THIS. FUCKING THIS.
I don't buy ANYTHING that is only available through digital distribution. My God, I have trouble putting up the money to buy STEAM games at this point.
Xbox Live Arcade games, PSN games, WiiWare... NONE of them will be playable in the future without hacking the shit out of the systems you want to play them on, or resorting to emulation, which shouldn't have to be done. I've said it before and I'll say it again -- As far as retro gaming is concerned, digital distribution will be gaming's downfall.
Come on, hate on this crap where they take down titles as much as you want, but try, try, try not to be such a moron about it. I realize that's a tall order for most of the Destructoid community.
It's just ok, I like the original better.
There's been a few games delisted, DOOM and Ultimate MK3 are both gone too. I have both and can still play them online.
The only issue I can think of is if you delete or lose it some other way and need to redownload later. It's not like Best Buy would give me a free copy of my Halo Reach disc if I lost or destroyed it, so I don't see that as a big advantage for physical media.
On consoles, there is no way to back it up or make copies. You are completely dependent on the internet to obtain your games. That reason alone makes digital distribution hurt on consoles.
...It's just a shame that the PSN's Download List feature is so damn unwieldy. At least with XBL you can go to the website and Ctrl+F what you want. And Steam's just a dream to redownload from (okay, maybe that was kinda over-exaggerated, but it is pretty damn easy to get your stuff back on your system).
There needs to be a way to guarantee service for a certain period of time. As much as I love Steam, even they've said themselves that there's no guarantee that you'll be able to download a game 1, 5, 10 years from now. The same goes for Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, and every other company that provides some sort of digital distribution service.
Steam has said, however, that they will release a "patch" that will allow all their games to be played without the Steam service running. I'm sure that will cause them some legal troubles with the companies that use them to publish, but at least it's a step in the right direction. On the other hand, you'll have to have downloaded those games previous to that happening as you won't be able to download them anymore. That being said, Steam going out of business would be like Microsoft going out of business at this point. It's highly unlikely, but possible.
Either way, I'm glad that they at least give us time to download it before dropping it. They've just got a long ways to go before they offer the comfort of physical media. :)
I still have Doom and UMK3 and they were both removed a long time ago.
When games are delisted they're not deleted from Xbox Live, they're just no longer available for a new purchase. You can redownload delisted games even if you've deleted them.
They did this awhile ago for titles like Double Dragon arcade.
This is also why I don't support digital distribution in really any format, except maybe GOG. I don't want to pay for a software license, I want a hardcopy (with license).
so i think its a non issue.
Uh...no, Jim, that's incorrect. More like one can't rely on creating games off of other people's properties forever. But hey, keep up the sensationalist and fear-mongering posts; that's kinda your gimmick, isn't it?
Eventually, contracts will include clauses for permanent licensing for the specific product at hand. The only reason this still happens now is because a lot of these older games were created before digital was even a possibility.
Downloading games ROCKS and backwards compatible support for PSN and Live games will undoubtedly be a feature of future respective consoles. I haven't ever lost access to a single download game from PSN, Steam, or Live (the three big ones) and I download games A LOT. And these services are only getting BETTER over time. Soon, cloud saving will be standard for all of them and you won't even be at risk of losing SAVES, let alone games.
At the same time, I will never EVER buy a downloadable game on a Nintendo system until there exists a persistent overarching account (and even then I'd be tentative) so that you can recover games when your current system is kaput. They're so behind the times that they'd have to make some major strides in the right direction to get me change my stance.
If you lose it, that's your fault.
It's no different than a game being pulled from store shelves but you still have a copy.
CLOUD gaming on the other hand is a totally different issue.
Or would you rather pay $50 for a disc version of TMNT Reshelled?
2. This means this is roughly equivalent to not being able to buy it in stores anymore
3. This has nothing to do with whether digital is better or worse than physical
Physical games go out of print too - sometimes VERY soon (ie ATLUS).
At least I know that if I "lose" my digital copy from pretty much any service, I can re-download it at no cost. If I lose my super rare copy of (X), I'm out $150 on a used trashy copy off Ebay.
@TJF588
Are you SURE that's true?
I bought Robotron from XBLA - it went off the marketplace - I tried to re-download it on a new console with my account, and it said "file not found".
That could have been an unrelated occurrence (a temporary outage), but I just want to see if anyone's actually checked it themselves, rather than rely on hearsay from Microsoft. I know every other digital service allows you to re-queue purchases on a housed server - so that's a good thing for sure!
Physical games go out of print
Delisting can sometimes be solved by not licensing so much shit to put in your games, its why we have so much difficulty getting Virtual Console and PSOne games as it is (but you'll blame Sony and Nintendo for being lazy anyway).
Most people didn't buy every game they own while it was still in print. There are whole consoles that I never owned and are no longer produced, for example the Dreamcast. But I can always buy that console and any game for it secondhand, because it was all physical product. If that system was all digital distribution, to me it would be like it never existed, because I didn't buy it within that brief window it was being sold firsthand.
The main issue here isn't about people losing a game who have bought it. It's about no one else ever being able to buy it again, in any way, after June 30.
We've seen the original Xbox Live disappear, and we know that the gaming companies will only care about selling us the next big thing. This paints a picture of a very bleak future for those who care about gaming history, if digital distribution really is that future.
Whenever I buy a game off of XBLA (or download content) and I really enjoy it, my first thought is always "I better enjoy it while I can." It's sad because some really great games are going to be lost in this mess.
And please, lets not spare any tears about TMNT: Re-Shelled. The game was fucking horrible.
