THQ rumored to be closing Japanese office photo

California based videogame publisher THQ is reportedly ceasing its publishing outpost in Japan, amid financial issues and sagging stocks. The company is currently undergoing a restructuring to avoid being delisted by NASDQ, and this might be the beginning of some major cost savings measures being implemented. The other Asian office in Shanghai, China is expected to remain in operation, but will be scaled back to some degree.

It's not clear how this might effect scheduled releases like Darksiders 2 and UFC Undisputed 3, and where they were at in the process. The company was planning to self publish the titles in Japan, but since THQ has often opted to publish their games though other companies like Konami and YUKE'S they may have alternative agreements lined up. THQ has never been a huge player in Japan outside of the Saints Row series, but it's a shame to see the economy take its toll in this way. I blame you uDraw!

Don't blame UDraw for a shortsighted, narrow-minded company. They are resorting to nickle and diming their fans to scrape by. Not interested in their future. Maybe in fifteen years or so they can pull an EA and redeem themselves. Until then, they can rot.

I really hope THQ can bounce back from this. They produce a lot of stuff I really like. :(

@Ramminchuck: Not wanting to be nitpicking here, but what exactly do they produce? There are some pretty cool dev's who have THQ as a publisher though, so it would be shit if they'd go belly-up.

I didn't know they even had a footprint in Japan.

Those pricey patches will tear a company apart $40,000 at a time, won't they?

What effect will this THQ downsizing have on the content of games that they publish if any?

Will the shrinkage affect the Penetrator in the next Saint's Row game (and the accompanying merchandise)? That would be down right obscene!

Been saying it for weeks now THQ's got way more problems then just putting all their eggs into the uDraw basket. It was a matter of time before it all caught up to them, even if its a bit sad that it did.

Also, I doubt this will mean much for Darksiders 2 -THQ's making it pretty clear this games important to them, even if it appears -again- that they're putting all their eggs into another basket.

Don't give a shit. I hope they go out of business along with other shit companies like EA (I admit it's not likely).
