THQ doesn't care about sequels (but won't turn 'em down) photo

Destructoid was in San Francisco last week, checking out Metro 2033. The game has some serious potential and a very cool setting, but we've been wondering if there is any potential for a sequel, or if the game is being developed as a one-off game. We asked THQ, and the answer was quite frank.

"For me personally, as long as the game is enjoyable, I don’t care if it’s a sequel or not," retorts creative manager David Langeliers, "but there is a level of trust and set of player expectations when working with a franchise, that can both hurt and/or help you.

"When a Zelda fan goes out to buy the new Zelda game, they trust the product and they have a set of expectations concerning quality from the past titles they’ve played. If you live up to those expectations, then you gain more trust with the fan and they are likely to keep supporting you by purchasing your future franchise titles. Of course if you don’t meet their expectations then the trust can be diminished, and you may lose a long time fan.

"Today, I think almost every game from every studio is produced and developed with at least some thought of building a franchise in mind. If players enjoy something, they are going to want more of it. It would be a shame to let them down."

Does Metro 2033 have potential for a sequel? Stay tuned to Destructoid this week for a full preview, where we'll let you know exactly what this game is packing.

While noble I wouldn't say that guy has the last say in whether THQ cares about sequels. Sounds more like one man's opinion.

Oh and isn't Destructoid always in SanFran? This relocation business is confusing.

THQ doesn't care about sequels, but expect a new Smackdown Vs. Raw game every year for the next 500 years.

Agreed. Thq is a powerhouse and from a purely financial standpoint it would seem incredibly odd for a game developer to not consider "long term" possibilties. While I would hope that any game I buy is a self contained, fully enjoyable entertainment experience within itself. We all know that if Metro sells then they will do a prequel or sequel.

I think THQ have always had a bad time with sequels. The Suffering 2 and Broken Sword 4 were major flops if I remember rightly, so I can see where he's coming from here. Still, I don't think THQ have ever published a game that was more than just decent. Maybe Metro 2033 will change my mind, but we'll see.

Obviously there's probably going to be a sequel if it does well enough, especially since Dmitry Glukhovsky (the author of Metro 2033) already wrote the sequel to the book, Metro 2034.

The novel sequel is already written so it can easily be adapted to a game, but since nobody will actually buy this game...

@Stevil: THQ didn't publish or develop The Suffering: Ties That Bind. That was Midway and Surreal.

@Stevil
Supreme Commander, Company of Heroes and Dawn of War immediately come to mind in terms of whether or not THQ has published anything more than decent.

Didn't the Company of Heroes sequel (with the tank) suck ass? Unless you're talking about the first game, then never mind because the first one was a masterpiece.

@RIMoonlight Shit everything from RELIC, hell I loved the Suffering. Also Company of Heroes and the sequel were both good. They started leaning on CO-OP for the third sequel and ya that one kind of sucked. Ya ok they don't have to much luck with sequels (except Warhammer 40k which had what 5 sequels?), but they also are not the company to majorly advertise any of these games.

They are just not that big yet, to warrant the extreme finical backing of any game.

It's purely by miracle and the love of games that they are willing to try new things, new studios, ect ect,.

It is also why they continually make use of licenses, cause it's a cheap way to make money.

One day they will climb up out of this demi-godhood, and reach for better.

I'd buy the sequel. This game looks awesome enough for it.
