Tim Schafer on 4v4 Multiplayer: 'split the duties' photo

Hopefully, by now, you've had the chance to take a look at Hamza's preview for the upcoming Brütal Legend. Now, while he was getting some solid hands-on time with the multiplayer, I was, uh... getting some solid, uh... one-on-one time with the man himself, Tim Schafer. To say that our discussion was awesome is an understatement. Like his games or not, that man is a very cool member of the gaming industry. Definitely look out for that full interview early next week.

In the meantime, I want to share with you some of the interesting tidbits of information I gleaned from Schafer. First of all, notice that the hands-on Hamza had was a 1v1 affair. Certainly fun, yes, but is there something more? Yes, actually: a full 4v4 battle mode. How's that play out compared to Hamza's experience?

Well, it's definitely a cooperative affair. Schafer described it by saying, "You get on team chat, and you hopefully agree amongst yourselves that, 'okay, I'll take care of maybe the resource building, you take care of harassing enemy troops.' Or maybe you all do everything at the same time. It's really up to the players to decide how to split up the duties."

From my discussion with Schafer, it looks like the larger multiplayer options for the game are going to force people to really work together. While some people work on building more troops, others are going to fly up and scout ahead, or focus on buffing and debuffing troops. People are going to like different facets of the multiplayer experience, and, like other co-op-heavy multiplayer games, people are going to have to assign roles.

Other reps from Double Fine also told me that the co-op multiplayer modes are actually a bit easier, as duties are now split, although matches can end up being very chaotic. Interestingly, Double Fine is forcing friends-only play, a conscious decision to avoid the destined-to-fail nature of random co-op.

Friends only play? Sadly I don't think I have any friends that are picking up this game. :(

That Friends-only thing is some serious BS!

Friends only? What the heck? More like they didn't want to program a decent algorithm to find other players. Looks like I'll be passing on this one's multi.

Friends only! I knew it was going to be tacked on like Overlord II's multiplayer, but this is worse.

I can dig supporting and even promoting friends-only play, but forcing it? What if none of your friends have the game? What is this, the Wii?

I really don't like that last sentence. "Double Fine is forcing friends-only play?" I'm not big on the whole friends only thing, but seeing Double Fine forcing something into their game which both doesn't really seem mandatory and could possibly break the game for me is a small downer for me.

Obviously this shows that a lot of people don't do their homework.

THE MULTI FOR BRUTAL LEGEND IS NOT JUST TACKED ON.

Jesus, is that so hard for you guys? The multiplayer was the original game, if anything the single player would be considered tacked on. It won't be of course, mind you, as it will probably be played by even me more times than the multiplayer. So stop with that will yeh Edith?

At any rate, while it seems weird that they are pigeonholeing us into playing with just friends, be honest... when was the last time you had a GOOD experience with random people in a strategy based game? None? Case in point.

Gonna fucking awesome, that is all.

The point is, what if you don't have friends who bought the game.

Also, for all we know, the original multiplayer game was shit, then they got a giant fan following and higher production values, which in turn may make for a superior single player experience.

From the way it's sounding, they should have just scrapped multiplayer all together. In my eyes, this new fad is unnecessary. Fallout 3, Bioshock, Oblivion, and every other best-selling action game ever (Dead Space, Dead Rising), are just fine on their own.

Just more of a reason to join the game community and hook up with other people on forums and such. Hell, just find other people on Dtoid who have the game and want to multiplay it.
