Oh lawd, it's another Podtoid. Somebody call the po-lice.

Tonight, Jim, Aaron, Topher and myself will discuss Sega's decision to stop producing hardware, how fans "should" react to preview info about games they're really looking forward to, and Jim's recent Ten Golden Rules article.

As you might have guessed, we'll need listener questions after we're done with all that. The best one will net the person who asked it a Dtoid swag bag, which you could hypothetically show off to your friends. Hit the jump and start asking stuff.

Additionally, if your first question is "did Tiff respond to your phone message," the answer is, as of today, no.

Are Nintendo really serious about releasing rehashed GC games with waggle to appeal to "core" gamers.

Will anyone be stupid enough to buy it when you can buy the GC originals for less than a tenner second hand.

If SEGA was an evil (but not quite mad) scientist, do you think it would ever be able to make a good doomsday device? Or would that other Japaness evil (and very mad) scientist always make a more widely appealing device that can cater better to the needs of the evil community?

Can SEGA (the evil scientist) even MAKE a doomsday device at all without a successful blue henchman?

I was talking to my sister the other night about Jim's ten golden rules. We had our laughs and my sister and I talked about the character designs of females within video games.

She said that as an artist it is frustrating to see some of the female characters drawn out in video games. For instance, large boobs flopping around, female designs, and how they run.

Everytime she sees a character with large tits flopping around, she says "My god, her back must be hurting or she has the best bra ever made to support her rack."

She's also noticed that some female characters have pronounced shoulders and neck lines, though that's what men have and women generally have less pronounced shoulders and smaller neck muscles.

And lastly, some of the characters she's noticed run using their shoulders, but women generally run with their hips. This is all frustrating to her since she's an artist. Have you guys noticed this in video games (besides the massive tits flopping around) as well? Do you all agree or disagree with my sister?

If video games had not made the leap from 2D to 3D yet, would robust(y) female video game characters have such a large impact on sales like it does now? Like if Lara Croft was still a 2D sprite, would her frachise have even survived at all?

In the year 2031, video games dictate the flow of society. Children who grew up with HaLo has their classics have turned into slaves of the video game corporate dystopian regime.

The world and industry is ran by mediocre commercialization games, and is on the brink of collapse as our once innocent children are now meaty masses that gobble up Halo 30 and Generic Game 12 Starring Mtn Dew (actual name). Developers are frequently whipped to produce such things, and anyone who dares try to deviate from this unspoken charter is found and brutally murdered.

As a member of a growing resistance movement that stands for all that is good in entrainment and games against a dystopian society, what would your code-names be and your distinct "place" in the resistance? Please take into account that you will all be Brad Nicholson buff from the resistance training and have all your shirts stained with Doritos.

as formerly underdeveloped countries begin to modernize and embrace the digital age, and gaming as a viable medium for expression, do you believe we'll have a something akin to a design renaissance, where so far unseen cultural influences, mythologies, and esoteric histories of those nations will provide new an interesting takes on the medium ? Imagine a future of ARPGs (african rpgs) instead of JRPGs. Indie Shmups from Brazil. Weird Adventure games from Guam.

Thanks for posting this early Anthony, but my fear of being unable to repost my question as instructed was made irrelevant by the fact that I lost my job. Anyways, here we go again.

Every generation of gaming has some aspect that we are eventually thankful to see go away. Whether its getting stuck on "THE END" screen after the credits roll at the end of an old 8-bit game or the "EXTREME" nature of much of the 16 bit era, we are all reminded of these things at some point and are thankful at their departure. My question is what common aspect in this generation of gaming do you think we will see go and be thankful for the departure?

A few things I would like to add: "Play it Loud" was awesome if only for the Kirby Superstar commercial; Jim's 10 golden rules article was brilliant; and holy shit Dead Rising 2.

Do you think that powerups are relevant in modern games? They are rapidly being replaced by new mechanics, but are they fun?

One example: Developers are turning more towards making health restoration dependent on just waiting around for your bar to fill up.

RPG like elements have made their way into several genres of games these days, everything from sports to shooters have been touched. Also, many developers seem to be trying to find ways to make the action of a battle seem more exciting and less structured for those who don't froth at the mouth at the next detail dropped about FF13. My question is do you think that we will see further blending of genres and if so, do you think that we will end up with a games that we can no longer describe as simply, "RPG", or "Platformer" or "Shooter"?

My question stems from the recent dissolution of Band of Brothers in EVE Online. I wasn’t necessarily surprised by what happened, but was impressed how it dramatically shifted the dynamics of the game and how far reaching the implications were. Do you think developers should actively try to design online games so that decisions made by a few powerful players can rapidly shift the structure and dynamics of a game? Should more MMORPGs consider adding political or economic constructs like governments or corporations in order to facilitate these shifts?

