Tonight's Podtoid is in a precarious position photo

Because, really, how do you top a podcast which included Raul Julia, Jean Claude Van Damme, and Kyle Minogue?

If you're Podtoid, you post this picture by Shakey1245, follow it up with a regular news episode and sort of hope nobody notices.

Tonight, the Podtoid crew will discuss BioShock 2, player-created narrative, and maybe some crap about Six Days in Fallujah or the Shadow of the Colossus movie. Maybe.

Either way, we definitely need a lot of listener questions, so feel free to hit the jump and start asking (thus netting you a chance of winning a Dtoid swag bag, to boot).

This week I only have a question for Jim.

Would you rather cover Reggie Fils-Aime with barbecue sauce or have a Dynasty Warriors game produced by Hideo Kojima?

I just wanted to say that I love that movie (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern).

I want to skip ahead to Bioshock 3: I know we don't know much about Bioshock 2 yet, but how can they possibly make a third one? (It has already been announced to come out with the movie.) They can't possibly make Rapture any worse than it looks in the little bit we've seen of two. But if there's a franchis to milk, they'll find a way. Any ideas?

What has been the most awe-inspiring cinematic moment in a videogame? I think that the MGS series really changed the standards on how the cutscenes could seem in such a movie-like fashion (besides the codec bits, obviously). Shadow of the Colossus also had some very breathtaking scenes, I would like to hear some of the podtoid cast's favorite moments like these.

In games where you play as, or fight alongside, foreign characters...
Do you prefer they:
A: Speak in their native language (with actual voice actors from that country)? e.g. Battlefield 1942
B: Speak in perfect English?
C: Have an offensively stereotypical accent? e.g. CoD: World at War

What is your view on the Fullajah controversy, I live about 20 minutes from where it is made, and the someone in the local paper called it "Profiting ofdead people", Does this also mean that Steven Spielberg hates the jews because he made a movie about the holocaust which is just like what this person is trying to say? Even though he himself is Jewish! THAT BASTARD!

Oh, okay. I didn't realise it was today. I'll just put it here with all the rest then.

So, with inclusion of the level editor in the PC release of Braid, are those of you who purchased the 360 version tempted to purchase it again based on the promise of community mods and levels? Will the community get behind Braid like they did Portal? And the other thing I said, which I can't remember. See, this is why I PMed you. In fact, can you just read that please? I fucked up.

Here is an oldie but a goodie question

How come the video game industry cannot make reasonable Female characters? I am asking cause I was writing a paper for english on it. I know the usual arguments (Sex Sells, Men develop the games etc...) but are there any other reason you guys can think of? I ask cause I groan every time I see a new female character wearing nothing but a smile nowadays. I believe its just laziness on the parts of the developers. Alyx Vance is the pinnacle of female game design, why can't others strive for equal representation?

The cast seems to have come to the (very much correct) consensus that the whole "when will games truly be art" quandary is kind of shit and asking for something now that's way premature, but do you feel that there seems to be this certain narrow minded obsession with a game that's "art." Plenty of great books and films, like Apocalypse Now (or it's source material), All The Kings Men and Ulysses while fantastic works are not really "art," but they are fantastic stories that are just as valid and good as there artistic counterparts, just in different ways. There have been plenty of videogames that are in a same boat, like Chrono Trigger, Persona 3, Beyond Good and Evil, Half Life 2, Aaron Linde's Bonerquest, Earthbound, Metal Gear Solid that while not art, have incredible stories that are as well worth hearing as the works of masters like James Joyce or Francis Ford Coppala. Do you guys have any thoughts, counter or for this school of thought or similar observations?

What trend in gaming (i.e. cover mechanics, zombie games) do you think will peter out first?

Personally, I hope it's brown and gray color schemes. I don't mind it when it's done right (Dishwasher) but I hate hate when it's done wrong (most modern shooters).

Which video game character would you like to...

1)Punch in the balls.
2)Wake up in bed with.
3)Laugh at if they had an embarrassing accident.
4)Swap clothes with.
5)Help commit suicide.

