tonight, Jim, Topher, Aaron and I will discuss the finer points of rpg combat systems, conveying romance, and pirating really good indie games.

As always, we rely on your listener questions and Der Sïëgëlpüntz™ to satisfy us. Kindly hit the jump and provide both.

Do you guys ever feel that a lesser known game (such as Rygar on the PS2) that had a real good (imo) combat system gets shafted by a bigger title like God of War. So my question is this; What games came out that where truly innovative (sorry aaron) but ended up getting no credit for what it did and some other bigger title got all the praise?
And I most give Aaron a "cheers" for his Real Men Play Gradius article, it rocked.

I'm with Anonymous Noob here, why are people being so harsh to Mirror's Edge's 'trial and error' game play when almost every adventure game has the exact same thing. And all of the nostalgia fanboys jizzed themselves over Mega Man, which is trial and error taken to the extreme, and Mirror's Edge gets a fail for it?

I personally really enjoyed Mirror's Edge but I would like to her your guy's thoughts on it.

I always buy new copies of games because I'm pretentious in that..

I'm of the opinion that buying a used copy of a game is no better than pirating or not-emulating that game since the people responsible for the experience you're enjoying gain nothing from the sale of a used copy of their game.

Used game retailers reduce the demand for new games which can lead companies to raise prices in order to make up for this lost revenue and certainly contribute to ridiculous DRM, in my opinion.

What'd you guys think, do I got a point or am I just an asshat?

On the subject of RPG combat, it seems lately a lot of people have been taking an "evolve or die" stance on their systems. It seems more and more, there are quick time events, mini games, or some other element in the combat system to make the battle more "engaging." While the success of these new systems are hit or miss, I feel there is something to be said about series who stay true to their combat systems and still manage to make them interesting. An examples being Shadow Hearts' Judgement Ring. Most of the "real time" systems I have encountered often raise the excitement of the battle, but making me feel like I am fighting to get my characters to do what I want them to. So I guess my question is this: What do you prefer in a RPG battle system, and how does "real time" systems make you feel while playing?

As for portraying romance in a video game, I say no one did a finer job than Suda 51 with his masterfully written story of Travis Touchdown and his efforts to woo Sylvia Christel in the classic romance epic No More Heroes.

Also... something about Boner Quest.

Question for Jim

When you come to the Americas can you bring a big ole box of Stornoway Black Pudding?
I wouldn't mind giving it a try. Its got to be good if the House of Commons thinks so.

How many hearts do you need to have to get the Master Boner in the graveyard ?

Is Destructoid looking for new game reviewers any time soon ?

How do would you rate Fable 2's replay value ? I bought the game at its launch, finished it rather quickly and I think Im prett much done with that game...

Is there any hope that Media Molecule can be made to put a disclaimer on LBP boxart warning that; "If you do not enjoy platformers you should NOT buy this game!"

perhaps a bit late... but oh well.

(My unused Shallit-Pun from Mike Hawk's call for them for the Bonerquest boxart)

You’re not ‘straight-trippin;’ you’ll be ‘straight-fuckin!’once you get your hands firmly on Destructoid’s “Boner Quest™.” It’s fuck-tastic!

On RPG combat systems:

With the newly revealed information regarding the "Blood of Bahamut" DS game, do you think it's enough to add a classic turn based RPG system to giant slaying-Shadow of the Collusus-style battles? Will this one just fade away to DS mediocrity?

Regards,

Dimly

i've always wondered, what if they took the new "action battle" system they implemented in FF12 (i hate romans) and applied them to pokemon. Where it would be an open world where you could search the underbrush and engage any battle at will. While being able to change tactic on as much of the fly is allowed.

Well assuming you're reffering to turn based rpg's i think the only combat systems that keep me interested are one of two things both perfected on the SNES. Either a Chrono Trigger active combat system where you baisicly fight in real time, or an Earthbound/Mother scrolling combat system that people are just realizing is awesome now that mother 3 came out.

Speaking of comeing out, i believe either of these combat systems would be key for Boner Quest. A scrolling combat system would be able to more accurately depict your "Stamina" while active combat would allow a more realistic experience. (sorry for the double post by the way)

Also, If you had to choose a favorite combat system for action RPG's, what would it be? Personally my two favorites are Diable II and Secret of Evermore (old secret of mana sequel), and would a click to attack gameplay such as Diablo II be conducive to Boner Quest Play?

Final question, do you agree with me that romance plots tend to turn out utterly retarded in games? Prime recent example being GoW2 as discussed last week yet I'm not sure i can remember a single game where any type of romance sub plot really got to me emotionaly, the only game that came close was Final Fantasy 7 When Aeris died (and i purposely spoiled that after what you guys said last week, if that was a spoiled for you then too bad) and lastly, would Boner Quest be fitting for romance plots, or would the main charecter "bone and run" so to speak?
