THQ announces Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine photo

Do you remember a while back, when we found a Youtube video of a Space Marine action game? As someone who is particularly fond of Warhammer 40,000 games, I never quite forgot, and have been patiently waiting for THQ to announce it for a long time. Today is finally the day, with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine revealed for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Developed by Relic, Space Marine is billed as an action RPG where players take control of individual units on a battlefield. It aims to be "the most intimate and brutal Warhammer 40,000 experience to date." Games based on the classic tabletop franchise typically present themselves as strategy games, like the Dawn of War series. It's been a while since we've been able to get down and dirty in the trenches, which sounded disgusting, but was supposed to be perfectly innocent. Either way, this is hopefully going to be good.

Hit the jump, where we've reposted the early game footage. The game is being shown at E3, so we can see how far its come along since this early video was posted. Looking forward to it!

AGOURA HILLS, Calif.-- THQ Inc. today announced Warhammer® 40,000™: Space Marine®, from renowned internal studio Relic® Entertainment, will bring Games Workshop’s (LSE:GAW) Warhammer 40,000 science fiction universe to life on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system for the first time. The Action-RPG title will put players in control of individual units throughout a narrative-driven story campaign and in wide-scale online battles. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine will be unveiled at E3 2009 in THQ’s booth – number 5300 in the West Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

“The Warhammer 40,000 universe has a huge global following and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine will bring that world to life on the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 systems for the first time ever,” said Kevin Kraff, vice president, global brand management, THQ Inc. “Relic Entertainment is leveraging years of experience developing games within the universe to create an Action-RPG experience unlike anything seen before.”

“Space Marine is an Action-RPG built from the ground up for the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 systems, and will allow gamers to take control of individual units and fight in epic battles across the Warhammer 40,000 universe,” said Jonathan Dowdeswell, general manager, Relic Entertainment. “Relic has a deep understanding of the license based on our previous projects with Games Workshop, and our goal is to ensure Space Marine delivers the most intimate and brutal Warhammer 40,000 experience to date.”

About Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine takes place in the brutal, science fiction setting of Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe. In the 41st Millennium, humanity faces extinction at the hands of horrific aliens and demonic hordes. Only one force offers salvation, the superhuman Space Marines. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is an intense Action-RPG featuring epic battles where players take direct control of the ultimate defender of humanity, the mighty Space Marine. Space Marine is currently in development at THQ’s internal studio Relic Entertainment for the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 systems. In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war™…

I love the 40k universe, but I'm not keen on RTS games, so this looks pretty interesting.

I love 40k. I play as Dark Angels and Orks. Just wish we could play as a different chapter in this game.

It's important to note that this is actually not the same game that was leaked months ago that was in developement by THQ in Australia. That game was actually cancelled. This game is being developed by Relic, with the help of some of resources harvested from that dead title.
That being said. Do want. When I am not playing video games. I am playing Warhammer. When I get to combine the two, I become a happy, happy boy.

Space Hulk was a great game. Infact so was the board game, they really need to remake that.

This game and Warhammer 40k MMO are the two most exciting games I can't wait for!!!

Also, I saw the same article on Kotaku, and the new video shown there is MUCH different than this video.

By the will of the immortal god emperor! Now I have to clean my work keyboard from all the drool, thanks :P

On another note, is it a bad thing that I'm already wishing the expansion/sequel will read something like "Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Space Marine"?

My god... I can't wait to charge a line of Orks with Thunder Hammer at the ready. More than anything, I want this to be as epic as the trailer puts on because if we get a good third-person 40K game, who knows what else we can get.

I just hope they don't rehash the Blood Angels again. I'm so tired of them at this point and there are a lot of other great Chapters worth looking at for good character. Plus I get so sick of staring at my red colored space marines.

From the looks of the official announcement trailer, the game looks like it focuses on the Ultramarines Chapter.

@ZeroTolo - That would be awesome!

@ChaosTeaCup - True, it is a great feature... if only I could actually use it in the single player campaigns of the DOW series. I can't stand RTS multiplayer stuff and skirmish maps don't really do it for me.

@Magnalon - I try not to.

I loved Fire Warrior. It wasn't innovative, but it was solid as fuck, and Sean Pertwee was excellent in it.

Haha as a huge fan/player of 40K, I found it "ok". It was a good way to spend a rainy afternoon after finding it for like 5 bucks.

Also, using the words "innovative" and "FPS" in the same sentence creates a time paradox.

I'm not that taken on this. I'd rather be using cover, picking off targets with a bolter, than using it to "stun enemies" before dancing around with a chainsword. Just, things feel wrong watching that. The bolter looks as effective as an autogun, and it's focusing too much on sword-play, and i'm not really a melee-game fan.

I'll watch it, but I'm tired of all the Warhammer 40k games focusing on Space Marines.

Space Marines are bitches. Lets see some Orks, please.

No doubt this game will omit 80-90% of the races anyways. Space Marines vs. - and get this - CHAOS Space Marines!

THIS IS NEW AND EXCITING.

But I'm a glass-half-empty kinda' guy.

After all the great books for Imperial Guard (Gaunt's Ghosts, the IG omnibus, Ciaphas Cain etc), why can't we have an IG game? Battlefield 40k anyone? Chimera drivers and valkyre pilots linking up with foot sloggers and tank commanders, commissars holding the line (and getting shot in the back too), and portable vox units that need to be set up to extend the range of communications (ala chrome hounds). IG were always much more interesting, and even though I've read most of the SM books, it's always "oh i'm a genetically enhanced freak that loves to fight and will die but here's hoping it's a good death!" instead of "holy crap holy crap did you see the size of that thing, I'm not hanging around here!"

Looks okay for an early build, but I'm not convinced about the focus on melee and the fact that the bolter doesn't punch a hole the size of a fist through a normal guardsman. What I'd really like to see is a third person action RPG where the player character is a daemon-hunter inquisitor.
