Time keeps on slipping into the future: id says no Rage this year photo

What is Rage, exactly? "It's not MotorStorm, it's not Fallout either," says id CEO Todd Hollenshead during an episode of GameTrailers TV. It's hinted that the game isn't open-world per se, but the environments aka "wastelands" are vast in comparison to Doom 3, and the "traditional id style FPS action" is present through combat-focused "instances."

I can't speak for the rest of you, but that quick-and-dirty description has got me fairly excited. Unfortunately, Rage won't be released this year, so now I've been forced into the fetal position while weeping heavily.

Apparently, it will be out on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Mac "when it's fun and when it's done" (re: most likely before 2011), which is at least a little comforting.

Aw. Wish we knew more! Wish this game was farther along with its development... but whatever. This sounds pretty awesome and I love ID.

The design in of this game looks fucking sick!

I've been thinking a lot about graphics and such this last week with Killzone upon us. While Killzone has incredible looks, the textures really are terrible at times. It's the lighting and effects that sell the game, in my opinion. Rage seems to have all that good effect work, plus the texture work of Gears. Visually at least, the game looks mind blowing.

Apples to oranges, of course all three games look about as good as you can expect any game to until the next gen..

Its not just the looks though, the concept is awesome and if they can make the gameplay solid its going to be a massive title. Sooner rather than later would be nice but I'm happy to wait till its done!

The concept is what's got me most pumped. It reminds me of Mad Max in a way, and The Road Warrior is my favorite movie ever.

"open world"? Does he mean sandboxish? A huge level that acts like a hub center? Or just a big level?

@yggogre and Jon2309 - I thought so too, but it's been cleared up via Twitter. He did in fact say it won't be out this year.
