Quantcast

Simon, Goeman, and Shockman -- together at last. This week, the Virtual Console sees a relatively solid line-up with Castlevania (NES, 500 Wii Points); Legend of the Mystical Ninja (SNES, 800 Wii Points); and Shockman (TurboGrafx 16, 600 Wii Points).

Castlevania needs no introduction. If you're somehow confused as to why this game is considered a gem among Virtual Console releases, go into the woods and blow bubbles with a plastic bag over your head. I'll come retrieve your carcass after the wolves have picked it over.

Konami's Legend of the Mystical Ninja on the other hand, might only hold a special place in the hearts of the truly nerdy. The two player cooperative action-adventure was the first game in the popular Japanese series, Ganbare Goeman, to make its way to the United States.

Players would explore towns, purchase items, and learn special attacks as the game progressed. There was even a nod to Konami's shooters, as one of the included mini-games was a recreation of the first level in Gradius!

As far as Shockman is concerned, I think this (from the press release) says it all:

It's been two years since Arnold and Sonya were made into Shockmen.
Poor Sonya.

Those tigers and other creature you ride were SWEET! Piggyback riding in that game was just fun! (Mystical Ninja)

Mystical Ninja is one of the best co-op games on the SNES. No joke.

I must be one of the truly nerdy then. Legend of the Mystical Ninja is going to be the first game I'm buying off the VC since Ice Climber.

I agree with Aaron, it definitely was. It's a shame Goemon never really got that big here, apparently all of the games were pretty good. I'd like to play it again though, it's definitely been awhile.

Damn. Mystical Ninja. Nobody really pushed the beauty of the SNES color range like Konami. I typically play it for half an hour just to get to the third stage where you're in the carnival and have a world of mini-games you can play within the game. Killer soundtrack, too.

^ Is picking up Mystical Ninja as soon as he finishes up his finals. It'll be a present to myself.

If only the nerds like Mystical Ninja, then I'm nerdcore.

Ninjas, Vampires, and crossdressing Shockmen. It's a good start to this week.

Isn't Mystical Ninja the game with a pipe and herbs as a weapon?

I played a Goeman a long time ago. I can't remember if it was this one or if it was on the 64. All I remember was that it was 2 Player co-op, it had a lot of colors and you whacked stuff with sticks. I also remember having fun.

I'll hold out for mystical ninja starring goemon on the n64. Definately one of my top 5 games for the console. It's got zelda type exploration of a huge game world, 4 characters with different puzzle solving abilities, a pretty damn amusing story(not funny haha, funny japanese), and awesome giant robot battles. What more could you ask for?

Castlevania is a classic, but I'm not enough of a masochist to play it without save states.

Mystical Ninja is one of my favorite SNES games. My dad got me it isntead of Bart's Nightmare for Christmas back in the day. Thank God, too. A terrific game.

I'm sorry I never finished it. The game got damn hard toward the end, and you had to rely on crazy-expensive jutsu to beat the bosses. I couldn't stay mad at it, though. Love that game.

Fuck yeah!! Two good weeks in a row, keep em coming Nintendo!

My friend and I used to play mystical ninja co-op and he piggy backed on me all the time cuz he'd always get his ass killed. He'd always cut me off in the painting mini-game too hahaha Good times.
