Three new DLC packs revealed for Valkyria Chronicles photo

We knew DLC was coming for Valkyria Chronicles way back in November of last year, but there's hardly been a peep about it since then. I'm a big fan of the game, so I was thrilled to see the news on CVG today that Sega has finally announced details for three new DLC packs coming this spring. Here are the details:

  • Hard EX Mode - fight your way once more through the entire Imperial army, where the enemies are more lethal and your main tank Edelweiss is unavailable. You'll have to be more strategic in order to overcome your opponents.

  • Edy's Mission "Enter the Edy Detachment" - six members have been separated from Squad 7 and on their journey to reunite with the squad, they stumble upon a tiny village under attack by the Imperial Army. Play as Edy and command your outnumbered team to defend the small village from annihilation.
  • Selvaria's Mission "Behind Her Blue Flame" - this mission takes place right after the outbreak of Gallian battle lines and you play as Johann, a young and meek engineer, assigned to Selvaria's troop. See the action as it unfolds behind enemy lines and see the war play out through the eyes of the enemy.

I'm squeaking in my chair reading them! I can't wait for a good excuse to give this game more of my time, and this seems like just what I needed. Gonna pick any of these up when they come our way?
SEGA RELEASES DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT FOR VALKYRIA CHRONICLES

Visually Stunning Role-Playing Game Releases Three New Exciting Downloadable Packs

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (March 16, 2009) – SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced downloadable content for Valkyria Chronicles™ , the critically acclaimed role playing game featured exclusively on the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. Valkyria Chronicles combines strategy elements of conventional tactical role playing games with real-time action sequences. The additional content allows players to immerse themselves once more in the beautiful 3D environments. Visually breathtaking graphics and an epic storyline blend well together for an astounding and satisfying gameplay experience.

The three new packs include Hard EX Mode, Edy’s Mission “Enter the Edy Detachment”, and Selvaria’s Mission “Behind Her Blue Flame”. Each new offering provides players with a brand new experience that will keep gamers wanting more.

Details on the new downloadable content:

·        Hard EX Mode – fight your way once again through the entire Imperial army, where the enemies are more lethal and your main tank Edelweiss is unavailable. You’ll have to be more strategic in order to overcome your opponents.

 ·        Edy’s Mission “Enter the Edy Detachment” – six members have been separated from Squad 7 and on their journey to reunite with their squad, they stumble upon a tiny village under attack by the Imperial Army. Play as Edy and command your outnumbered team to defend the small village from annihilation.
·        Selvaria’s Mission “Behind Her Blue Flame”– Taking place right after the outbreak of Gallian battle lines, you play as Johann, a young and meek engineer assigned to Selvaria’s troop. See the action as it unfolds behind enemy lines and see the war play out through the eyes of the enemy.

Valkyria Chronicles is set in a fictitious continent reminiscent of 1930s Europe which has been divided in two and ruled by the Empire and the Federation. The Empire has set its sights on invading a small neutral country called Gallia, which is situated in the middle of the two great empires. The game follows a hero named Welkin and his fellow soldiers of Gallian civilian militia’s 7th Platoon. They fight against the Empire, who are intent on unifying the continent under its power. Gallia discovers that the Empire possesses a secret weapon, known as the “Valkyria”- an ancient race with special powers thought to exist only in legends. With this new discovery, the fate of Gallia’s ability to win the war and a hope for a better future hangs in the balance.

Valkyria Chronicles downloadable content will be available for the PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system in spring 2009. One of the few DLCs that I'll get willingly.

Definitely. I probably won't be picking up Hard EX mode, but any extra missions or plot details are welcome.

But as I'm aware of it, the DLC was free in Japan. Can anyone confirm this?

Nice, I didn't know they were even doing this. Having beat the game last week, its perfect timing for me almost. I wonder how many they'll end up making? A lot I hope. There were a lot of characters who never got face time in any cut scenes I would have liked to see more of.

Hopefully we'll be treated to more references insinuating that Americans are cowards for using Nuclear weapons in the Second World War.

This is fantastic news. I just started up the game a few days ago but I'm already itching for some delicious DLC. I probably won't get the Hard mode pack because I'm shit at the game, but more missions is always fantastic. Hell, I think I might even pay for it if it comes down to that, which is really unusual for me when it comes to DLC.

