This week's VC release: Super Turrican

This week's VC release: Super Turrican photo
     Virtual Console

Just when I was starting to adjust to the the idea that two games a week were enough, Nintendo decides to take advantage and give us only one title for this week's VC releases. Sometimes, I feel a little abused by it all, you know? I wish you could appreciate me sometimes, Nintendo. I'm a good woman, even if you can't see it.

Anyway, this week we get Super Turrican: (Super NES(R), 1 player, Rated E 10+ for Everyone 10
and Older – Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points),
which is the first of two games following the adventures of Bren McGuire and his fight against the Machine. While I can't tell you how great this game is or isn't because I don't remember it well, I can tell you Gamasutra reported in April of last year that Factor 5 is working on new concepts for a Turrican title, so this game may be perfect to play while you await the next-gen incarnation.

The game is available as of 9am Pacific time, per the usual drill. (This one was actually a tad late, as it apparently takes Nintendo longer to announce one game than the usual three.)

Wii-kly Update: One New Classic Game Added to Wii Shop Channel

March is roaring in like a lion on the Virtual Console™. This might be a good
time to look back at the massive catalog of classic games and ask yourself if
you've played them all. Well, have you? You know there are some unplayed gems
in there that your friends keep raving about, like this week's release, Super
Turrican. Not to mention the games you haven't played since you were 10. Go
ahead and fire them up – you'll feel like a kid again. Just think of the
Virtual Console as your own personal fountain of youth.

Nintendo adds new games to the Wii™ Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every
Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii
Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop
Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new game is:

Super Turrican: (Super NES(R), 1 player, Rated E 10+ for Everyone 10
and Older –
Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): You are Bren McGuire, on a United Planets
Freedom Forces mission to save the peaceful planet Katakis from the Machine,
source of all that is cruel and evil in the universe. The only weapon on your
side is the state-of-the-art Turrican Assault Suit. Equipped with multiple
weapons, including the incredible Freeze-Beam that temporarily immobilizes
almost any enemy, the Turrican Assault Suit gives one man the power of an
entire army. Use the myriad weapons and powers at your disposal to fight
through 12 increasingly insane levels, free the innocent residents of the
planet Katakis and crush the oppressive Machine.

I bought this game a few months ago and was really disappointed. It's got good controls and awesome weapons, but layout motifs are reused so often in each level that you easily lose track of where you are (Is this pillared monster corridor the one near the beginning of the level, the middle, the other middle, the other-other middle one, or the end? Add that to the fact that each level is a maze that is TIMED and the result is Fuck You. Give this one an extended test drive before you plunk down 800 points.

I kind of want because of the apparent Metroidness, but there is not enough mullets or Judas Priest to warrant a purchase.

Damn, When I read the headline I was hopping this was the first C64 game. Turrican on the C64 was a cracking good time as they'd say in the UK.

Hard and frustrating as f*ck! But amazing soundtrack for the time! Just listen to the haunting piano opening. The first few levels has some real moving music if ya take the time and listen.

My fav piece of music starts at 4:00 in this Super Turrican Clip
It's hard to hear with all the sound effects going on. I used to lower sound effects. I still do that today. Music comes first for me. Even though developers still set audio default with game music lowered. Meh!

@Orionsaint

I agree, this is one of the best piece of soundtrack of the SNES. Used to do the same as you, and even played piano along with the musique sometimes :) Ah, good memories...

Do not feel the urge to buy. I cannot stress how much of a waste of money this is, lol.

This is why I wont pick a Wii VC game for the week.
