After what seems like decades, it's another single-topic episode of Podtoid! This time, we're looking at the Resident Evil series as a whole, along with special guest Nick Chester. We'll also have Samit Sarkar on for the first quarter of the show to discuss Flower with.

We'll be discussing the series' transition from Silent Hill-esque survival horror to the one-man-army stylings of RE4 and 5, the storylines (or lack of them), and Nick's played RE5 so he'll talk about that or something.

We need listener questions, as always, so ask those in the comments below. If you ask the best one you get a Dtoid swag bag. So, there's that.

Resident Evil 5 obviously takes many things from Resident Evil 4 (to some previewers' dismay). What would you like to see Resident Evil 6 do to separate it from the pack and not be seen as a simple "RE4 rehash?"

Also, what would you like to see be done with the franchise on Wii?

What sort of narrative devices are unique to the video game medium? I speak of things like Bioshock's audio logs from characters of Rapture's universe, Lost Odyssey's "A Thousand Years of Dreams", or Aaron Linde's BonerQuest's innovative use of the Boner-Haiku system.

In regard to the topic, are there any instances in RE or Silent Hill where plot is developed in a non-conventional way? Do you think things like Ada's notes to Leon in RE4 are interesting or just fluff? Would the survival-horror genre be improved by a greater focus on narrative?

Should we still be calling Resident Evil survivor horror? It makes more sense with the earlier games, but with the last two iterations theres more of a focus on action and combat instead of horror and survival. There might be a little scare here and there but overall its not really all that scary of a game. If you agree with this, what genre would you instead define them under? Is it its own thing, or is just third person shooter with horror elements?

Did you guys ever try to piece together the continuity between games (ie. all the diary entries, etc)? I read the diaries, but trying to make sense of the timeline just gave me a headache and took away from smoking zombies. Did the fractured continuity have any effect on your impressions of the series?

"Dead Space," "Resident Evil 4," "Silent Hill: Homecoming," "Boner Quest: The Moist Nightmare," and "Alone in the Dark," are all recent games that have failed to generate even a little fear in me.

What do games today have to do in order to become genuinely frightening again?

I remember being terrified in Code Veronica until I got to a safe room in which case my tension completely lapsed.

Is there a way for the player to save their progress without resetting their tension levels? Or is a rest point important in order to keep the game being scary without being frustrating?

The goal of most survival-horror games, as I see them, is to create an environment that, while passable, still makes you think you're somewhat helpless. This is, more or less, conveyed through the controls of games like RE and Silent Hill, which tend to be very limited. If you could take an element OUT of a game to make it a bit more terrifying, what would it be? OR, would there be any element you'd like to see implemented better to add terror to a game?

I am a huge fan of the series, so I can't wait to hear your thoughts on this topic! As far as my question, what do you think of the over-the-shoulder camera angle? While we can agree that RE4 was praised for the over the shoulder camera when it came out, I believe that changing the camera from being static was what really ended the survival horror feel of the previous games.

Sure, you cant see whats behind you, and that adds to some suspense, but I always loved how early RE games were able to add nail-biting suspense by not allowing you to see what was around a corner, or see what was in a room until you walked forward.

If you all were Zombies/Tyrants in RE, what kind of undead monster would you be? List examples of abilities and special talents.

Also, do you all subscribe to the Jim's idea that survival horror has evolved itself into the point of extinction?

Resident Evil 5 producer Masachika Kawata has stated “Personally I would like to create something on Wii in the Resident Evil family. At the moment we don’t know and have just been working on RE5". Is this likely to mean another spin off such as Umbrella Chronicles or something in the main series? And when can we resonably expect a subsequent R.E. release?

What are your thoughts on the whole zombies/las plagas divide? Has the series moved on from the shambling corpses of days past? Do you even bother making the distinction between the two?

People seem to like the newer control scheme (or at least those who played RE4 do/did). Do you think older Iterations would benefit from it, if the game was balanced for it, for example, ammo availability was slim/none (with slim out for tea) to create that nervous tension and feeling of helplessness.

Also, did you ever run out of typewriter coils?

With Resident Evil 6 would you like to see the Resident Evil series stick with it's more action horror slant that it adopted in recent games, return to it's B-movie survival horror roots or adopt a new style such as the more viseral Event Horrizon style horror found in Dead Space or psychological horror of Project Zero and Siren: Blood Curse?

Do you think RE should stick with the third person perspective which has worked really well to heighten the tension from being surrounded by zombies? Perhaps, Capcom should try to do something like L4D and do the next RE from a first person perspective, just to mix it up.

Is there any certain Resident Evil character that you prefer playing over the others?

I had much more fun playing Leon than anyone else, and not because Resident Evil 4 was incredible, but because he had this mantra of 'normalcy', where Chris or Jill both remind me of super soldiers.