Heck share the answer out amongst yourselves for bonus fun!

Since the release of Duke Nukem 3D in 1996, gaming in general has come a long way, and Duke Nukem Forever looks like a remake of the old one with current gen graphics. Don't you think we're over the hole "one-liner action hero, mindless shooter action"?

I honestly think out of all the games to be turned into movies that Sotc has a higher chance of not being a bag of shit. Since the game's narrative is only told by the images you see, and the actions you preform, a movie wouldn't have a hard time capturing this in Film. At the same time, I think that watching our main character run around with Aggro, with little dialog, fighting large gorgeous monsters, might actually be kinda boring.

I guess the reason sotc is so good, is the experience of playing, so maybe i'm wrong.

PS Linde will only amount to BonerQuest. On his grave it will read.

RIP

At one of the GDC talks, a developer mentioned that the aspect of video games that seems to have used the least of its potential is Multiplayer. Do you guys think that the proper place to explore this potential would be in the limited environment, like most games have, or the MMO arena, despite the complexities and resources any MMO undertaking needs?

Along the lines of the SotC movie discussion/debacle, what videogame do you guys think could actually make a decent film, given the methods and practices of Hollywood today? When you look at all game movies of years past, the major studios have always felt the need to over-complicate the most simple of concepts (De-Evolution Gun...need I say more), or alter minor story details for the pure sake of infuriating the gaming community.

Maybe I'm answering my own question here, and we're just gonna hafta wait a few more generations until videogame narratives gain a little more respect, but what game could you see being made into a remotely passable film adaption?
Xhumation's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/13/2009 17:34

I think videogame movies are just quick cash-ins

There's always an audience for these movies so most directos don't try to make something meaningful or well done. they just make up something to kinda fill up to ours. The movie industry does not respect videogames as an artform.

Do you think Hollywood will ever give videogames the respect they deserve? or are we gonna see a million more Uwe Bolls that just make videogame movies because they can get a quick buck out of them and show no respect to the source material

Here's one that will either bond Samit with the rest of the cast or further divide them:

So, looking at baseball from a game design standpoint, is there something inherently boring as shit about a sport where teams take turns allowing a maximum of four players do anything at all? Perhaps this is why a baseball game with MMO style league elements has never been tried? Nobody wants to spend an entire afternoon as the third string pitcher watching other people stand around doing little to nothing.

A lot of artists draw inspiration from movies and books when they write their songs/concept albums. Do you think that there is room for songs/concept albums inspired by videogames in the world of music? If so, wich games do you think could provide good source material?

PS: I'm talking about serious artistic songs, not stupid Halo/WoW fansongs about how much they love to "pwn tha n00bs!!!11".

Something from IRC. What about the idea of a price-based scoring system, as in rating the game based on an appraisal of its worth. Would this be a clearer way of rating games or would it make the games quality ever more ambiguous? Also, do you think this would have a positive or negative effect on fanboy reactions?

Have you and your friends ever come up with entire interlocking backstories and an accompanying universe for your "create a character" players in a game, say for example, Soul Calibur 4, and then left the stock characters and universe completely behind?

It seems that good fighting games with excellent character creation are especially ripe for this sort of play, and the personalized results can far outshine the original intended product.

Everyone: What are your best multiplayer experiences, both offline and online, and do you prefer premade game types in multiplayer games or times when you make your own less official games to play such as random fun in GTA IV's free mode? I don't mean just great moments but game modes which struck a truly awesome note or a situation with friends that made a game amazing. For me Perfect Dark's multiplayer is my favourite pass time with my mates when we want to just play games. If there were four of us we'd just make some awesome game types and have loads of fun, but I found it best when it was just me and a friend, we'd usually make up some sort of backstory before starting it up and it made it that much more fun to stick to it.

As I said previously GTA IV's free mode was great with friends (matchamking was just stupid deathmatch), as you could do most things you could think of there. We wasted more time messing around the city than we did playing the actual game.
