Today's VC releases: two 'mons' and a 'man'

Simon, Goeman, and Shockman -- together at last. This week, the Virtual Console sees a relatively solid line-up with Castlevania (NES, 500 Wii Points); Legend of the Mystical Ninja (SNES, 800 Wii Points); and Shockman (TurboGrafx 16, 600 Wii Points).

Castlevania needs no introduction. If you're somehow confused as to why this game is considered a gem among Virtual Console releases, go into the woods and blow bubbles with a plastic bag over your head. I'll come retrieve your carcass after the wolves have picked it over.

Konami's Legend of the Mystical Ninja on the other hand, might only hold a special place in the hearts of the truly nerdy. The two player cooperative action-adventure was the first game in the popular Japanese series, Ganbare Goeman, to make its way to the United States.

Players would explore towns, purchase items, and learn special attacks as the game progressed. There was even a nod to Konami's shooters, as one of the included mini-games was a recreation of the first level in Gradius!

As far as Shockman is concerned, I think this (from the press release) says it all:

It's been two years since Arnold and Sonya were made into Shockmen.
Poor Sonya.

Dark water and the things below give me the shivers

If we're all confessing our gaming-related fears, I might as well share mine. I can't stand the water. More specifically, I can't stand what lives under the water. If there is ever a section of a game that will make me want to stop playing, it probably involves getting your toes wet and taking a little swim with, well, whatever. I can thank Super Mario Bros. 3 for this phobia. more

I think videogames made me hate funhouses

I don't like funhouses, although, I suppose I haven't given them a fair shake. I've never been inside one, but I'm pretty certain that makes no difference. You see, videogames trained me at a very young age to hate funhouses....more
