This week's VC releases: Gay history edition photo

Another Monday, another update to the Wii's Virtual Console. Whether you want to take on the role of a creepy pink blob, a cyberpunk crime fighter or another obscure TurboGrafx character, the VC should have something for ... well, some of you I suppose.

This week's selection of ROMs for sale provide a mix of puzzling and violence, with the release of Kirby's Avalanche (SNES, 800 points), Streets of Rage 3 (Genesis, 800 points) and Legend of Hero Tonma (TurboGrafx16, 600 points). To be honest, my only experience with any of these games is Streets of Rage 3, which I remember looking very classy, but nothing beats the first one -- if only for the fact that one of the bosses is blatantly The Ultimate Warrior.

One thing you may know Streets of Rage 3 for is its inclusion and subsequent removal of Ash, a bare knuckle fighting, blatantly stereotypical gay boss. Although taken out of the Western version, a Game Genie could resurrect him as a playable character, making Sega the first game company to include the option to play as a homosexual. I somehow doubt he'll put in a Wii appearance.

Hit the jump for the official press release, as always. Any of this week's selection catch your eye? Let us know if your hard-earned Wii points will be taking a hit today.

Wii-kly Update: Three New Classic Games Added to Wii Shop Channel

When you take on a challenge, it's helpful to know your goal. Are you trying

to bury an opponent under colorful boulders, defeat the evil Syndicate's
lifelike robots or rescue a princess? Maybe all three? Well, you can rest easy
knowing that this week's diverse selection from the Wii Shop Channel is here

to help you take care of all the above.

Three new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new
games to the Wii Shop Channel every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed
Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points

can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new
games are:

Kirby's Avalanche™ (Super NES®, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii
Points): Everyone's favorite round, pink hero takes a break from swallowing

his enemies to put your brain to work in this fast-paced puzzle game. Players
take control of Kirby and match wits with well-known enemies from the Kirby
series (including his archrival, King Dedede) in an effort to win the First

Annual Dream Land Avalanche Competition. The simple-but-addictive game play
revolves around brightly colored blobs and boulders. When the right amount of
matching blobs are stacked, they explode and rain down on your opponent's

field of play. Repeat this until your screen is clear to move on to the next
round. But be careful—the farther you advance, the faster the blobs fall and
the smarter the opponents get. Are you good enough to help Kirby become the

avalanche king?

Streets of Rage™ 3 (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, rated E 10+ for Everyone 10 and
Older – Violence, 800 Wii Points): Just when you thought the world was safe
from the Syndicate and its shady leader, Mr. X, they have returned to torment

the city once again. Mr. X has developed lifelike robots to take the place of
various city officials so he can be in complete control. Now it's up to our
old heroes Axel, Skate and Blaze to stop the threat with their amazing

fighting skills. With more weapons and combat moves, as well as secret
characters and various endings, this return to the streets is one you won't
want to miss.

LEGEND OF HERO TONMA (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone – Mild

Cartoon Violence, 600 Wii Points): LEGEND OF HERO TONMA is an action game that
puts players in control of the magic-user Tonma, whose role – as was typical
for game heroes of the day – is to travel to another world and save the

princess. Fight your way through seven stages using Tonma's jump ability and
shot power. Collect power-ups and barriers to grow in strength and pummel your
enemies. Bring that strength to the end of each stage to face off against and

defeat the menacing bosses that aim to keep you from the princess. This well-
detailed game's comic visuals and feel will have players wanting to come back
for more frantic and exciting action.

Looks like a light week on the VC for me. Just as well. I need to get another point card anyway.

"Everyone's favorite round, pink hero takes a break from swallowing..."

There's a dirty joke in there somewhere.

Okay, I give up on the VC. Nintendo doesn't know what they're fucking doing. Sure they have the tentpole releases as I'm sure SMB3 is looming in November with UR MR GAY coming, but I'm convinced that Nintendo is trying their damn hardest to make the VC as irrelevant as possible in the US. Why else would they totally fucking ignore the hundreds of quality titles out there week after week to release garbage no one wants to play?

And I'm not ripping on weeks where there's 1 title or something, there's LONG tears where there's just shitty releases peppered throughout when there's a ton of quality titles that go ignored.

Is Nintendo under contract to release a Genesis and TG-16 game every fucking week? No matter how shitty it is? How deep is the well for crappy TG-16 games? I never recall there being this many.

Nintendo, did you guys stop to think about how there's more shitty TG-16 games on the VC than there are good NES games on the VC? What the hell?

And what's the selection process? Shitty $2 TG-16 game, Genesis sequel of the week, and random 1st party game that no one's heard of for SNES or NES?

