This Xbox 360 System Update isn't THE System Update photo

A System Update is scheduled to hit Xbox LIVE this afternoon, but there’s no sense in celebrating the progress of the status bar. As Major Nelson is advising via his blog, this is not the update that adds all those E3-announced goodies like Twitter and Facebook and Last.FM. This is just one of those mandatory updates that does something only tech gremlins or a wizard can understand. At the end of the day, it adds WPA 2 Wireless Adapter support. Whatever that is

Those of you in the mood for some NXE Dashboard tweetin’ need look no further than our video preview of the content. In it, our main man Nick Chester quells the sick urge with footage and live-action shenanigans inside the anticipated update’s new feature set. Check it out and learn something.

Yup. Came home from work this morning, booted the box up, saw the update and thought it was something exciting to play with for a few minutes. No such luck. Just another one of those updates that I swear is slowly turning my 360 into a spy robot for the government.

I already got Twitter, Facebook and last.fm and I don't even think I signed up for the preview program, hahaha. Go me.

All the 'Goodies' suck. Except if you like Last.fm, that is pretty much the same as the website experience.

And Sky player is terrible. Just so terrible.

One more day until I can be... fabulous.

I'm in the preview program and I'm digging the update to the video marketplace. It now remembers all the content you've ever downloaded so you can re-download anything you want quickly. It also lets you stream content that you've purchased but have since deleted from you hard drive though it only appears to work on things I've purchased post update.

Is it really necessary to post a news article about every single little update on the dashboard? In the minute it takes to read this, the update has already downloaded and I already know nothing has changed.

I'm in the preview facebook is ok I tend to use my iPhone for facebook cause you can't look at peoples walls.

But I'm digging last.fm and I don't use Twitter at all cause well I just don't see the point of bloging every little thing of my life

I'm also doing the preview thing. It's not all that good. You can't really do anything easier or conveniently. I just do it on my computer. I tried to go to the forums to let them know but it's all too complicated. Yet another thing microsoft makes "user friendly".

Yeah, also very disappointed in the preview. The Twitter client is genuinely terrible - there are dozens of better iPhone clients made by lone developers, so god knows how MS cocked that up. It's clumsy, brings up the keyboard dialogue box even if you have a chatpad, doesn't allow automatic pasting of things like achievement or now playing announcements, doesn't allow more than one username per gamertag, can't follow links because there's no web browser, can't post links to marketplace content to share with other Xbox users etc etc etc.

The Facebook client isn't much better. It's not a Facebook client. It's a Facebook status viewer (with all the problems of the Twitter client at that) and a photo viewer. It doesn't do any of the other things Facebook is, and the few things it does are mediocre.

The only good addition is the Last.fm client, though I'd much rather have had Spotify and the 360's fans don't exactly lend it to music listening either.

Meanwhile these new additions, the Zune video store (seems exactly as useless as the old one if outside the US) and the complete shambles that has been the failed SkyPlayer launch have demonstrated one thing - the Xbox UI is crap for any lists of long items (anything longer than about five items). You can't see how long the list is in advance, search, sort into orders, see more than three or four items at a time and you can only move through labouriously one at a time. It needs a major rethink for lots of items.

You're totally right about the way Xbox sucks for long lists of items, but my biggest problem isn't the lack of searching or sorting, but the fact that I get seriously motion sick after scrolling through about 10 items. Seriously, on Netflix I can't see all the recommended movies because I get dizzy and have to leave the room for a while sometimes. It's ridiculous.
