Today's VC releases: Ghouls, Swords, and Elevators photo

Nintendo has announced that Super Ghouls N' Ghosts (SNES, 800 points); Sword of Vermillion (Genesis, 800 points); and Elevator Action (NES, 500 points), will all be hitting the Virtual Console today.

Among the three, Super Ghouls N' Ghosts is the one game that helped me hone my profanity hurling skills in middle school. And might I add, best box art art ever? Is that a ghoulie popping up from behind that tombstone? For those things, Capcom, I salute you. Pew pew pew!

Hit the jump for the full press release.
Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii™ video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Elevator Action (NES®, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): This is a multidirectional, scroll-type spy-action game that is a blast from the past. Control a spy and sneak alone into a building to steal the secret papers hidden there. Use a pistol, kicks, an elevator and even the lights to take out the building's guards. The gun-fighting action is full of thrills. Players will need speed and timing to get on the elevators, move between floors, steal the secret papers and escape from the basement parking lot.

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts™ (Super NES®, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): The third game in the legendary Ghosts 'n Goblins series of video games, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts follows Arthur in another quest to rescue the princess, his fair maiden and damsel in distress at large. Players take control of Arthur and defeat the creatures of the night to save the day once more. Discover what glory awaits those brave enough to take on the armies of Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

Sword of Vermilion™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): Sword of Vermilion is about the role of Erik's son, who takes on a quest of revenge to defeat Tsarkon and free the world of Vermilion from evil. In the town of Excalabria, the people went about their business and tended to the fields. One day, vicious fighting broke out everywhere as the army of Cartahena, led by the wizard-king Tsarkon, swarmed all over the town. The townsmen were overwhelmed. The castle of King Erik V collapsed. Erik summoned his bravest, strongest and most faithful warrior, Blade, and gave him his infant son and an ancient family heirloom, the ring of wisdom. He ordered Blade to save himself and the child while the castle burned. Blade traveled to a small village named Wyclif, where he settled down and raised the child as his own son. Eighteen years later, the son of Erik begins his quest. Save the world of Vermilion and fulfill the prophecy of the Malaga fortune-tellers!

Elevator action for 5 bucks? Totally not worth it!

G&G on the other hand is freaking awesome and really deserve a hot spot next to Contra 3 in your Wii's library of "horribly difficult games to beat"!

Elevator action... is that a porn game?

Featuring Aerosmith maybe?

SG&G... just thinking of that game sends me into fits of rage. I think I'll pass on this one, I don't want to start beating my wife.

My roommate has been clamoring for Excitebike... Any word on if/when this is coming?

Super Ghouls and Ghosts haunts my dreams. That game beat me. I don't know if I can stand another go at it.

Yeah, it was a major pain in the ass, but it wasn't as maddeningly frustrating as the Genesis version- you know, the one where you had to beat the game /twice/ to, uh, beat the game /once/?

I never really understood that one.

Good to see that Capcom plans to further support the Virtual Console.

I've never heard of Elevator Action before. Who developed/published it?

Elevator Action was developed and released by Taito; there was an arcade versio in the early 80s and a few years later, it hit the NES. It makes me feel old that someone has never heard of it.

And no, it's not a porno; but with some clever ROM hacking skills, one of our readers can make it happen!

Hm, I was hoping the first of Sega's four recent announcements would end up being Beyond Oasis. I believe I'll pass on Sword of Vermillion.

You guys ever look into Gametap? All of those games are on there including tons of the past vc releases. Using a wired 360 controller works perfect. Just an fyi.

Yeah, but I own a Wii, and I'm on mac, and I don't like the whole concept of renting my games on a month to month basis.

If I wanted to rent, I'd go to Colortyme and rents me a SNES.

Oh, 3rd parties, Thank you!
Capcom, please sir, may we have some more?

How much is GameTap per month and do they want to give me a free subscription because I'm such an influential member of the online community?

...ok, I'm drunk

But for real, I played with the service in beta, and was impressed. The new Sam and Max episodes are REALLY tempting.

Blindside, Contra III is a hard game by default, no denying that. If you put in the time to master it like I did though (and I assume you too), of course it's easier. It can still be hard on... hard. SG&G though, THAT one is always hard, since some enemies seem to move randomly and can't really be memorized like Contra. I am so buying SG&G when I get home today.

I buckled under and got gametap for a few games I really wanted to play and for multiplayer neogeo games. it's been a mixed bag but overall I'm really happy with it. some of the shit on there is awesome. if you get a full year it's 6.95 month or 7.95-9.95 depending on other plans. so far I think it's worth it to not have to hassle with emus, plus they have adult swim episodes streaming

I don't know about an exact date for excitebike, but I know the most recent Nintendo Power was showing it as a VC release, so I can't imagine it'll be too much longer.

I could really use demo trials on VC titles right about now... Sucks that there's no way to test these bad boys out.

For old school arcade, neogeo, genesis titles, gametap is excellent. Hell, they even have buddy lists and leaderboards. Every game is pre mapped to the 360 wired if you have it.

@ Nick -Brutal- Chester:

It's $9.95 a month, $.99 the first month. There's cheaper plans if you buy 3, 6, or 12 month subscription blocks. I've been a subscriber to Gametap for over a year now, really love it. My screen name on there is Mxyzptlk if anyone wants to play a lagtastic challenge game.

Ah, an old arcade game, no wonder I never heard of it. On a related note: is it bad that I get Taito and Tecmo confused sometimes?

I've got the next two days off, so I'll probably do some Gametapping and reregister for all the challenge games I cleared out of my cache. I could definitely go for some Bust-A-Move. Need to burn some DVDs and free up space on my drive too.

Someone should start a forum thread with everyone's Gametap ids and the Challenge games they've registered for. I might do that tonight at work if nobody beats me to it.

I tired Gametap once for free for a single game. I think it was the arcade game Magic Sword or something like that. I loved that game.
