Tired of GameStop? Amazon now offers release date delivery for select games photo

"Would you like to pre-order Rock Band 2? No? Then how about reserving Gears of War 2? It's going to be INTENSE! Well then, perhaps I can interest you in the Edge Card? It comes with a free subscription to Game Informer and ..."

I try to limit my visits to GameStop for obvious reasons these days, so this bit o' news about Amazon offering up "release-date delivery" for $5.98 is intriguing. Even better is the fact that Amazon Prime members can get this shipping upgrade for free.

Unfortunately, this relatively new shipping option isn't available for all upcoming releases, but games like Fable 2, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed are among the titles to get the special treatment.

As far as I know, this is the cheapest method of getting games on day one without leaving the house. In fact, I'm actually considering subscribing to Amazon Prime now.

I am completely surprised you Americans haven't had this service yet?

Over in the UK Play.com and shopto.net get our games to us on the release date, if not before release!

Certainly with a copy of football manager I ordered last year I got it a week early!

Oh and may I add, both sites delivery charges are completely free, and they both are usually cheaper than amazon on price for the game anyway.

I used to have amazon prime free for a promotion and it was awsome. I may consider paying for it now that you get the games on the release day. Amazon prime was a godsend, this now makes it 1337 to say the least.

@MrSadistic This isn't one-day shipping (which will get it to you the next day), this is actual day-of-release on-your-doorstep shipping.

I've had Amazon Prime for over a year now, haven't been to a Gamestop in about that period of time, and figure this is even more reason to not go into Would You Like To Reserve Something-er, Gamestop..

Not to sound like a viral marketing bot or anything, but Amazon Prime really is a good deal. You'll get a lot of exclusive discounts on stuff and two-day shipping on just about everything you can imagine for free with overnight being a cheap upgrade. If you do a lot of shopping at Amazon, picking up a Prime account is an investment. If they've still got the free trial thing running, you can get three months of it for free.

I remember that I got Halo 2 on the release date. I think they stopped doing that because of all the street date breakage.

I've been a subscriber to Amazon Prime since it first began and it's been the greatest thing in terms of shipping when buying on-line. If I can get the games delivered on the day of its release for no cost on the upgrade then I'll never see the inside of a Gamestop ever again.

Amazon sucks. I cancelled my Amazon Prime subscription after they send a package by 3-day Select for the FOURTH time when it was supposed to be 2nd Day shipping. Complain about it? Sure, but what are they gonna do, give me a refund on my "free" 2-day shipping?

I keep my Amazon business to an absolute bare minimum now.

Aside from GameStop leeching developer revenue on (overpriced) used game sales, what's so bad about the place? Is it really that bad to be asked about a preorder or two at the checkout? It sounds like some people here could use a little more human contact.

Hmm. I've heard nothing but horror stories about Amazon and games. People claim that they wouldn't get their games for weeks (even with a pre-order on a popular title). Has this been alleviated? I've read too many instances of this for me to just jump-in to Amazon.
Hell, I've seen comments on here that read "Great, you guys got the game already? Well I ordered from Amazon and it's going to be at least a week because they said my pre-order couldn't be filled" on Dtoid. Now, I've ordered everything under the sun from Amazon and have not had any problems yet, but I son't fuck around with getting my games on release day. Can anyone confirm or deny any of this?

I actually prefer Gamestop to Amazon. Amazon takes forever to ship orders; the Gamestop I go to has a crew that's cool and they never hassle me to pre-order or buy warranties or anything. They even hook me up with extra promos when that happens. I didn't pre-order Disgaea 3 but I'm getting the soundtrack anyway since they had extras.

I don't have a problem with my gamestop. I've made it clear that I'm well above the average uninformed customer and know my shit, so they leave me alone with all the preorder nonsense. But this is a good idea for when I'm at school or something and it actually costs money for me to get on the train and go downtown to gamestop. The shipping/train cost is about equal. I just hope they expand it to most games.

Nah. It's called "saving-my-gas-instead-of-running-around-trying-to-find-a-game-on-release-day", plus Amazon doesn't charge sales tax in most areas. You should probably do a little research before condemn an entire nation. BTW, AMERICA!!! FUCK YEAH!!! ;)
Amazon Prime is well-worth the cost.

Not a bad option. When I pre-ordered from Gamestop and chose next day shipping, $10.98 usually, I'd get it day of release because they shipped it the night before. But this option isn't bad.

Considering how much stuff I bought from Amazon just in the last 6 months, (and paying average shipping of 3-4 dollars) I realized that it is much more convenient and cheaper to pay the Prime fee and get unlimited 2 day shipping and really cheap next day. I have had it for a month now and I can say no problems at all have been encountered. Also, I got GTAIV on the day of release.
