Thule Trail pays homage to Oregon Trail in style photo

If someone says "You have died of dysentery" to you and you laugh uproariously, you know exactly the significance that Oregon Trail holds in the annals of gaming's past. If not, it may have been before your time -- and therefore it is my duty to educate you in the ways of this iconic classic. Wikipedia has a fine summary of the title, which was highly memorable due to its random events and made quite an impact back in 1985 for PC gamers.

Now that you're up to speed, I introduce Thule Trail for your pleasure, which places you in one of three cars on their way to the Atlantis Music Festival in California. Our own NihonTiger90 played through it with editors Chad, Tiff, Ron and Niero in tow, and as you can imagine the results were hilarious. Check it out on his community blog.

Since it's all browser based, you have no excuse not play through while you're at the day job pretending to work. At least they won't catch you reading Destructoid again.

Hah, my boss was totally like, “We’re not paying you to surf the internet,” when I was extending my lunch break by reading Destructoid the other day.

By the way, Colette, it’s “annals,” not “annuls”. The latter is the third-person singular form of the verb “annul” (as in, a marriage). Just thought you might like to know.

I remember playing Oregon Trail on the school computers during Math class in Junior High. I loved that class just for the fact that they had computers with the Oregon Trail installed. It's always fun to watch your family members slowly die of diseases while you just sit and laugh and high-five God.

Oregon Trail and that game where you play a slowly growing fish that eats other fish were my two favorite games on my 4th and 5th grade class computers. Too bad I always seemed to kill the other people in my wagon train while shooting at buffalo.

Also, Oregon Trail II(and its less fun, harder, but still-not-bad-when-you’re-a-kid South American counterpart, Amazon Trail) were awesome back in the day. I’m pretty sure every mid-90s elementary school that had computers had one of those two games, and once my family finally got a PC at home (summer 1998), we downloaded those games on there, too. For all you fans of the game, check out the numerous facebook groups about it. One of my favorite parts of the game was hunting, and it always seemed to be cholera that got me in the end (dysentery usually befell my fellow travelers).

Hm...there should be a space after “Oregon Trail II” in my last comment. Also, for those of you who spent their childhoods in the 90s, like I did, check out this facebook group (nearly 1.5 million members) for some fond memories of days gone by, such as:

“How rude!”
“I’ve fallen...and I can’t get up!”

Of course, this also applies if you were alive in the 90s...seriously, the nostalgia factor is off the charts with this one.