Jim, you guys seriously gotta get an insight to the selection process to the VC. It makes no fucking sense to me why there's release delays between regions, lack of support for wanted games, and the ghost town that it 3rd party releases.

Games that need to be fucking released, and drop the pretentious 3 games a week bullshit:
MegaMan 1-8, X-X4
Strider
Bionic Commando
Castlevania III
Castlevania II
Ikari Warriors
Heavy Barrel
Duck Hunt
Turok 2
Super Mario Kart
Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy IV
Metal Gear
CONTRA
Rush'n Attack
Tetris
Donkey Kong 3
Sin and Punishment
Super Mario Bros. 2
Earthbound
StarTropics
Goonies 2
Super Volleyball
Commando
1941
Ninja Gaiden 2
Ninja Gaiden 3
Rad Racer
Life Force
Mappy
Parodius
Puzzle Bobble
Bubble Bobble
SMW 2: Yoshi's Island
Gumshoe
Hogan's Alley
Wild Gunman

And all this is unlicensed content. No barriers getting this shit out. With a little bit of money thrown their way, you guys should be getting ontop of some licensed content as well. Tell Disney that there's money to be made with DuckTales and Rescue Rangers. I'll BUY BOTH FOR GOD'S SAKE! And Aladdin!

Blah... a puyo-pop clone, a brawler who's better counterpart (II) has already been released, and a game I've never heard of.

The best week ever, this is not.

I'm predicting a 2/5 dolphin score. But, it's such a low two that the dolphins aren't even getting along; they're... fighting over a game of cards or something.

I agree with dvddesign about them releasing shitty games, but the 3-4 a week is brilliant marketing. It puts the spotlight on titles people may never have heard of but which are still awesome, and gives us something to look forward to each week (or would if we could be sure of anything good coming out.) If they just dumped everything at once people would forget about all but the 4 or 5 absolute must-haves on their list and never download games that they were fully intending on getting but got lost in the shuffle.

A good chunk of Nintendo's best games are up now, though most of them are marquee franchise ones that gamers (at least Nintendo fans) already bought for their original systems, and not the rare games or obscure titles. They really do need to stop releasing shit like China warrior, though.

@ A New Challenger:

I really wish they did release more obscure titles. As a kid, I didn't even know games like Earthbound, Uniracers and others even existed, much less ever played them. These are the titles that I'm waiting for.

Paper mario has been, for me, the best buy on the VC so far if only because I was never able to play it when I was younger. I got almost 30 hours out of that game, and I only paid $10 for it! All the other ones have mostly been rereleased anyway...

Nintendo knows that if they dump all the awesome at one time, people won't pick up the okay stuff out of curiosity or boredome. They're staggering the releases because they like money. Does it suck? Yup. Does it means we won't get most if not all of the awesome titles eventually? Nope.

I'm not asking for a total release, all at one time, but something on par with the Japanese VC would be nice. They've got a whole 50 more games to choose from. And, to be honest, they COULD be releasing one game from EVERY platform every week and sustain the service for years with weekly releases. I hate the merry-go-round of choosing titles. We go 4-6 weeks between N64 games, once/twice a month for NES games, and the like. If we were getting a decent selection of quality games every week, it wouldn't matter as much. We can say, "They stagger for money", well there's the aspect of diminishing returns when you put a whole month and a half between quality NES releases.

And WTF are they thinking to dredge up Donkey Kong Jr. Math of all titles? Around the jokey concept of going back to school and then totally ignore the Hanabi Festival they're doing in Europe? That's ignorant and retarded for a sales pitch. TEE-HEE! We're being cute. No, you're acting stupid on purpose. I can take a joke if there's a silver lining to it, but actually expecting people to want that game in earnest and not have a 4th title to back up the "joke" title is freakin' stupid. It initially seemed to me when I first heard of the VC service that I'd be busy buying titles every week, thinking there'd be this surplus of 300-400 titles within the first year to choose from.

I mean, we're talking about 5 different consoles, with 2 more on the way. 5 consoles with a history of over 20 years and several thousand titles. Granted, the complexity of licensed games limits the releases a good deal, but there's still plenty of titles to be had across all consoles. If you look at the NES alone, assuming Nintendo takes their current track record of 3 NES titles a month, in a 5 year timespan, that's only going to be 1/4 of the full NES library. And that's not a lock for all A+ titles either. We've seen shit titles like Urban Champion, DKJr. Math, and Mach Rider that pretty much assure we're going to be running a mix of shit we want really badly, and stuff that no one would ever want, even as a joke.

There's reasons why no one's been clamoring for Wrecking Crew and Popeye.

Hey, don't knock Popeye. I had the Atari version and fairly recently got the NES one. Too bad they aren't going to put the arcade one up ever ever.
