Tim Cain discusses his concerns with Fallout 3 and why he's pre-orderd it photo

The designer behind the original Fallout, Tim Cain, recently spoke with Edge about his feelings on the direction Bethesda has taken Fallout 3 in, as well as his concerns with Interplay's Fallout-themed MMO.

He says, "I do like what I've seen about Fallout 3," and continues, "it's not necessarily the direction I would've gone, but I can tell you I have my Fallout 3 pre-ordered. I want my life-sized Pip-Boy. I'm going to be playing that at the end of the month."

Concerning the MMO, Cain says that "the original games were designed to make you feel like you were one of the last people left on Earth" and how that fact causes him to wonder about "how they'll handle making the game not feel too crowded."

Finally, Tim reveals that he's "looking forward to Fallout 3 as a consumer, not a developer. I just want to play it and enjoy it," he explains. Can you blame the man?

[Thanks, Jonathan and Joe]

I have my survival edition pre-ordered and I'll be abusing my PC for hours on end once I get it.

I've been counting down the days for what feels like forever. I'm going to be humping my Pipboy as soon as it's in my hands.

From the one review I've read, the hardcore FO and FO 2 fans shouldn't hold their breath as the game isn't as "humorous" or "dark" as the first two games. I'm still buying this game though. Can't wait.

Well I found it on the GT forums. One French site said the game was good, and gave it a 93%. A Sweedish gaming magazine gave it an 80-ish. That's when the fanboys got butt hurt and starting bitching saying they were canceling pre-orders because it's not the same old Fallout it was.

Man, that's got to be a very interesting position to be in, the orginator of a franchise, now being done by someone completely removed from that person. It cool that he's interested though. But its so weird. Kinda like Quinten Tarantino lining up for Mc G's Kill Bill 3 or something

why is no one talking about how bad the enemy ai seems to be in this game? in every demo\diary i've seen, the enemy ai tend to stand around waiting to be shot or eaten by giant scorpions or what have you - no attempts to take cover - heads seem to be looking the wrong way, etc.

how many great games have been ruined by bad enemy ai? why do the previewers tend to leave that bit of info out until the review? the game is looking beautiful - but the ai...

anyone else feeling me on this one? (take another look at some of the media files).

From what I've seen, I think Fallout 3 is doing a great job of getting the feeling of nuclear fallout across. The second I saw that gameplay video of tenpenny tower in the middle of no where sold the game for me.

I loved Fallout 1 and 2. I have so many reservations for this game. I hope it is a good game. I am stuck trying to figure out which system to preorder for.

I just hope their isn't a huge delay in the PC modding tools after it sees release. A Bethseda game without a PC mod community = FAIL. I'd like to be wrong and just enjoy the vanilla release, but I doubt I am considering their track record.

At least It won't look like the low res 720p crap that all the other ports like oblvion/bioshock/call of duty 4/ whatever was on consoles

no 8xAA and 16 AF, the console ports look and play like ass I will wait for it.

besides it takes longer to program render paths for all the PC's gpus on the market.

and the collectors edtion was a hell of a lot cheeper to pre oder on PC.

and realy tons of games make you download the DEV kits somewhere else at a later date and always have what is the big deal? there isn't any.
