Tomb Raider Trilogy dated for March 22 photo

Sony has announced that the latest remastered HD collection, Tomb Raider Trilogy, will be hitting the PlayStation 3 exclusively on March 22. As previously revealed, the game features Anniversary, Legend and Underworld, all with Trophy support.

The game will include some non-gaming extras for your pleasure, including a PS3 static theme and two avatars for PlayStation Home -- Lara Croft and a Viking Thrall. Keeping in line with previous remasters, the whole package will set you back $39.99.

Tomb Raider is one of those curious franchises I've never been able to get into for reasons I cannot comprehend. I might try to break that by picking this up.

I'm glad these games are getting the HD treatment but I'm waiting on PS2 exclusives. I already have these games on Steam (as well as the Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia games). Will Sony announce a Metal Gear Solid, Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter, and Kingdom Hearts collection already?!

Still, good to see these games making their way to a new audience (granted 'Tomb Raider Underworld' was already on the PS3 but you get the point).

I thought the trilogy would have the Tomb raiders from the Playstation. I can now see why they didn't bring it to the 360

Might've bought it for the 360, but alas.

I wish this package was Tomb Raider 1-3. I'd consider Tomb Raider 2 one of the best games ever made, and it would look great in HD.

Oh blood fuck. Can't they just stop already.

First I played Diablo. I would have rather played Demon's Souls. In a second. The technology just wasn't there in 96' I think it was.

Now I have Uncharted I don't need Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider could have invested in making an excellent Tomb Raider game - but they didn't. They made year after year shit games with far too little improvement. Fuck Tomb Raider. They had their chance and they blew it.

This is nice, but I think I'll try to hold out for the new Tomb Raider. The new Natalie Drake is hot!!

@Mr.Rockso - Sony can't announce games they don't make.

Also, Nintendo had a stake in the creation of MGS:The Twin Snakes, so an MGS collection would pretty much just be MGS2 and 3.

I really don't see what most of these collections stand to gain, you know, aside from Sony using HD remasters as an excuse not to reinstate backward compatibility on PS3 or put them up for download on PSN.

Yeah, I went there.

How the hell can they call this a "trilogy?" I haven't played Underworld, but I played Legend and Anniversary. Legend seemed to kick off a trilogy, but Anniversary was just an unrelated remake of the first Tomb Raider. Regardless of whether Underworld covered the same story as Legend, this isn't a trilogy.

@The Silent Protagonist - Sony published Ratchet & Clank and Jak and Daxter so, yeah, they did make those. And yes, obviously Sony didn't make Metal Gear Solid or Kingdom Hearts. When I say "announce", I mean push these developers to announce collections the way Sony did with Ubisoft announcing Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell trilogies.

Even though Nintendo helped supervise the production of 'Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes', Konami is the one that owns the rights to the game (they did publish it, not Nintendo) so they could port it to the 360 for all they cared. It's Konami's choice if they want to include it in the collection, not Nintendo's (and I hope Konami does include it).

Also, I've given up on backward compatibility. If it comes back, awesome. If not, whatever. I play some of my PS2 games today and they look like ass on my HDTV. I'd much rather have developers remaster these games in HD, with trophies, better framerate, extra features, all on one blu-ray disc that won't scratch instead of 3 or 4 DVDs that are worn out. But that's my two cents.

The last time I played/purchased a Tomb Raider game was the very first one on the PC. I definitely had fun with it at the time, and even installed the Nude Raider patch. I never beat the game though. And I never really had a desire to pick up future Tomb Raider games.

I played all 3 on x360 not too long ago. Underworld is definitely already HD and looks great to me. The other two were early "next-gen" games so I figured they just didn't look that great, but as far as I know they were HD. This seems strange to call it re-mastering. Now, God of War I+II definitely were...but this?? Did 2 of the games not come out for PS3?

I just don't get how you can have "HD remasters" of three games that have been HD, from this console generation, since they launched. Like... well done, Sony, you've remastered something so that it looks how it looked four years ago. Hurrah?

That said, fuck the haters, Tomb Raider is brilliant and Legend and Underworld are two of the best action games of this console generation.

@ Ace Flibble,
Legend and Anniversary were released on PS2 (not PS3), PC, and X360. So for the PS3, these two ARE HD remasters. Underworld is just thrown in as a bonus i guess. Personally, I can't wait as I've only played the PS2 versions.

@thehoytman,
I see your point on the "trilogy", but I guess by definition, this is a 3 game TR pack, thus it is, by definition, a trilogy of Tomb Raider games.

@Brettzies - Yes. Tomb Raider Anniversary and Legend never released on the PS3. I don't know why they're really "remastering" the PS2 versions anyway. Why not just port the two from the 360 to the PS3 bundled together with Uncderworld? Or maybe that's what they're doing? Whatever it is, now PS3 owners can play the games too.

Remastering the PS2 versions as opposed to, I don't know, releasing the HD versions already released on the Xbox 360 when they came out seems a bit paradoxical to me - but I'm sure it makes sense in some backwards universe.

Really, I don't understand this. These are all games that were released during this console generation. How the hell can you HD remix something that was already in HD?

@DrRockso...I see. Anniversary was the first TR I played and I really liked it. Played Legends next and though nice, wasn't quite as good to me. I played them so I could get to Underworld. Have to say, Underworld blew me away with the leap in graphics quality from the previous two. Great lighting and Lara looked great too. TR seems to have gotten a bad wrap in recent years, but I completely enjoyed it. Even bought the DLC.

I have never been attracted to this franchise either. I'm not sure I might give it a chance.

@Brettzies - Nice. I recently purchased the Square-Enix-Eidos pack on Steam for 88% off and received all these Tomb Raider games with it. I plan to plan them some day but I always heard people ragging on them. Granted I think the problem is Tomb Raider now has to compete with Uncharted and that's difficult. I'll definitely play them sometime. Glad to hear they're good. So, would you say Underworld > Anniversary > Legends?
Brettzies's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/06/2011 20:33

If you were only going to play one I'd play Underworld. If you plan to play all three I'd do them Anniversary, Legends, then Underworld.

Anniversary is kind of a remake of the original I think.
