Tomb Raider: Underworld revealed

     Lara Croft

After a long waiting period of new game names, rumors, and trademarks we finally get a peak into Tomb Raider:Underworld - a continuation of Legend (finally!) which is supported by a brand new engine. Update: I've been digging some more and found this thread which contains more details and facts about the game. Play Magazine has the exclusive:

"In the level where Lara explores Southern Mexico, she leaves footprints in the mud, but it's raining so they wash away. The bodies she leaves behind in combat encounters will stay, however, as will the debris from any destruction she causes,"

Lara looks amazing.  I've uploaded a few of the images released and the Play article for your viewing. I'm such a huge fan of the franchise and waiting for the 8th installment is painful!  If you 'd like to see the interview with developer Eric Lindstrom you can download your copy of the magazine. I cannot wait!

[Editor's note: If you've also been living under a rock like me this is probably the first time you're seeing these images. Luckily, Lauren is a big fan of the series and graced our c-blogs with the scoop. Great find! Hit the jump for some copy pasta.  -Niero]

Lara Croft Model

*Lara's body reacts to the weather and environment - if it is hot, she will sweat. If it is raining, the water will trickle down her body. If it is muddy, dirt will cling to her and gradually wash off due to the rainfall. Her clothes will also react to changing environmental conditions. Lara interacts with environmental foliage, sweeping it away as she passes through it.

*Crystal Dynamics have introduced motion capture for the first time in a Tomb Raider game. Motion capture brings increased realism and fluidity to Lara's movements.

*Lara will have high quality facial animations and lip-synch.

Environments

* TRU uses a realistic and dynamic weather system including torrential rain pour, thunderclouds and lightning.

* An improved physics engine means that the whole world is reacts to Lara's presence and has memory. Lara leaves footprints in the mud. Debris and bodies will no longer vanish, providing valuable markers of where the player has been in the game world.

*An innovative lighting system moves beyond simple dynamic lighting to create stunning and realistic environments.

*The game is more open-ended than ever before, giving players the choice of how to tackle situations.

*Crystal Dynamics travelled on location to photograph the Mayan tombs ensuring a realistic look to the ruins.

*All cutscenes are made using the in-game engine.

Combat

*Lara can now perform close quarters combat and melee moves. These moves are focused on repelling enemies so she can shoot them with less risk to herself.

*Multiple targets can be shot, with one gun focusing on one target while the other gun focusses on another.

Weapons

*Dual Pistols
*Grenades

Gear

*Lara will have numerous costume changes throughout the game with more available as unlockables.

*Environmental objects can be used in a variety of different ways, both as weapons and tools to aid climbing.

*The grapple tool is back although it is unknown as to whether it is hooked or magnetic.

Vehicles

*Lara's motorbike is the only confirmed vehicle in the game so far. It will have a greater role in puzzle solving.

Something like this is pivotal for the TR saga. Its seen its ups and downs, but now being remade in a "new light" is the sweetest reward.

Although those are test shots, can only imagine what a full gunning Lara will be like. Now this finally answeres that question.. the current Lara (game model) finally gets to hone all those skills she's learned.

Actually it would be alot of fun to hear unlockable commentary & test footage. (ala DMC easter eggs)

I definitely want to pickup this issue soon.

Maybe they'll make a good Tomb Raider game for the first time in... a long, long time.

Lara always wears such sensible clothing for the situation doesn't she? Like Jill in Resident Evil 3. Well, at least we have something to stare at when she's climbing up cliffs and shit.

You know, I've been a Tomb Raider fan since the first one...well, pretty much of only the first one and then Legends and Anniversary. The ones in between rank from decent to down right shit. But, anyway, I'm a big enough fan of Tomb Raider, but screw that. We've got enough Tomb Raider games at the the moment. Where the fuck is the next :Legacy of Kain! Kain rocks! Simon Templeman rocks even harder! Together you get one of the greatest characters of all time.

I loved Legend and Anniversary! I can't wait to see what else is in store. Crystal Dynamics has done so for this franchise than what Core ever did at the beginning.

I don't know. Core got tomb raider started and I really enjoyed everything before angel of darkness but that one sucked. I do love what Crystal Dynamics is doing however!¬

Angel of Darkness wasn't made by the Core you knew from the previous games.
Actually Core killed her off in Last Revelation to screw the new guys.
Then again, Toby Gard left Core after the first one. He wasn't too keen of the way they were treating his creation.

I know that Lara Croft is the typical video game girl hottie, and she's old school... but damn, she still looks fine as hell!

Oh kill me for finding a video game character hot... SHE IS HOT THOUGH!

But this game sounds like it'll be pretty awesome, all the aspects of weather and how environments stay adjusted, sounds great!

Been waiting for a good Tomb Raider since Legend. Mmm next gen Lara, wet or muddy bewbs, or what if shes cold? But to turn off the fap part of my brain here for a sec, the screens look very promising and it seems like they are on the right track with the look and feel of the game. I'm not surprised they used mo-cap. The technology has gotten a lot better, and if she moves more fluidly than before then I'm all for it. Can't wait to see more of this game as it gets closer to release. Also bewbs again.

Why not MaSterMS? Tomb Raider 1 was fun and unique at the time. It invented modern 3D action games. It was being made around the time Mario64 was coming out. But Mario64 made it outta the gate first. So now now most gamers and historians give mario64 a blowjob, i mean all the credit for inventing modern 3D games. Fuck that!

Also: What is with all the TR haters? lol.

In Tomb Raider Legends her avatar reacted to the environment. If you got out of the water, she was wet and her skin would be all shiny, and her top would slowly dry out as you moved about.

I've never seen so much detail on such a minor thing, I wonder why? :-P

Looks good.....I swear that motion capture was used in previous Tomb Raider games though, I remember seeing a documentry about Core and how all of Lara's moveset was recorded via motion capture. Surely this isn't the first TR game to use such technology then?
