Comparing Terry Tate to the Cole Train is like comparing an orgasm to a handshake.
On tonight's podtoid, Topher, Aaron, Jim and I will be talking about the Qu'ran (always a knee-slapping topic), Mother 3, and whether players are smarter than publishers.
As always, we need questions and Siegelpuns™*, so feel free to hit the jump and throw a few of each out. If you ask the best question, we'll send you some swag.
*Or Shalitpuns, if you like

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
You can thank the HEAVENS for Saints Row 2!
Also, LOL. And you do know that "Terry Tate" actually IS Cole Train, right?
When game developers copy each other Saints Row to Grand Theft Auto we are fine with it but if you plagiarize in school it's a fail why is that?
I have been playing some Saints Row 2 and it got me thinking. It is as fun as hell but really in no way a "good game" its graphics aren't very good its cheesy and it has a lot of bugs. Yet a lot of people are convinced its what GTA IV should have been. We will one day come to a point where all the games are really fun and nothing else no good story or anything?
The Fable 2 co-op patch got me thinking. Why is it fair game makers get to do that now the release a game that technically is not up to par and just fix it with a patch. That's not really fair back in the retro games no developer could ever do that why do that get to get away with it now?
World of Warcraft's upcoming expansion is sure to WOW you!
What do you say to people who argue against "piracy" of video games when cases like Mother 3 exist? There is literally no way a non-Japanese speaking gamer could get it and enjoy it in it's retail form.
Is it so bad if a game is not very polished, but much more fun than the other? GTA IV may be the more impressive of the two, but SR2 is a much more fun game, and to me, that makes it a better game. Also, I really find it hard to believe that SR2 is a case of plagiarism. Sure, the core fundamentals are the same, but they are such different types of games that saying it's plagiarized just sounds wrong.
The new translation of Mother 3 will leave you MIRTH-BOUND.
But seriously, why does the Qur'an have such awesome chants appearantly (the same thing happened in Zelda:OOT)
How bad did Jim feel when he work up after Singsterling, which was amazing I love you Jim.
Finally, HINAWA!!! *CRIES*
My question is what is the appeal to getting early copies of these games when some or most content is going to be inaccessible until launch (ie Gears 2) and having a steeper price (LBP)?
First off, the whole qu'ran pulling is ridiculous, there are games that have plots based entirely around themes and stories found in the bible, the fact that one out of god knows how many background tracks has 2 lines that reference a passage from the qu'ran can set back any type of media is terrible, but its bound to happen now and again.
Second, SNES being my favorite console of all time, and being a member and huge fan of the starmen.net i must say I've been excited for the release of the patch since the project was started. Mother 1&2 being probably my favorite turn based RPG's of all time, its hard for me to say this but i think Mother 3 is just as good if not better than the other two. I already beat it twice, go download it.
Lastly on a side topic, there's been allot of talk recently about episodic content, mostly in my case over the Star Craft 2 announced as a three part installment, basically episodic campaign. Also over Valve announcing that Half Life 2:episode 3 wont be out until late next year. To put it into perspective, if you were making Boner Quest, would you want to make it an episodic series? For example we've already got a few good names planned out; Boner Quest 2:Erectile Fandango, Boner Quest 3:The Reckoning, maybe make the first Boner Quest:The Awakening ?
Anyways love the show, looking forward to it tonight
Dan
I have a game-design fetish and I want your opinions!
How would you say Saints Row 2 compares to GTA4?
Also, question: concerning the amazing Mega Man costume cranium made for his kids, have you ever put a lot of dedication into a Halloween/cosplay outfit before? Also, what are you guys doing/dressing as for Halloween?
If you're looking for a game that's just OOZING fun, then world of goo is for you!
And along that same lines: What is it about world of goo that you guys find the most endearing: is it the incredibly well done atmosphere, the intelligent puzzles, or perhaps the charisma of the goo balls themselves? I know what it is for me: The combined horror and glee to see your 20 meter tower come crashing down because you didn't balance it in the right spot. Damn you physics engine! You hurt so good.
On one side of things, piracy is bad, and we want to reward Itoi and HAL for making such a fantastic game.
On the other side, people say we shouldn't be rewarding Nintendo with more money for this, because it will give them the impression that they don't have to bring out an official translation.
On the other other side, since it's impossible to find a new Japanese copy, importing one is only giving money to resellers, and not to the developers anyway, rendering the debate moot.
What do you guys think?
On that note, I'm playing Mother 3 for the first time, and while the fan translation has many quite hilarious lines (when I walked up to a frog and he started talking to me about memories, I thought I was going to shit) do you think some of it was just drummed up by the writers and justified by calling it "localization"?
