THQ: 'Girls have better things to do than videogames'

THQ: 'Girls have better things to do than videogames' photo
     Girls of Gaming

James Scalpello, THQ's wireless director, has humorously stated that girls simply have more important things to do with their time than play games. Statistically, he ain't wrong, but you've got to love the bluntness of it all.

"When girls play console games, they have to have gone through a whole other list of things they could have done before sitting down with them," stated James, before screaming at his wife to get dinner on the f*cking table. "Guys get home, have dinner, and play a computer game. It's much higher up the list of priorities. To put it bluntly, girls have got better things to do."

Apparently, the original quotes of Scalpello have been changed up, but CVG recorded them for posterity. Scalpello is also yet to confirm what the "more important things" are that women have to do, but we're expecting him to list shopping for drapes, getting pregnant and ruining the lives of honest, hard working men.

Because we have decided he is a total sexist.

Trying to start a fire where there just ain't any fuel Jim... not everything has to be HEADLINE NEWS.

In this case, the guy is merely quoting exactly what your average girl would say when given the option of playing video games in their spare time. Even if it's merely watching TV, I'm pretty sure you'll find the average woman/girl has a lot of things they find "more important" than playing video games.

Not sexist.

To clarify my point, my wife plays Gears and Mass Effect as well as "casual" games. But, among my gaming cricle, she's an oddity. Most of my friends' wives not only do not play games, but despise them playing them as well. Of course, this is as anecdotal as evidence could get, but if I used the comment the CEO stated to describe my friends' wives, it would be true.

Waow, not-American and a woman. I'm really shafted today.

If this is based on proper research, then fair play. I'd probably have to agree with it in part, but I doubt it's the sole reason girls don't play videogames as much as boys.

Sorry, I must get back into the kitchen and then do my hair.

Yeah, poorly worded doesn't instantly mean "Sexist."

Not to mention the fact that I've seen this sort of thing first hand on several different occasions.

Often, I or my male friends rush home to play a new game or skip out on something else in order to game. Most of the girls that I know who game (to varying extents) don't do that.

For my girlfriend in particular, gaming is a boredom filler at best. And no, it's no because she has so much cleaning or cooking to do, it's because she'd rather be doing other "fun" things (art, design, playing with our dog) instead of playing games.

@pappadukes: So because your wife and my wife play videogames as much as we do, that nakes his statement wrong? How many of your friends have wives like yours? What studies have you read that show his statement is wrong?

Again, his statement might offend a few of the ladies who sincerely game, but on the other hand it might hold true for the general population. And considering they are business out to make money, being right on where to put their development funds is what matters to them, offending a smaller gamer base does not.

Girls do have better things to do, like cook me dinner, take care of the kids, clean the house, watch her soap opera's, Oprah, sewing, having periods, and having my fucking slippers ready when I come the fuck home! Oh... and she seems to like to fall down the stairs and hitting herself in the face with doorknobs. I'm not sure what else she does because I don't care. I had a hard day at work trading stocks. The least she could to is tidy up my domain... I mean, why else would I have this annoying broad around, so trivial with her little questions, and her easy life that I have provided for her. I mean, if it wasn't for me, she'd probably be whoring around town like all the other tramps. I know this, because I frequent these places to have sexual relations with some of them. I already did her a favor by marrying her, and why would I want to have sex with her after she's been cleaning, and doing all the easy work at home, It's bad enough we sleep in the same room in different beds. I know its hard work for her to do things like, sit on the couch, or, walk around in a dress with a nice bow in her hair. I'm being the gentleman, by having sex with other women, so my wife doesn't have to much on her mind, I know how hard it is for her to carry out multiple tasks through out the day. One less problem that my simple minded wife has to worry about!

What happened to the supposed statistics that 40% of gamers are women? That's a decent amount of the gaming population. It's not 5% for example. It's enough for THQ's statement to be total shit.

Good thing I never bought games from THQ to begin with. I have better things to do.

I don't think this is sexist. I just think that everyone has their own ideas on how they want to spend their free time. When I feel like playing a video game, I sit down and play it. I don't think about all the other things that need to get done. I just do it. Everyone is different. Although I will definitely agree that there are way more boy gamers than girl gamers out there.

But seriously, that's the dumbest thing I've heard in a while considering that the number of female gamers keeps rising as the gaming industry becomes more and more mainstream.
free touch's Avatar
free touch at 06/09/2008 12:24
@KARMACON: The reason there are all girl tournaments is because they simply can't compete with the smarter, better, stronger, faster male gamers. A study out of the University of Mayne says 95% of gamers are boys 18 and younger, and they are better than their female competition. The same study goes on to say 98% of women are to busy cooking and having babies to play these games, and the other 2% are combing their hair... I mean, what ever happened to Pong!?!?!

And another thing to add to his statement: Yesterday I was playing Condemned 2 multiplayer, and this girl takes over playing for her boyfriend. The entire time she's playing all she's doing is berating the other players on how they're wasting their lives playing what she deemed "stupid games". After I explained I was 26,married, and ran my own business, I asked her what she thought was more productive? She listed watching movies, listening to music, working(assuming we didn't even after we told her our jobs), and "hanging out". And of course, she plays games when she gets bored, but not "stupid" ones like the one she was playing, but "better" games. Finally, we asked what "better" games she played but got no response, as she had to go burn a cd. Real productive.

Just another piece of anecdotal evidence that supports this guy's statement. Now, I could counter his statement with my game obsessed wife, but which of the two is more likely?

But in all seriousness,

"When girls play console games, they have to have gone through a whole other list of things they could have done before sitting down with them,"

How is that any different from what guys do? Hell, I go through that "list of things to do" in my head every day. The reason why games are so high on that list isn't because I'm a guy, it's because I'm a gamer. I'm sure female gamers have videogames just as high on that list as I do, just as guys who aren't gamers have it just as low as women who aren't. Gender really has nothing to do with it.

Yeah, but you're talking about girls who are probably casual gamers (sorry the term needs to be used). I know guys who think the same way as that who just don't value gaming that much or don't play AT ALL. Granted, you're more likely to come across women who are like that but that's more of a societal thing than a gender thing and basically another conversation. But among gamers I don't think his statement has any truth to it.
Pixel Blue's Avatar
Pixel Blue at 06/09/2008 12:55
The statement is true for guys and girls. Everybody has this list. Some people are good at getting need-to-do items finished before moving onto the fun stuff, others aren't. Others have different items at the top of the "fun" section - art first, then games; games first, then reading.

What's interesting is why "play me some video games" is lower on most girls' lists than guys'.

@Guitar Atomik: Agreed, but I think his statement was in the context of the non-gaming general population. At no point did he mention "gamers", just girls in general wjo might happen to play games. Either way, the point still stands about labeling people so quickly. Even more so if the "humourously" statement in the article actaully means it was just a joke. No one is above stereotypical jokes.
