As if I needed another reason to be excited for Dragon Age: Origins, along comes news that Tim Curry, star of such films as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, IT and of course, Fern Gully, will be lending his unmistakable voice to BioWare's latest RPG. Effing sweet!
The game will also feature Kate Mulgrew, who sci-fi nerds will know as Captain Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager. That doesn't matter, however, because Tim Curry is in it and Tim Curry outranks all other celebrities.
"Tim Curry will play the villainous Arl Rendon Howe," states BioWare. "Howe is the calculating villain, cultured and charming, with an insatiable lust for power, who never hesitates to harm anyone who gets in his way. Kate Mulgrew will lend her vocal flair to Flemeth, a powerful witch who maintains her immortality through the darkest of means, and who plays a pivotal role in the player’s survival. Both roles provide the actors with the opportunity to bring their considerable talents to bear in their portrayal of these characters."
This is one of my more anticipated games of the year and I really can't wait to get to grips with it in November. Next week, we have a full preview of the game coming, so make sure you're reading Destructoid for that. If you love RPGs, you'd be an idiot not to keep an eye out on this one.
EDMONTON, Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Leading video game developer BioWare™, a division of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS), has secured a star-studded voiceover cast for its upcoming blockbuster game, Dragon Age™: Origins. Both roles provide the actors with the opportunity to bring their considerable talents to bear in their portrayal of these characters.
“Dragon Age: Origins has the largest cast of characters of any game BioWare has ever made,” said Mark Darrah, Executive Producer, BioWare. “By working with an incredibly talented cast of actors we are able to bring reality and depth to the characters, their back stories, motivations, and dreams that our talented writers have created for them.”
In Dragon Age: Origins, players take on the role of a Grey Warden, one of the last of an ancient order of guardians who have served as protectors throughout the centuries. Only they have the power to unite the shattered lands, defeat the Archdemon and drive back the darkspawn that threaten to destroy the world. Players will interact with many interesting characters who may join them in their quest, and they will choose whether these characters become friends, foes, or even a romantic interest. Featuring a deep and compelling story where every choice can have a dramatic impact on the game, Dragon Age: Origins is scheduled to release on November 3, 2009 in North America, for the PC and Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system and later in November for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system.
Dragon Age: Origins is rated M by the ESRB. For more information about Dragon Age: Origins, visit www.dragonage.com. Pre-order the game now at www.eastore.ea.com.
STOLEN CREDIT CARD??!
Tim Curry for fucking life.
FUCK YOU IT!
Also, to anyone crying about Pennywise, I highly recommend you look up some clips on youtube. Yeah, I used to think he was creepy too, but after seeing some of the... work... on that film in retrospect, it's hard to take it seriously.
Not to say Curry's performance wasn't awesome (he'll always be Pennywise to me), but god... that movie is awful.
The horned dude from Legend
The Butler from Clue
Pennywise the Clown
It's adult in the same way jerking off to your dad's porn mags when you're 15 is adult.
It gets tagged Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. I don't control which tags are visible, though. That's the software.
But, let me clarify anyway. Note that I said "SHAMELESSLY adult RPG". There really is something to be loved about that. I'm all for "serious mature storytelling", and look forward to its stronger presence in games in the future, but at the same time, I also think there is room for boobs and splatter. I appreciate Dragon Age putting this forward with a seemingly tongue-in-cheek attitude. The first trailer was scored to "This is the New Shit" by Marilyn Manson.
Come on. That's how they are selling the game to a wide audience. That's hilarious.
So why don't you loosen up your highwaters a bit and come down to the funzone where the rest of us are hanging out? You probably can't hear it from your podium, but there's a lot of laughter going on down here.
Come on, that is just weak. 'Adult' is not look, we have tits and gore - TITS AND GORE!!! That's just juvenile. There's not that many games which you could really say have mature narratives, but off the top off my head Planescape: Torment, The Longest Journey and Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer all have far more going for them in that department than Dragon Age.
It's a medieval Mass Effect/KOTOR with more content.
Well, if it were being ironic or tounge in cheek, I wouldn't be on my 'podium', but Bioware really seem to think their game is 'the new shit'. And I'm not saying it's going to be a bad game, but it just bewilders me that people equate adult storytelling to something that is either a) badass, or b) something they can jerk off to.
See, part of the reason I'm so amused by the marketing iis because it's Bioware.
Anyone who has played Bioware games knows that they are very focused on story and content, not exploitation. I know that. You know that. We all know that. I am excited about them being upfront with the gore/nudity, not for wank material, but because, combined with their pedigree, that puts it safely in classic "Conan The Barbarian" or "Heavy Metal" territory. And that's fine by me. A proven RPG developer doing smashmouth fantasy? I'm all for it.
But back to my main point, the marketing for this has been awesome in my opinion. It's a medieval rpg marketed around Marilyn Manson and TITSLOL for god's sake! I can't help but feel that Bioware is being completely tongue-in-cheek with this. I keep seeing people busting out the argument of "sex sells and Bioware is taking the low road", but this is the same company that got SLAMMED by Fox News for the side-boob action in Mass Effect. I can't help but see this type of marketing as a direct middle-finger to that kind of attention, and for that, I approve.
I think that it's EA pushing them to do/try new "hip" things, plain and simple.
"it safely in classic "Conan The Barbarian" or "Heavy Metal" territory."
There's merit to that!
Maybe EA is to blame, maybe not. Normally I would tend to agree with you on that, but this is Bioware. People know Bioware. You put "from the creators of KOTOR and Mass Effect" in the trailer and play it slow and somber, you'll perk up ears irregardless of boob ratio. This personality being presented in the current marketing is just a bit too "on the nose" given their recent troubles.
He was the voice of Gabriel Knight!
Honestly, I'm surprised that in a post and thread about Tim Curry and games, no one has mentioned Gabriel Knight yet. Well, until I did. Woohoo, prize for me.
I had to look that up. It being a computer game explains my ignorance. I've been a sheltered console guy for the most part.
And what?!
Or something.
Almost.
Bioware revolutionized RPGs. That's it. If you don't think so,
you don't know a damn thing about CRPGs. And if you claim NWN2
and Planescape:Torment are so vastly superior, despite both being
created using Bioware engines, then you are just... wow, I'll
stop right there.
