Tim Schafer says Curry 'was a better fit' for Doviculus photo

It appears as if the legal spat between Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio didn’t spill into Double Fine Production’s Brütal Legend. In response to the news of Dio’s voice being stripped from the game, president of Double Fine Tim Schafer issued a statement citing the addition of Tim Curry’s pipes as a creative move.

"Ronnie James Dio is an amazing singer and truly one of the great figures of Metal,” Schafer said, “but as the character of Doviculus evolved, we realized that Tim Curry was a better fit for the part. Anyone who has seen his amazing performance as the Lord of Darkness in the movie Legend knows why we cast him in the role of Doviculus, Emperor of the Tainted Coil."

Our initial report of Dio’s removal from Brütal Legend was laced with legal speculation: the guys at SpineLanguage believed it had something to do with Osbourne suing for the rights to the Black Sabbath name. Dio is the current front man for the ancient group, thus it was assumed there might have been a problem with the two men appearing in the same game.

While not having Dio seems to take the "metal" down a few levels, we're happy to report the opposite. Brütal Legend now has a voice actor who once played a viscious, shape-shifting clown in a television series. Metal indeed.

We all float down here, Georgie. We all float.

I've got to respect them ultimately deciding that Dio wasn't right for the VO job. I mean, this is the primary villain we're talking about here. As cool as it would have been to have had Dio involved, he probably wouldn't have made for a threatening adversary. Unless he sang all of his dialogue. Which would have been awesome.

It's just a shame that they couldn't keep him on for something. I wonder, had he already began his voice work, or did Curry replace him before any dialogue was recorded?

Curry is the man. I rank him a half Bill Murray.

I wholeheartedly approve of anything Tim Curry. Especially if it's reminiscent of Tim Curry in Legend.

Lord of Darkness; the evil scientist in Gargoyles; Hexxus; Skullmaster. Tim Curry was born to voice evil characters. I can't wait.

All I can think of when I hear Dio in my head is:
"I hear you brave young Jables are you hungry for the ROCK?!"

They ought to hire Dio to do some "ballad-ish song narration" then or else he could play the shadowy inner force who guides Doviculus to his infamy. After all they hired Tim Curry because he played "Darkness" in Legend and he had his evil old dad in the shadows.

Tim Schafer was one of the few people in this industry who had a reputation, not a purely technological one like, say, Romero, but somehow a human one. And this is how he decided to burn it. A bit sad, but I'm sure the game will still rock.

Tim Curry is God.
Well, not THE God... but close enough...
Oh, screw this.
He is THE GOD.

@xenon: I'm going to regret this but did you try to compare Tim Schafer and John Romero? It doesn't work, it's like oil and water, except one is the fucking MIDNIGHT OIL and one is already evaporated as of April 14, 2000

Dio > Ozzy.

Double Fine can fuck right off for this.

Just because Ozzy's camp has more pull shows who DF serves: the dollar.

Poseur punk-asses.

To the ones calling Ozzy a poser, just re-watch the Holy Diver music video. I know that's probably too harsh a punishment, but you gotta go what you gotta do.
And about Ozzy? Ozzy was, is and always will be awesome. He is so awesome, he makes awesomeness looks not as awesome. We're not gonna say anymore lest you are overwhelmed with awesomeness.

Ozzy was awesome, indeed, and his time with Sabbath was better than Dio's, but I blame that on the music's time period. Now, their solo stuff? Dio DESTROYS Ozzy in all categories: technical ability, songwriting, and dragons.

"Curry's voice is pure genius for anything evil."

Definitely. Of the top of my head, I can only think of one character he's voiced that wasn't a villain. I could care less about legal catfights between musicians, I just want to play this game and hear Time Curry in it. :D

Dio isn't an actor, and evil roles are generally best played by theatre actors with English accents.

@Xenon

How exactly is Tim Schafer's reputation being burned? Last time I checked, it wasn't his job to get caught up in metal diva bullshit. In the end he makes a better VO decision and we still get Halford, Kilmister, Ozzy, Ford, Black, and Curry.

I think that Curry doing the voicework will be an improvement, but I still think the change is more related to not wanting to deal with Sharon's incessant nagging and/or lawsuits than anything else.

Dio's involved with the project since 2007, then Ozzy gets announced at #3 2009. A week later Dio is gone. Still smells fishy to me...