After being chased through a foggy forest, fleeing for your lives from what can only be described as rotting dobermans, you manage to take refuge in a seemingly abandoned house. Upon entering, you notice the lights are on and that you are in a rather grandiose entryway. What is the first thing you say to your companions upon catching your breath?

A) "Wow! What a mansion!"
B) "Holyshitwhatthefuckwasthat?!"
C) Say nothing and take a head count and make sure everyone is accounted for.
D) "Why can't we be characters in BonerQuest instead?"

Also, how do you feel about the 2-player nature of Resident Evil 5? I played the demo at a friends house and was shocked to see my AI partner attempt to knife fight a chainsaw wielding sack head when she ran out of ammo. Do you think this will be fixed for release?

Do you think that big horror series have lost their fear factor with time and that now developpers think fear=tension about action or they just think that horror games don't scare anymore ?
Also do you think it is better to play a RE or Silent Hill alone or with buddies ?
Finally, what were your favorite RE moments ?

I played the RE-5 demo at my bros place this weekend. And it got me thinking; I like we have the choice to play online. But some how I still fell playing side by side is still the best way to play tougher. To bad it cuts your screen in half. Thoughts?

My friend and I played the offline co-op for RE 5, and we had a blast. I didn't have a single problem or complaint with the split screen mode. I actually enjoyed it.

My question is simple:
Am I crazy for liking something no one else does?

Please rate all the RE Females on a scale of "almost a Jill Sandwich" to "Bonerquesting".

Another question: The RE5 demo is pretty much set entirely during the day. Do you think it's a sign that the developers are trying to make gamers scared of the light(as in change up the settings some) or do you think that the setting will revert back to night and darkness and they will use old scare tactics on the player?

Why do most demos suck? It seems as though most of the demos I play do not entice me to buy the final product. A few weeks ago, on Podtoid they were saying how little they liked the F.E.A.R. 2 demo and then Jim ends up liking it. It seems as though the companies don't put the best foot forward and give a piece of the game without much context. The RE5 demo did this to me as well, I really didn't want to play it because I felt that I had no clue what was going on and that I was just plopped in there to kill zombies without much motivation.

This is sorta related.

Does the attempt at creating a canon or have continuity in between games just make them more ridiculous or incomplete?

It seems like some franchises like Ninja Gaiden are just taken down a peg when put together with Death or Alive. The single great experience of a Resident Evil game is usually doesn't seem that great when you realize the amount of loose threads the storyline has.

Other franchises just try waaaay to hard to create a story where there isn't one (Sonic)

Should some franchises just ditch an overarching storyline and just keep the name like Final Fantasy does or should they continue with their poor narrative and character development?

Is Resident Evi still scary? Ever since the franchises reboot with RE4 the games have started to move from horror to thriller. Are the days of scary Resident Evil games over? Was the franchise even scary to begin with, or has it always been more like Aliens then Alien? (meaning has it always been more about intense action then scares)

If you could make a Resident Evil spin-off game in another genre, what would that be?

One example is Resident Evil Wars, the zombies could be uint spammers (Zerg/Tyrranids), Umbrella the mysterious stealth faction (Nod) and "the main character faction (I'm not the biggest RE fan) could be the heavy hitters with few units (Space Marines/GDI).

Is William Birkin one of the most underrated RE Villains out there?
Nemesis is cool and everything (albeit a tad 'Xtreme'), but the tale of Birkin's infection and progressive mutation as his humanity slips away is a very memorable and tragic one.
By then end of the game you feel as if you're putting him out of his misery.

Your thoughts?

After just purchasing Sonics Ultimate Genesis Collection (its awesome and totally worth $30) and playing the games on that collection, I noticed something. I totally got my ass handed to me even on "easy" difficulty on some of the games.
Have we as gamers got so accustomed to games being dumbed down to the point that "hard is the new normal" that almost all skill is taken out of a game and the only thing stopping us from beating a game is just time?
While I know that "retro" games are more difficult just by design and mechanics, but has the catering to the so-called "casual gamer" have actually taken top priority into devs/pubs ways of making games that it almost disregards the fundamental challenge of a game and makes it too accessible. I mean how would it feel if everyone that plays Monopoly starts with a absurd amount of cash and "get out of jail cards" to start and the risk of "losing" is diminished to the point of not being fun anymore?

I've been hearing rumors that Capcom would be adding the option in RE 5 to be able to run while shooting. I think that's fucking stupid.

This is unrelated to the topic of the podcast but I have a question: What are your thoughts on Namco-Bandai using the sales of Retro Game Challenge to judge whether or not to bring over Fragile and other Namco-Bandai related titles that have to this date only graced the shelves in Japan? Is this like measuring the sales of Halo 3 to decide whether or not to bring over Shadow of the Colossus or are Namco-Bandai just being a bunch of stuck up pricks?
