It appears as if the legal spat between Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio didn’t spill into Double Fine Production’s Brütal Legend. In response to the news of Dio’s voice being stripped from the game, president of Double Fine Tim Schafer issued a statement citing the addition of Tim Curry’s pipes as a creative move.
"Ronnie James Dio is an amazing singer and truly one of the great figures of Metal,” Schafer said, “but as the character of Doviculus evolved, we realized that Tim Curry was a better fit for the part. Anyone who has seen his amazing performance as the Lord of Darkness in the movie Legend knows why we cast him in the role of Doviculus, Emperor of the Tainted Coil."
Our initial report of Dio’s removal from Brütal Legend was laced with legal speculation: the guys at SpineLanguage believed it had something to do with Osbourne suing for the rights to the Black Sabbath name. Dio is the current front man for the ancient group, thus it was assumed there might have been a problem with the two men appearing in the same game.
While not having Dio seems to take the "metal" down a few levels, we're happy to report the opposite. Brütal Legend now has a voice actor who once played a viscious, shape-shifting clown in a television series. Metal indeed.
We all float down here, Georgie. We all float.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
It's just a shame that they couldn't keep him on for something. I wonder, had he already began his voice work, or did Curry replace him before any dialogue was recorded?
All I can think of when I hear Dio in my head is:
"I hear you brave young Jables are you hungry for the ROCK?!"
Well, not THE God... but close enough...
Oh, screw this.
He is THE GOD.
Double Fine can fuck right off for this.
Just because Ozzy's camp has more pull shows who DF serves: the dollar.
Poseur punk-asses.
And about Ozzy? Ozzy was, is and always will be awesome. He is so awesome, he makes awesomeness looks not as awesome. We're not gonna say anymore lest you are overwhelmed with awesomeness.
Definitely. Of the top of my head, I can only think of one character he's voiced that wasn't a villain. I could care less about legal catfights between musicians, I just want to play this game and hear Time Curry in it. :D
Dammit, it's too early for me to be typing, apparently >.<
How exactly is Tim Schafer's reputation being burned? Last time I checked, it wasn't his job to get caught up in metal diva bullshit. In the end he makes a better VO decision and we still get Halford, Kilmister, Ozzy, Ford, Black, and Curry.
Dio's involved with the project since 2007, then Ozzy gets announced at #3 2009. A week later Dio is gone. Still smells fishy to me...
