After what seems like decades, it's another single-topic episode of Podtoid! This time, we're looking at the Resident Evil series as a whole, along with special guest Nick Chester. We'll also have Samit Sarkar on for the first quarter of the show to discuss Flower with.
We'll be discussing the series' transition from Silent Hill-esque survival horror to the one-man-army stylings of RE4 and 5, the storylines (or lack of them), and Nick's played RE5 so he'll talk about that or something.
We need listener questions, as always, so ask those in the comments below. If you ask the best one you get a Dtoid swag bag. So, there's that.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Also, what would you like to see be done with the franchise on Wii?
In regard to the topic, are there any instances in RE or Silent Hill where plot is developed in a non-conventional way? Do you think things like Ada's notes to Leon in RE4 are interesting or just fluff? Would the survival-horror genre be improved by a greater focus on narrative?
What do games today have to do in order to become genuinely frightening again?
Is there a way for the player to save their progress without resetting their tension levels? Or is a rest point important in order to keep the game being scary without being frustrating?
Also would you like it if the Resident Evil series went back to its Silent Hill gameplay, or do you think that it cant go back? or cant come back in a successful way
I am a huge fan of the series, so I can't wait to hear your thoughts on this topic! As far as my question, what do you think of the over-the-shoulder camera angle? While we can agree that RE4 was praised for the over the shoulder camera when it came out, I believe that changing the camera from being static was what really ended the survival horror feel of the previous games.
Sure, you cant see whats behind you, and that adds to some suspense, but I always loved how early RE games were able to add nail-biting suspense by not allowing you to see what was around a corner, or see what was in a room until you walked forward.
Also, do you all subscribe to the Jim's idea that survival horror has evolved itself into the point of extinction?
Did anyone else shit their pants when that dog came flying through the window?
Is it really rape if you get to choose?
We've had gritty urban alleyways, eastern-european villages and african shanty towns. Where should our heroes go next?
Perhaps the moon?
Or maybe the centre of the earth...
What are your thoughts on the whole zombies/las plagas divide? Has the series moved on from the shambling corpses of days past? Do you even bother making the distinction between the two?
Also, did you ever run out of typewriter coils?
I had much more fun playing Leon than anyone else, and not because Resident Evil 4 was incredible, but because he had this mantra of 'normalcy', where Chris or Jill both remind me of super soldiers.
Preempting your response. Why are you crap too?
A) "Wow! What a mansion!"
B) "Holyshitwhatthefuckwasthat?!"
C) Say nothing and take a head count and make sure everyone is accounted for.
D) "Why can't we be characters in BonerQuest instead?"
Also, how do you feel about the 2-player nature of Resident Evil 5? I played the demo at a friends house and was shocked to see my AI partner attempt to knife fight a chainsaw wielding sack head when she ran out of ammo. Do you think this will be fixed for release?
Also do you think it is better to play a RE or Silent Hill alone or with buddies ?
Finally, what were your favorite RE moments ?
(If my questions don't have a right structure, it is because I'm a lazy French)
My question is simple:
Am I crazy for liking something no one else does?
Another question: The RE5 demo is pretty much set entirely during the day. Do you think it's a sign that the developers are trying to make gamers scared of the light(as in change up the settings some) or do you think that the setting will revert back to night and darkness and they will use old scare tactics on the player?
Does the attempt at creating a canon or have continuity in between games just make them more ridiculous or incomplete?
It seems like some franchises like Ninja Gaiden are just taken down a peg when put together with Death or Alive. The single great experience of a Resident Evil game is usually doesn't seem that great when you realize the amount of loose threads the storyline has.
Other franchises just try waaaay to hard to create a story where there isn't one (Sonic)
Should some franchises just ditch an overarching storyline and just keep the name like Final Fantasy does or should they continue with their poor narrative and character development?
One example is Resident Evil Wars, the zombies could be uint spammers (Zerg/Tyrranids), Umbrella the mysterious stealth faction (Nod) and "the main character faction (I'm not the biggest RE fan) could be the heavy hitters with few units (Space Marines/GDI).
Nemesis is cool and everything (albeit a tad 'Xtreme'), but the tale of Birkin's infection and progressive mutation as his humanity slips away is a very memorable and tragic one.
By then end of the game you feel as if you're putting him out of his misery.
Your thoughts?
Have we as gamers got so accustomed to games being dumbed down to the point that "hard is the new normal" that almost all skill is taken out of a game and the only thing stopping us from beating a game is just time?
While I know that "retro" games are more difficult just by design and mechanics, but has the catering to the so-called "casual gamer" have actually taken top priority into devs/pubs ways of making games that it almost disregards the fundamental challenge of a game and makes it too accessible. I mean how would it feel if everyone that plays Monopoly starts with a absurd amount of cash and "get out of jail cards" to start and the risk of "losing" is diminished to the point of not being fun anymore?
Does the merchant from RE4 return in RE5 or is there a new one who is just as humourous?
Do you guys think that Capcom is going to sell-out and employ a "run and gun" mechanic to Resident Evil 5, as opposed to having to stand still while shooting?
