You see that password up there? You just might need it. Among this week's Virtual Console releases is Punch Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream (NES, 500 points). For those old school gamers reading, don't be alarmed. This is the same classic game that you remember, except that it's just missing the ear-biting, woman-abusing pugilist, Mike Tyson.
The game was re-released in 1990 without Tyson's name attached and with his sprite replaced with that of Mr. Dream. While many believe this was due to the rape scandal/conviction involving a Miss Teen America, this is said to not be true.
Historians will blame contract disputes and a loss to James "Buster" Douglas (who was featured in a terrible Genesis game) for the removal of his name and likeness. But let's be real -- if Mario raped a Miss Teen America, Super Mario Galaxy could easily be turned into Mr. Dream's Space Adventure.
Other games rounding out this week are Virtua Fighter 2 (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) and Bonk's Revenge (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points). Hit the jump for the full press release, sans rape and ear biting references.

Wii-kly Update: Three New Classic Games Announced for Wii Shop Channel
Three classic games from three classic systems. The only problem you'll have this week is deciding which one to download first. For the best retro gaming around, it's time to pay a visit to the popular Wii(TM) video game system's Wii Shop Channel.
Three new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points(TM) to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:
Punch Out!!(R) Featuring Mr. Dream (NES(R), 1 player, 500 Wii Points): As young boxer Little Mac, players have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to battle the big guys of the World Video Boxing Association circuit. Take them on one by one, starting with skinny Glass Joe. Battle up through King Hippo and all the way to the WVBA Champion himself. Players use their best jabs, hooks and power uppercuts to knock out opponents, but must pay attention to subtle changes in their body position to dodge jaw-breaking blows. With great graphics, addictive action and a touch of humor, this game will keep players entertained for hours.
Virtua Fighter(TM) 2 (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): Virtua Fighter was the very first 3-D fighting game in the industry and introduced six unique characters, each with their own martial arts style. In Virtua Fighter 2, the intrepid fighters return to the World Fighting Tournament. Players take to the stage to see who will claim the championship title. Will it be Lau Chan, Kage-Maru, Wolf Hawkfield, Jeffry McWild, Akira Yuki, Jacky Bryant, Sarah Bryant or Pai Chan? The answer lies within. Players immerse themselves in this technically challenging game and see if they have what it takes to be the champion of the second World Fighting Tournament.
Bonk's Revenge (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): The "hardheaded" hero is back for more in the second installment of the Bonk series. Taking place in the Monster Kingdom, Bonk the Caveman makes his way toward King Drool III. Bonk's Revenge is a side-scrolling action game in which players Jump and "Bonk" (head-butt) their enemies while they make their way to the goal at the end of each stage. Double, even triple, attack power by eating the meat that appears in a stage. There are eight different hidden bonus stages, and the Dinosaur Train that appears after players defeat a boss will change depending on how many Smileys they've collected. With new actions such as the Triangle Jump and the ability to climb trees, as well as seven variety-packed stages, Bonk's Revenge will keep players playing over and over.

hmmm, whats with the re-living the old school games on next gen consoles... Those games you can play for free you know... Just saw Mortal Kombat 2 on PS3 Network for 5-bucks...
is sony, MS and Nintendo squeezing the old-school games out to their last drop?
Atleast use the 32x version and give the kids their moneys worth.
Because they can. In case you didn't notice, we've been rebuying arcade games for over 20 years now. Take Galaga for example. This game has been rereleased on: NES, 2600, 7800, C64, the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, as a mobile phone game, the MSX, PSX, PS2, N64, Dreamcast, Xbox, the Wii and the 360.
When have they not been reselling us the same old games?
Fact is, people like these games and like playing them on their systems. Not many people are willing to go through the hassle of downloading a ROM, setting up a keyboard/mouse config they like to play a rousing game of Ms. Pac Man on their 17" LCD when they can go play it on their Xbox 360 with a controller that's truer to the arcade.
I'm kind of an emulation snob. If I can play it on a console, I'd rather have it there. It'll be more free of the bugs and issues that you run into with SOME (not all) ROM's.
I just want to know when they'll be porting Mad Dog Mcree to the Wii's VC. I'm sure it's coming... I'd rather have that than Ikari Warriors, Mega Man, Final Fight, Strider, or Bionic Commando.
and Gyruss. 800 and 400 points for them.
Still no Double Dragon, goddammit!
That's insanity -- you're the only person I know who isn't totally gay for Punch Out!!
Jamesway:
Yeah, I've heard that as well -- Minigolf is temping, although I'll definitely take a pass on Gyruss.
VF2 was fantastic for it's time. I would love to go back and play that. Although, after playing 4 and Evo for years, prolly not nearly as great as you remember.
I'm the exact opposite.
I was frequently forced to shed old systems when I was a kid, and never got to keep my 2600, NES, SNES, N64, and so on. Now that I have a chance to rebuy these games AND potentially keep them for years, I'm ecstatic about Mondays.
That's why I buy the games I never got the chance to play, like TurboGrafix 16 stuff and Gunstar Heroes, and why Super Mario Bros. and Ocarina of Time haven't been downloaded on my Wii.
The one thing that does worry me about the VC is that we're very unlikely to see budget compilations of 20 or so games ever again when each one individually can fetch 5 bucks or more. Really, the possibility of an R-Type collection happening any time soon was diminished by me buying R-Type and R-Type III for 16 bucks on the VC.
Still better than the scam that was the Classic NES Series, though.
Now I just need Super Punch-Out.
FUCK NO!!! ARE YOU INSANE?!?!? Wii boxing is lame and unresponsive. You need to download the original and play it again to wake the fuck up.
If there's no Mr. Sandman, Bald Bull, or Super Macho Man in it, then it's not Punch-Out.
And since when has Punch-Out had a story?
You don't return my calls or invite me over anyhow, because you hate me. But I miss you and love you. Still.
As for a new Punch-Out...GOD PLEASE. I am afraid a cockeyed Wii-vamp of the controls could ruin the experience. Wii Boxing was a nightmare. Same mechanics + new boxers = sold.
What a great candidate for a new, original software Wii Shop release.
Mr. Dream is just a palette swap of Mike Tyson, he plays identical. But if it means that much to you... :)
