TIME names top ten games of 2007 photo

This list ought to cause some waves in the internets. TIME has complied their top ten games of the year, in numerical order, which will certainly but subject to a great deal of disagreement, flame war and general crap slinging. Esteemed publication or not, calling Halo 3 the best game of the year is sure to win some major ire, especially from fans who favor more unique offerings.

Well, enough speculation on the possible fury of the masses. Here's the list:

1. Halo 3
2. The Orange Box
3. Rock Band
4. Super Mario Galaxy
5. BioShock
6. Call of Duty 4
7. Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
8. Mass Effect
9. Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
10. God of War 2

I can't disagree with too much on there, with the exception of the two titles on the list I haven't played, but I can say if the list in indeed in order of quality, BioShock resting at number 5 is a damnable sin.

BioShock was the best game this year, period.

Though I haven't played SMG yet...

Well, I can understand some of their reasoning.

Halo3 did have both a strong campaign and multiplayer so that might be their logic.

Bioshock is an amazing game, much better then a 5 but hard for me to argue 2 or better.

Personally Orange Box should have been 1.

Surprisingly the VGA's had it right this year. Stay away from games Time Magazine, bunch of fucking old men trying to tell me what games were the best of the year then get it so so so wrong.

Halo 3 is ass

@ Cannibal - See, but that's thing thing. I'm not hating on Halo at ALL - but it's all a matter of personal opinion and how the titles affected you, you know? BioShock blew me away, but for most peeps it was Orange Box.

Your icon is awesome, btw :)

Bioshock hands down is number 1..... Followed by COD4, Orange Box then Halo 3. This is just the opinion of outsiders who don't know anything about gaming.

my personal list <from what i played>
1.orange drank..er, box
2. SMG, the first real mario game since mario 64
3. Halo 3

I haven't played any of the others, so its an easy top 3 for me!
I definitely think they picked the right 10 games, the order is debatable, but all 10 belong here.

Not bad, considering I wasn't even aware Time covered gaming at all. With all the press and attention Halo 3's launch got, it's no surprise the uninitiated's attention would be caught.

I do agree, while I personally love the Halo series, I don't think it was the best game this year. Other than that, the thing that really baffles me is number nine. How did Ace Combat get on there?

The most out of place game on that list is EASILY Ace Combat 6.

You might also be insterested to know that Ace Combat 6 doesn't even crack the top 100 (score-wise) of 2007 on gamerankings.com.

All of the other ones seem legitimate. Or at least, I could see a legitmate argument for saying that any of those other 9 games belong on a top games of the year list. Maybe not top 10, but they're all enjoyable to an extent.

PS: Phantom Hourglass wouldn't be ANYWHERE near top 10 for me. It was probably the least fun I've ever had with a zelda game (save LoZ2 for NES). Too gimmicky, too hold-your-hand easy, and overall, WAY too boring. The ONLY part I really thought was fun was the few "hidden" (read: "not on the map") islands and their somewhat interesting puzzles.

This year was a good year for gaming indeed, especially for 360 owners. I agree with this list for the most part, COD 4 shoulda been a lil higher but it don't matter too much to me. But where is Assassins Creed? That is by far the best single player game of the year!

1. The Orange Box
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Bioshock
4. Mass Effect
5. COD4

Ace Combat 6? They're on crack. This is one of the best years EVER for gaming, and they include THAT on the list?

Since others are doing it, here's my top ten:

1. BioShock
2. The Orange Box
3. Super Mario Galaxy
4. Assassin's Creed
5. God of War 2
6. Mass Effect
7. Crackdown
8. Catan
9. Contra 4
10. Crush (which ties with Zack and Wiki for the Psychonauts Memorial Award for best game nobody played)

I, like everyone one else has to disagree with that list.
Trouble is most people's opinions are going to be different on every kind of list ever compiled.
For example, I really liked STALKER: Shadow Of Chernobyl but that isn't on the list.
IDEA: Get rid of these lists!

I just that when a major weekly magazine like time has any kind of top 10 of the year list, they're probably not basing their decisions on what the best or highest quality thing is. More likely, they're making the list based on impact and perception from the public eye.

So, in this case, was Halo 3 the biggest, most advertised, publicly anticipated game? I think an argument could be made that it was.
Sharpless's Avatar

That's both an incredibly obvious list and an incredibly sound list, generally speaking. I'm not really concerned with placement. The list itself is trivial, to begin with. Personally, I'd put The Orange Box at the top.

Whatevah. Lists are just masturbation anyway.