In 2007 I was surprised and delighted while playing through Half-Life 2: Episode 2 to hear of a link between it and Portal (and of course, there is the line in "Still Alive" that links the two as well), showing that the two games which were apparently separate actually exist within the same universe. Do you think that Left 4 Dead exists in the Half-Life universe as well, or is it just a fun multiplayer game that has little to do with the Half-Life series aside from using the Source engine and being developed by Valve, a la Team Fortress 2? Or more curtly, will we hear mention of "infection" or "Riverside" or anything from Left 4 Dead in Half-Life 2: Episode 3?

What game(s) do you constantly strive to maintain your supremacy over your friends/agitated colleagues?

For me, it's Street Fighter III: Third Strike (for obvious reasons). With Akuma, I'm damn near unstoppable but I have a feeling if I entered any sort of tournament I'd get my ass handed to me, and I don't need an abasing of that colossal magnitude.

Eagerly awaiting SFIV... But the absence of Parrying has me worried.

On the topic of females in games.

Two of my favourite games of all times would be the No One Lives Forever Games by Monolith. Though critically acclaimed these titles suffered from low sales. The publisher apparently attributed this to the fact that the players were forced to take the role of a strong female character. Therefore they "forced" Monolith to make the expansion "Contract Jack" which had the player take the role of a male protagonist, which flopped mostly because it was a hastily assembled piece of shit.
Do you think that the chracter of Cate Archer was the reason for the serie's low sales and do you think that in these days a continuation of the series would be successful, seeing as gaming is now pretty much accepted in the general public and there are a lot more female gamers than there were back in 2002?

If you could slap the shit out of any videogame hero or heroines who would it be and why? Mine would be Tidus from Final Fantasy 10. For being the least interesting final fantasy character in god knows how long, and i think having my hand print across his face might add some creativity to his character design.

On the topic of females in games:

What traits of a well written character role do you think make that role only portray able by a character of a specific gender, if any at all?

If my question was a little confusing, here are some examples that might make it a bit clearer:

Ex 1:Would Alyx Vance have been as great a character if she had been a male? Would that role have to be changed too drastically to accommodate such a change?

Ex 2:Would Aaron Linde's Bonerquest have been as great if you were helping the Queen find a boner instead of helping the King get a boner? Would the game have to have been changed a lot to accommodate such a change?

Ex 3:In MGS3, The Boss was used to achieve a motherly figure to Snake/Big Boss. Could such an effect have been achieved if The Boss were a male character being a fatherly figure to Snake/Big Boss?

Anyhow, I hope my question came across well enough that you guys could talk about it. Happy podcasting.

I recently got my grubby negroid hands on a copy of Indigo Prophecy. I popped it in and enjoyed the opening and the diner part. About two hours into the game, I was already looking forward to an awesome clusterfuck ending where shit would get real and all would be revealed. Unfortunately, said clusterfuck ending never occured. Instead, ancient Mayans fight against the computers for magical powers that would rule the world...and the only thing that can stop them is the underground hobo resistance.

I think my question is what games have you played (recently or whenever) that you feel started off well but ended on a completely non sequitur note? Not exactly a bad ending per se, but more like Metal Gear ending with a clip from Seinfeld.

What sort of narrative devices are unique to the video game medium? I speak of things like Bioshock's audio logs from characters of Rapture's universe, or Aaron Linde's BonerQuest's innovative use of the Boner-Haiku system.

Do you see any possible revolutions in the future of story-telling in video games, like true dynamic storylines that have completely different narrative paths through a world to a hundred different possible endings, unlike the current good ending/bad ending shenanigans? Or will we always be limited software costs and time-constraints?

Yeah the economy sucks.

Because of this it'll make sense for gaming companies to try to cut costs in whatever ways they can. Which parts of the production process should get a bit of budget taken away?

Are we willing to sacrifice gorgeous 3D graphics just so a game can come out and actually make a profit?

Personally I believe that the marketing budgets could be reduced, because they're huge and more often than never it's this expense that creates a level of hype that no game could ever live up to.

So in a strange fever dream i had an idea that was going to make me and every other programmer obsolete. What will happen when artificial intelligence gets to the standard that it can write programs, think about it instead of buying games you sit in front of your console and go I want to play a racing game and it gives you a generic racing game.
10 seconds later you say you want a Ferrari and on the fly it reprograms and your in a Ferrari. 2 minutes later you you want a bear cannon on the roof of your Ferrari and there it is, as long as you can think of it it can make it.
All that will be left is a youtube for games where people put up there best ideas.