I really, really, really wanted to like this game more than I do. It's just that the grinding through the skirmishes and just the sheer amount of time each game takes really killed it for me. I might be giving it another chance before I send it back, but I dont know

Definitely don't need the Hard EX mode, but the others sound awesome. I'm sure they won't be free though.

@Tdiddy - I would recommend completely ignoring the skirmishes. Why play levels that you've already played unless you're a glutton for repetition. I was able to complete them game without doing any but the first two skirmishes. I didn't need the Exp or the money from them to be successful.

I wish the skirmishes were randomly generated enemy encounters with varying start points. As they are, ya, avoid em if you can. The main game story missions aren't that hard if you have the patience to save/load in mission.

Hard mode? It's already hard enough as it is for me lol. I somehow managed to get through the first few levels (with low rankings of course) but I've been stuck at the tank level for like forever because Selvaria's a cheap bitch who can almost 1 hit kill from across the map :( Well that and I probably just suck at strategy games... I think it's probably a combination of both.

I think the hard ex mode might be one of the best additions actually. I loved this game, but my problem was I got addicted to trying for the best rank possible, which on most missions means buffing up your best Scout (Alicia) with Defend, Caution, and Awaken Potential, orders to the point where she's almost invincible, and then beating the whole level in 1 or 2 turns. With the Tank gone, that means no orders (unless they decide to leave those in unlike the tank-less missions in the regular mode). That might help encourage more normal strategies like positioning units defensively, and making more use of your less mobile troops. It's fun to play missions like that, but I'm too ocd to just do it for fun and ignore the C-Rank you get for taking more turns to win.

Really hope they make VC2 after this. Maybe something about EW1?

I'm definitely picking up the 2 new missions, and I'll probably pick up hard mode if it's the right price.

I have to change my pants. I've been following the VC twitter, and they've been hinting at this for a couple weeks now, so I'm THRILLED!!!!

I'm on my second playthrough, and can't wait to start AGAIN on Hard EX mode.
Any word on if this means extra-hard skirmishes will be part of the Hard EX mode?

When I get my PS3, this is definitely within the top of my must get list. The fact that they're adding DLC to the deal, just sweetens it more, pushing my "TOTALLY-EFFING-WANT-NOW!" button further.

I've been really looking forward to these ever since they came out in Japan but I still don't fully understand why Edy is so goddamn popular there. Those Japanese and their crazy tastes...

I'm in for all 3. I hated the Edelweiss so removing it is very tempting to me. I love Valkyria Chronicles.

@Kyousuke: SEGA needs to cut their losses and divert their funds towards better selling games.

For instance, Sonic and the Mother Goose. In that game, Sonic turns into a blind mouse. Look forward to it, because SEGA's printing lots of copies :D

How the FUCK is the "Hard EX Mode" any different from what was released for Mega Man 9? The same Mega Man 9 DLC that was even bashed in another article that was posted today. Yet here you are (some of you) excitedly awaiting it's release. Don't get me wrong, I love new additions to a great game just as much as any other person. But when I'm charged for an extra difficulty...just wow...Unless, "Hard EX Mode" is free...In that case, carry on and enjoy your more difficult game :]

Hells yes. One of the best PS3 games out yet, and definitely the most under-appreciated. I will be picking these up on day one... at least, the extra missions. Maybe the difficulty if it's only a couple bucks.

I loved Valkyria Chronicles, and I knew I would eventually play through it again, if only because it has New Game Plus mode. As far as the DLC goes, it does sound interesting, but purchasing them will all depend on how much they cost.

@ Pacopaco: I think they like her because she has that cute japanese girl look. I'm not a fan, but I think it's pretty obvious why they like her.

It'd be cool if they continued making missions for different individual characters!

As for removing the tank, if it lets me assign another ground unit, I'll be happy. I often found myself wishing I could play with another lancer or sniper instead of a tank.

I'm sorry to say I have yet to complete the main game yet :(

But with a mission, custscenes, skirmish, unlockables, training, administration in each chapter (which takes between 45-90 mins), I'm taking my time :|

The DLC sounds good, and I know it's already worth it. It's odd that the only DLC I've seen as good value for money has been for JRPGs on the PS3 (the other one being Folklore). Hopefully with the Silvaria's Mission they're setting it up to give us a 2 player vs mode :)
