THQ: 'Girls have better things to do than videogames' photo

James Scalpello, THQ's wireless director, has humorously stated that girls simply have more important things to do with their time than play games. Statistically, he ain't wrong, but you've got to love the bluntness of it all.

"When girls play console games, they have to have gone through a whole other list of things they could have done before sitting down with them," stated James, before screaming at his wife to get dinner on the f*cking table. "Guys get home, have dinner, and play a computer game. It's much higher up the list of priorities. To put it bluntly, girls have got better things to do."

Apparently, the original quotes of Scalpello have been changed up, but CVG recorded them for posterity. Scalpello is also yet to confirm what the "more important things" are that women have to do, but we're expecting him to list shopping for drapes, getting pregnant and ruining the lives of honest, hard working men.

Because we have decided he is a total sexist.

Holy overreactions, Batman.

Summary of the article, "Statistically, you're right, but man, you are soooooooooo wrong and you don't even know."

This man is guilty of stating the obvious, not sexism. Why thank you kind sir, I am completely startled by this new fact I've learned today that as a general population, females put video gaming lower on their list of things they want to do then males do.

Freetouch. Hey man. Seriously? Just being honest. I'm not trying to steal your thunder or anything. Obviously I'm not trying to be funny or witty. Either way, it just kinda sucks to see this whole misogynistic humor thing taking off the way it has. The only time it's funny is when Sterling does it and that's about it. I can't help but die a little inside when a grown man can kid around like that and it's O.K.

georgiom: Are you from Kotaku by any chance?

Seriously though, its humor, not seriousness... you "die a little inside"? o_O

Jim didn't even crack any jokes. I took it that way just for the fun of it. I read the article and understood the entire thing, but the opportunity was there, so I took it. Relax, its just the internet.

Sorry if I offended anyone with my awesome 1950's husband jokes.

Well I'm glad we guys are freaking lame, and girls are busy getting knocked up. Damn if only I could pull myself away from the games long enough to knock some more girls up.

Unless the women of dtoid are being sarcastic, i think you're taking this the wrong way. And i think THQ guy has not said what he means in the right way.

I take it to mean that everyone has a list of stuff to do, eg go to work, go to gym, go see friends, make dinner (on everyones list, i repeat!), etc etc. For most guys, playing games is higher on the list than most girls. I know very few guys who dont enjoy playing some type of video game, but very, very few girls who play games even rarely. Thats not to say there are none, of course.

@everyone:

although i'd rather stay out of this one (i have dishes to wash), i would like to note that it strikes me how irrelevant this all is to anyone who truly enjoys gaming. skillwise, the only people who really care about laying down WoW or Halo pwnage are people that don't have anything better to do, and at the end of the day those being pwned (albeit with frustration) still enjoy the games and choose to play them. also, being one of those pwners who do nothing but obsess over one game may in fact make you less of a gamer. struggling your way through contra, and sticking with it, is just as commendable as being able to speedrun through that ungodly, self-esteem destroying bastard of a game (i love it by the way).

ultimately, the fact is that one shouldn't discount someone due to rash generalizations. most girls may have something they'd rather be doing, but there are of course exceptions. guitaratomik is right gender has nothing to do with anything. insisting superiority based on gender is indeed misogynistic. there is no reason to argue about this; we all know the facts.

we're all gamers and we all love them. that's why we are here. if insults must be thrown, do it privately (read the commandments!) *this is directed at all parties.

Not necessarily, Scalpello!

See, thanks to new technology, you can now take your DS into the kitchen! While waiting for the rinse cycle to finish, she can play a quick game of Cooking Mama.

But seriously, what a fucking cuntwat.

I'll just point out the most recent example of what you guys are doing wrong with this discussion.

superflossy: "Um yeah, I totally..." Ok, stop. Here's where you make a critical mistake, you're taking a statement that's meant to encompass a whole massive group of people and making it personally apply to just you. Mr. Scalpello did not state "superflossy, the dominant force in the hivemind known as women, which are all exactly the same and have no personality differences between them, have more important things to do than play video games". He said that women, or at least the statistical majority of them, don't have video gaming as high on their list of priorities as the statistical majority of their male counterparts do. He didn't use extreme term stating that this mold fit everyone exactly the same. How can anyone call someone a "fucking cuntwat" for citing a fact?

He's saying WE have nothing better to do than play video games? That's just plain wrong, we have lots of better things to do, we just choose to play video games because they are awesome. Sometimes women think they are awesome enough to not do those better things too.

I think what it really shows is that women are more responsible than men overall. But then again I may just be making things up.

70% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