Obviously I know you all like any other sane member of the human race will hate the idea of censorship for any reason except extreme circumstances such as kid porn. My question is actually how do you feel the media is changing in the way it sees games? I've noticed in the UK that the mainstream media (not counting comic books such as the Sun) is coming around finally and actually giving games the respect that other forms of media get.
My question: The Mother 3 fan translation has been the biggest, and most well organized "rebellion" (for lack of a better term) against a gaming corporation we've seen yet, but even it still hasn't prompted Nintendo to change there objectionable stance (stop putting the Mother series on the backburner.) It seems that no matter how hard we try, it's impossible to force companies to change or do anything. Despite the huge fallout and protests, Spore and all future EA titles will still have SecurROM, even though PK Siege and countless other Starmen.net campaigns have taken place, Nintendo still refuses even to comment on possible localization and rereleases of Mother games, and despite everyone loathing Nacmo's DRM policies, they still have and enact them, primarily because in all three examples, the comapines are still making ludicrous amounts of money. People still bought millions of copies of Spore, the Wii still sells god knows how many units per day and everyone still buys on disk costumes for Soul Calibur. The only real way to protest this would be to organize a mass boycot, but since the majority of consumers neither know, nor care about SecurROM or any of the grievances. It seems impossible to enact one. Because of this, are we gamers for ever doomed to be slaves and jingos to the demagouges and rich elites in the ivory towers of game copmaines, and is this truly that bad of a fate?
If that one is too long (or too shit): New DLC was released for Soul Calibur IV that allows a user to pay to unlock hidden weapons in the game. And while this may seem like more bland DLC whoring and unworthy of attention, I think it's an interesting vision into the future of unlockables. It's been argued that unlockables are an archaic feature of the past, sole designed to boost replay value that should be done away with, since it restricts a consumers access to content that they payed for, and you would never see a movie or a book, where content isn't available until requirements are fulfilled. As someone who enjoys unlockables, I'm against they're removal, but I know that there are many who hate them (especially in the case of SC4) and would prefer an option to unlock all this content immediately. Namco is giving this option, for a price. Do you think this is right and people should have to pay to bypass such an integral part of a game, or should the option be available for free, so that all content is immediately available to a paying consumer if they so please, or should it no exist at all?
My extraneous anecdote: In the Mother 3 fan translation, they changed the name of the Scary Womanizing Pig Mask to "Fearsome Pork Trooper." Do I have the right to be outraged by this, or is this just what I get for being impatient and using a bootleg Translation FAQ?
I guess my question would be why the FUCK are publishers cowing to the fear of maybe possibly offending some religious minority who's probably too busy bowing to the east to be playing PS3 in the first place? Goddamn. What's next, are Square of America going to start refusing to port their shitty cliche JRPGs to avoid offending American Christians?
Pun: Sony will face a world of hurt for delaying Little Big Planet!
Mother 3 is a mother that I'd like to fuck!
But only do that if Linde says it. Aaron swearing in the Siegel voice is the funniest thing that's ever occurred on Podtoid.
Also, in regards to Boner Quest, the other week you mentioned that a similar game was already being made. I forget what the name was, but was this it? Either way, you should talk about Bonetown. It looks delightfully awful. Also, boners.
Realism (not necessarily in graphical terms, but also interactive) can have both positive and negative effects on plot, gameplay and so forth. Where do you think a game should draw the line between fun and realism, and how do you think that balance is achieved?
For instance my tombstone would probably be a Street Fighter 3 or 4 machine and it would be free to play.
YOU KILL THE JOE, YOU MAKE SOME MO'
This seigelpun is only good if you liked the game, but...
I believe that Mother 3 is going to be a SMAAAAAAAASH!
We keep on hearing all this talk from all these survey and marketing groups such as NPD about how the "hardcore" gamer, while comprising a relatively small population, has enormous buying power because of the quantity of games they consistently buy. Yet it seems to me, especially looking at Nintendo, that they really don't get why they are getting criticism from that audience and would much rather go pursue the soccer mom and "casual" crowd. Reggie keeps talking about how unsatiable the hardcore is and yet had they bothered to throw out a simple translation of Mother 3, they would have undoubtedly pleased a large portion of the hardcore. So my question is, do you think that Nintendo has the right idea from a financial point of view, and that going after the hardcore is not worth it, or do you think they are wrong, and if so, why don't they see it?
Well Saints Row 2 has many more problems than just "not very polished" when i was playing a two hour play it froze twice also I think Saints Row is very similar to San Andreas but I was just using that as an easy example couldn't think of a better one
Doesn't that take some of the fun out of it?
I know it would for me.
Oh,and one more - given the sensitivities of certain muslim radicals (i.e, they chopped the head off a translator who translated a book they didn't like), don't you think the producers of LBP and Sony were right to take the game off the market? Sure, it's easy to crow and say they were cowards, butthat's easy to crow about it's not YOUR head being potentially threatened to be severed.
