Titan Quest developer folds, Diablo fans saw at their wrists photo

Most hardcore Diablo fans have accepted that the titanic success of World of Warcraft means there will likely never be a Diablo 3, but we have tried to sate our addiction with Diablo-clones. Titan Quest was one of these and was in fact fairly well received, earning positive reviews from multiple websites. Iron Lore Entertainment has posted an official statement on their homepage, which is excerpted below:

It is with great regret that we must announce that as of close of business Tuesday, February 19, 2008 Iron Lore Entertainment has ceased active game development. Several unrelated events occurred which resulted in Iron Lore being unable to secure funding for its next project.

We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who has helped us in the last seven years – our team who moved mountains to create such great games, our publisher THQ who has been a great partner through three product development cycles, and most of all our customers and fans. We owe all of the success we’ve had to you, and our greatest satisfaction has come from creating games that have given enjoyment to the community.

Oh well. Now Diablo addicts will have to turn to Mythos for their hack and slashing needs, which is not so bad since its pretty much the spiritual sequel to Diablo anyway as far as the feel of play goes. Farewell Iron Lore, we hardly knew ye.

NO! NO NO NO NO NO!

WHY? This game was so great. People may seem I am out of line but Diablo was barely better than Titan Quest only on the grounds of its online play.

I was definitely looking forward to a Titan Quest 2 but now what? I got to go play some shitty Diablo 2 clone now that can't hold a candle to Titan Quest? This is just awful awful news...

That's sad. I never played Titan Quest but from what I saw and heard it was pretty good fun. May hafta pick it up some time when I have the chance.

HAHA, eat shit. That's what you get for trying to slap horribly obsolete gameplay into your shitty game which is already boring enough in an MMO, let alone a single player game. This is great news.

They did deliver on a re-release of Dawn of War with an expansion pack, Soulstorm. It's set to come out next week, March 5, still PC-only.

I don't think WoW's success would impede Diablo 3 getting made at all, it didn't stop Starcraft 2. Blizzard just keeps games on the DL until they are ready to talk about them. Once SC2 and the next wow expansion come out I wouldn't be surprised if Diablo 3 was announced.

Also, for those hankering for a new Diablo fix, everyone is saying that Too Human isn't so much a Devil May Cry game as it is a Diablo game for consoles.

Umm Sacred 2 is still scheduled to release this year last I checked. The only thing I preferred about Diablo 2 over the first Sacred was the skill system and random map generation, although sometimes I prefer the premade map anyway...

Well, there's always Sacred, the sequel to which should be coming relatively soon.

As dtomek already mentioned, I see. Cool.

And I'm currently playing an old game called Divine Divinity, which I'd somehow never even heard of until a couple of weeks ago, which so far seems to be an awesome mix of Diablo, Baldur's Gate, and Ultima 7. I hear they're making a sequel to this one. Or another sequel, rather, considering there was also Beyond Divinity, which I haven't played yet but bought on the cheap at the same time I got the first game.

There's an indie game that sort of similar to the Diablo hack-n-slash model called Depths of Peril.

Granted, it's not 100% polished, but it does something /different/ with the formula for a change. There's a demo; give it a try. It could surprise and delight. I was.

On the topic of Titan Quest, it was an alright hack-n-slash. It was just too middle of the road. It was nice while it lasted, but I don't have any sudden urges to reinstall it and give it another go a year later like Diablo 2 or Sacred.

Mr. Obama, I'd like you to know i logged in specifically to add you to my friends list.

Also, i never heard of Sacred 2 until about 8 hours ago and it's funny to see people mention it right away....as if i was destined to discover it eventually. Maybe that's looking to deeply. Anyway, it looks sweet.

Why would they never make Diablo 3 just because of WoW's success? They're making a sequel to Starcraft, are they not? And Starcraft is the WoW of the RTS genre.

I suggest D2 fans check out Hellgate London if they haven't already. Everybody knows Flagship studios is made up of ex Blizzard employees and it shows in HGL. It's been patched a few times and now is a great time to jump in.

While I'm not happy that another game developer has gone under, I am happy that Titan Quest will not see more itterations.
It had good enough gameplay to keep me occupied while I played it but if they're going to do an epic battle of the Gods they could at least do some research on the myths and legends that spawned the heroes that they mention in the game.

It's a shame, it really is. I really enjoyed this game and the expansion. I just wish that more people had gotten into it during it's prime. It really is a well crafted game.

@Matchstickman - That's a poor reason, honestly. I guess you like God of War plenty (like most of the world) since I don't see you up in their threads cursing the developers for taking liberties with the Gods in that game :P

I am daily sad that there isn't a current gen Diablo. This is due in no small part to the fact that my friends decide we should play D2 again, about once every 4 or 5 months. And it's still fun when you've got six dudes on six laptops in the living room, but it hurts me to look at it.

Whoa, Diablo 3 is coming out. You obviously don't know anything about Blizzard aside from WOW and SC2. They have 3 main series. Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo. The way they do things is work on one game at a time. WOW isn't going to last forever. We'll probably not see a new Diablo until 201x. Starcraft took 10 years too. Diablo 2's last expansion was out not that long ago, 7 years I think. They've been dropping hints at a D3 for a while.

I think she means that due to WoW's massive success, Blizzard might take the Diablo universe and turn it into a similar MMORPG, away from what the series really is.

Does anyone else think Titan Quest would have been great as an Xbox 360 port? Forget Diablo, where the heck are the Baldur's Gate DArk Alliance and Champions of Norrath clones?
