Strategy games and the Nintendo DS are a match made in heaven. Why we don't see more of this type of game on the insanely popular handheld is beyond me. So when THQ announced Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command for the DS and PSP earlier today, I was happy to say the least.

Unfortunately, Squad Command will not be a real-time strategy game like Dawn of War was. Instead, it's going to be a turn-based game. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers, right? If that little factoid isn't a complete turn off for you, here are some game details:

•Compelling single player game consisting of 13 unique missions
•9 unique multiplayer maps for Local or Global games, with small, medium and large map variants to cater for games from 2 to 8 players
•Fully destructible, real time 3D battlefields mean that no two games will be the same
•Pick from two Space Marine chapters or two Chaos Space Marine Legions to play as in Multiplayer games, in battles between Imperium vs. Imperium, Forces of Chaos vs. Forces of Chaos, or Imperium vs. Forces of Chaos
•Over 20 ranged and close combat weapons taken directly from the Warhammer 40,000 universe, including the Bolter, Plasma Gun, Chainsword and Power Fist

While it's no Starcraft, Squad Command actually looks and sounds decent. The talk of online multiplayer is definitely going to make this game one to watch. It's currently scheduled for a release later this fall, so hopefully it won't be too long before we get to see how the DS version's visuals are coming along.

I would assume Relic is the developer, but the press release doesn't say.

Interesting. Dig the Warhammer 40K universe, hope it does well in handheld form. Need to pick up those PC games one of these days...

Warhammer 40k turn-based tactical game, with online multiplayer? Yes please.

How ironic. Just last night I was wishing there was a new turn-based 40k game. I threw the Ngage version on my phone to check it out, and while it's not that bad, it left me wanting a more full-featured game with better controls. Seems like I got my wish.

@Orcist: Gotta pass on Big N's DS as well. I'm not into handhelds. But I have to admit that I consider getting a PSP ... I think there's no way to let "Chains of Olympus" slip through my hands. Oh well ... >_<

Hrn, interesting. 3 screens and a press release aren't enough for me to make a verdict on, but I got no problem with it being turn based(even though I do love me some dawn of war). What's the deal with the lack of army choices though? I needs me some eldar.
