I'm 32, and I still like love Pokémon. I've been to a ton of Pokémon events, and at each one, a parent of a young Poké-fan has approached me with something along the lines of "Jesus, mister, you're still playing with them Pokemans? Goddamn, I hope my kid don't turn out weird like you," or, "Where's your handler? Do you got a MR-M bracelet on you somewhere?" implying that I must be a developmentally disabled adult who's escaped from his cage.
Avoiding conversations like that is just one of the reasons I think I'm going to hire one of my friend's kids to go to Toys 'R' Us to fetch these event Pokémon for me. Being treated like a child molester or a mildly retarded man is a super-effective way to get me to start hating myself.

The sad part is, this is just now coming out, mere...er...months/weeks? before Platinum comes out. You very well could have gotten hacked ones off of GTS if you so chose (or done it yourself, easily enough), and what are the chances of a Toys 'R Us near you actually doing this?
I've never gone to one of these events before, you can tell. Maxing the 'dex was never a high priority in my Pokelife.
seriously...TRUs around here are far and wide...and the days I came for Darkrai were rather empty. so no worries here. being 21, I could care less what some kid's probably uninformed parent thinks of me. But then again, I could easily pass as a 15 year old black kid still.

....I mean it can. But the overall gameplay still sucks me in. It's these crappy new pokemon designs after Gold/Silver that's annoying me.
They're most likely older than you, so they'll almost certainly die before you do! So you win!
As for Shaymin, I'm less interested, but I'll still download it.

Another thing I don't get is, I seem to remember that it is possible for Nintendo to do these events online, like...you know, you could get on GTS and do the trade wirelessly. Or maybe I'm confusing it with the gift items to get access to the legendaries so you catch them yourself. Either way.
There is a marked interest in these events, and a very scant percentage of those people are able to come to the events. More people have some form of access to wireless internet than ability to travel to where these take place.
Why not have them all just occur online? I would've had this in D/P from the start given how there was already online content to begin with. Sure, that may alienate another group of people, but can't they just walk into Starbucks or McDonald's?
Seriously though wtf is with the last generation of pokemon? First 150 were all cool except that spindly freak Mr. Mime, second were pretty good with a few exceptions... but now they don't even look like animals any more!
The most memorable stuff happened while sitting in line for hours at an event to download a Celebi onto one of the Pokemon GBA games.
The kid behind me in line smelled like phlegm. When you smelled him (which happened whenever you inhaled through your nose), it smelled like the smell you get when you have a cold, and you accidentally sniff some of your own snot too far up your nose.
Not to be judgmental (and because none of my friends at the time played videogames, let alone Pokemon), I asked him if he wanted to do some trading. When he turned his game on to fetch a Pokemon for me, he sang the game's theme song at the top of his lungs. I don't mean in an operatic way, I mean a screaming at the top of his lungs, "Enter Sandman" sort of way.
Then he ragged on me because I needed to trade, which meant I hadn't bought Pokemon Fire Red, Leaf Green, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. He said that my inability to purchase every available Pokemon game must mean that I'm poor, and that since poor people are genetically inferior to rich people, that I should die in order to further the proper evolution of the species.
We didn't talk much after that.
But I'll always remember him.
I really want to like it more.
What I hate is that ever since my town's Toys R Us closed is when all of the cool Pokemon events started happening =[

And can't you just use an Action Replay or something to get event Pokemon. I haven't played my Pearl version in over a year, but I'm pretty sure I got all the event Pokemon with an AR the first week I owned the game.

and yes, you can get a Regigigas already, but only if you transferred Regirock, Regice, and Registeel up from ruby, sapphire, or emerald (otherwise the dungeon that has Regigigas wont open) allegedly, having a regigigas in Platinum (perhaps specifically this one?) acts as a key to a new dungeon that allows you to catch Regirock, Regice, and Registeel.
