THQ, Capcom, Warner Bros. signed up to EA's Origin photo

Electronic Arts has announced that games from three major publishers -- THQ, Warner Brothers and Capcom -- will soon be made available via EA's Origin service. This is the first major step toward Origin becoming a full-fledged digital distribution marketplace.

Batman: Arkham City and Saints Row: The Third have been confirmed for Origin releases, and EA makes it quite clear that it has plans to include more publishers in future.

"Since launch, we’ve had overwhelming support from both publishers and developers across the gaming industry, recognizing Origin as an opportunity to deliver more of their great content straight to consumers across the globe," said Origin senior VP David DeMartini. "We’re excited to welcome Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, THQ and Capcom as the first publishers to offer their games via Origin."

So ... when are we getting Call of Duty up this grill?

As long as people have the choice between this, Steam and others all is good. If Origin gets 3rd party exclusives then problems will arise

Cool but it has a while before it can be on steam's level.

Major companies sign on. EA cuts prices to court customers. Gamers win.

I really have no problem with this. If you don't want to use Origin for these, continue using Steam.

Valve has been selling its games (Orange Box, and more) on Origin for months, so I donee see she these publishers are called the first.

Either way, lets see if EA will make a return to Steam, where superior features are offered, and many have an already established library.

Jesus, who would take EA seriously? I will never buy a product on origin, I bought BF3 at retail, and I don't know why it needs origin, it just sits there in the background scanning my info and selling it to china.

The only Valve games that have been selling on Origin are the boxed copies, which, is only because EA handles the distribution for them, and the PC versions force Steam and not Origin.

The last thing I would ever want to do is give EA my credit card information.

The fact that PC games are all going this route worries me slightly, it's fine now but I can see it being abused in the near future, especially when big name publishers like EA are behind it. I guess I just don't trust them.

I remember when you bought a PC game at a store and installed it, and that was it. I miss those days.

it makes the service more attractive but ild rather buy my games from steam.

They still need to improve origin itself plus price their games competitively. Exclusivity to origin with high prices will just make me walk away. Its not as if theres a shortage of alternatives with all the games that are been made atm.

February 2012: EA pays publishers to get Origin-exclusive content.

May 2012: Warner Brothers, Capcom, and others pull from Steam entirely for Origin cash.

October 2012: Valve devs begin talking of putting games on Origin.

November 2012: Newell gets angry, vows destruction.

December 2012: The Mayans were right!

I would be all for some competition for Steam, if i had even the slightest misgivings for it. As it stands i have yet to have a complaint about their service, and trust valve more than EA to respect their customers.

As long as other publishers aren't signing exclusivity agreements, then I'm fine with this. It's always good to have competition driving down the prices of games for everyone.

Fun fact: those publishers tend to use GFWL in their games. "So what?" Well, here's an answere: game with GFWL sells DLC through gfwl ONLY. Remember that "EA vs Valve"? That "Valve restricts the way DLCs are delivered"? Yeeeah
So, yeah. Good luck, EA. You will need it.
P.S. Today a lot of people had troubles activating retail BF3 serials. Just saying

@Hasney:
If not, then fuck em'. EA may be easy to label as the corporate monolith that embodies everything gamers hate about the industry, but they aren't stupid. While they are used to being the Goliath, they should be quite aware that they are David in the digital distribution arena. They are going up against Valve, a company that has built up an almost insurmountable sum of good will. EA will need to find a way to counter that if they want to survive.

Because the EA games I might *want* to play are on Origin and only Origin, and picking up a boxed copy forces me to install Origin.

That's not competition, that's monopoly.

@Victor Lee: Yeah a lot of it sure. Weirdly enough I judge things by current standards though and not the state things were a decade ago when such platforms were being pioneered.

@Kanten: Some boxed copies of Steam-enabled games do the exact same thing. Steam activation is compulsory and you cannot play the game without a Steam-account. Hell, you can't even play the game early because it won't activate until it's released on Steam.

Personally, I love Steam, but I don't see how that is any less monopolizing than EA's offer.

I do recall that gamers generally hated Steam back when Valve introduced it & made it mandatory. It got better and now few people have a bad thing to say about it.

Quite likely that if EA stick with Origin, it'll get better as well. Additionally, more ways to get digital content will presumably lead to better deals for us - competition & all that.
Forsakeneyes's Avatar - Comment posted on 10/27/2011 19:31

@Adonai: I certainly agree. People often seem to forget that Steam was far, FAR from perfect when it was first released in it's digital-distribution platform incarnation. But still, EA kinda deserves more flak because Valve were pioneers, while EA had more than enough time to copy the best bits and bobs into their own platform.

That said, it will probably get better and more accepted, at least I hope it will.

I got all the Bioware games for 60% off when they were doing a promo last weekend. Right now Crysis 2 is 60% off and You get $20 added to your account for preordering Mass Effect 3. They're trying, they just don't have much to sell yet.

I'm happy I got such great deals. It's just too bad that I keep getting download errors and whatnot. It's been almost a week since I bought my games and the only thing that managed to finish downloading was ME2. And that was only after several hours of customer support chat and a few CD key swaps. Hell, they even took all of the games off my account by accident one time. Took 2 CS reps 3 hours to figure out how to put my shit back. It's a nightmare at the moment, so I don't recommend anyone fooling with it if they don't have to.

Yeah, that's the shitty part. You only got those deals with a promo code and they didn't actually advertise the sale outside of Origin. People who already had Origin saw it and that's it. I heard about it in a forum and jumped on it. I'm not going to lie, though... If I knew how broken that shit was, I wouldn't have even bothered.
