THQ announces Saints Row 2 and ... hey, get back here! photo

In a news release that has the Internet shaking, Rockstar Games showed off their ...  huh? What? What do mean the other one? Oh, right, okay.

Hrmm, Hrmm ... In a news release that has the Internet making a sandwich, THQ announced that the sequel to their surprisingly high selling franchise Saints Row will be arriving on the PS3 and the Xbox 360 next year.

AGOURA HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 2007--THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI) today announced the next title in the award-winning Saints Row(TM) franchise is currently in development at internal studio Volition, Inc. and is scheduled to ship for the Xbox 360(TM) video game and entertainment system and PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system in 2008. The game will utilize Volition's proprietary open-world engine and deliver an all-new, cross platform gaming experience.

"The original Saints Row earned critical acclaim for its stunning graphics, unparalleled customization options and the genre's first-ever online multiplayer," said Kelly Flock, executive vice president of worldwide publishing, THQ. "The game's worldwide success shows the growing fanaticism for open-world gaming and our talented team at Volition is now using their proprietary technology to revolutionize the genre yet again."

Understandably, there may be some 360 fans that have been awaiting a sequel, but alas, the Sony crowd will be introduced to the thuggalicious world of Saints Row without any pretext. According to an article over at NextGeneration, the PS3 version of Saints Row -- which is supposed to be out around nowish -- has been cancelled due to the fact that the game would "essentially be a port."

That's too bad, I guess we'll just have to find something else to play until Saints Row 2 comes out.

I don't know the first one was kind of worth it when there wasn't a next gen GTA but after IV comes out is there really a point? Saints Row also had one of the worst endings ever amarite?

I don't know, but please don't talk about the ending. I just picked it up. I'm really enjoying it. I could play the Insurance Fraud activity all day. Once GTA IV comes out though, it's going to be a lot harder to plunk down for Saint's Row 2, although I'm sure I'll get it eventually.

I never even got to the ending.

Technically there are two endings.

But that's besides the point. Saints Row wasn't THAT bad, despite being a blatant rip-off of GTA. Will GTAIV remove the need for this series? Only if SR2 fails to deliver some original content and style that can make it stand on it's own two feet.

I honestly don't think you can have too much GTA, but then again I'm still waiting for a code that let's me change the dude form San Andreas into someone I don't want to drive off a cliff every five seconds.

Even though it is a blatant rip-off of GTA, its a good rip-off.
Imitation is the greatest form of flattery... Or however that goes.

I really enjoyed Saints Row, all bugs aside (which I rarely ran into, I think only once I did and it stopped my car cold in the middle of the freeway, it made me LOL), but then again I really love sandbox titles. I like being able to freely roam as I please, do what I please, kill as I please.

So yeah, I think I'm getting it, I guess.

I just don't know how to feel about these games anymore. Will GTA4 really be THAT awesome? Is Saints Row 2 pretty much going to be the same? Yes. Meh!

What does that mean?

You know when someone is talking about something that they say is important and your mind wanders to sandwich meat, cheese, and condiment combinations. It's that kind of news.

This game was a decent game to play for GTA starved people. but with IV around the corner SR2 is so irrelevant and unnecessary

Im with Dave insurance fraud is so much fun, throwing yourself in front of a speeding vehicle is awsome

Well, I think Saints Row did some things for the genre that, I hope, GTA copies. Targeting system anyone?

For me personally, the more games, the more choices, the better.

@ broham:

AMEN. I liked GTA3, but despised San Andreas. I just got Saints Row a few days ago, and I like it. So why not have a sequel?

I enjoy the GTA series, and thought Saints Row was great for reasons mentioned above - targeting, the mini games, and overall feel. I'll probably be done with GTA4 by the time this game comes out anyway, and ready for something new.

It's not like you can only play one or the other.

I loved Saints Row. It was a GTA rip-off, but was a better game all around than GTA ever was.

So, the PS3 version of Saints Row was cancelled?

i must admit i realy enjoyed saints row but now tha ive got halo 3 and assasins creed it makes you c how primative it was however parts of the game i still think are amazing eg:customising your cars ,getting a load of mates and blasting away rival gang members and yes, of course insurance fraud

some may say its a bad rip-off of gta, but in they couldnt be more wrong ,its an amazing rip-off(despite the ending) so i personaly am realy looking forward to a sequel.

ps. love the amount of cheats but wats with not having a cheat for the "aittrazone"
