This time we mean it ... we think: BioShock on the PS3 is real (Update)

This time we mean it ... we think: BioShock on the PS3 is real (Update) photo
     2K games

In February of 2007, I wrote a story entitled "Bioshock coming to the PS3? No. Maybe. Probably. Yes!". Within hours, we were contacted by 2K Games who answered that question with a firm "no." But rumors continued to persist, and in November 2007, Jim Sterling reported that an official moderator on the 2K forums said "There will be no PS3 version of BioShock. It has been explained time and time again."

And that was that. The 2007 Game of the Year, and Xbox 360 and PC exclusive BioShock is never coming to Sony's console. Forget about it.

Wait, no ... don't forget about it! Because according to the rumors in the latest Electronic Gaming Monthly, BioShock is coming to the PS3 later this year with the extras the other versions got post-release. And today, word comes that the latest issue of UK magazine PSM3 will contain information and screenshots on the forthcoming version of BioShock for the PS3.

2K's not talking, but I think it's pretty safe to say PS3 owners will have the chance to dive into the underwater city of Rapture later this year. They should be excited; I hear the game is pretty good.

[Update: There was really no question about it, but this has now been confirmed. The upcoming issue of EGM will have the full scoop on the game, as well as an interview with the sequel's creative director, Jordan Thomas.]

No comment on that, but did you miss the part where PSM3 has an entire "exclusive" article about the game?

I hate to say it but PSM3 has about as much integrity as a tabloid, maybe less. I hold no hope for this.

I've been debating between getting a 360 and a PS3, and if this rumor is true, then I'm sold on the PS3. If not, then the debate continues!

Well, this is a game that I have almost broken down and bought a 360 to play it. If this is true, I'm totally pumped. Guess we'll wait and see - But, the rumors are ciculating in a lot of places now.

it's going to be really interesting to see how it turns out.

so far 360 ports to PS3 have been less than stellar, let's see what 2K can do w/ this.

They aren't saying it is a rumor but confirmed....and no word on if it is a port or not.

I would think this is a move of desperation by Take Two (who owns 2K) trying to drum up more an more business to prevent EA takeover. How well has Oblivion done for them really?

Would be the injection the PS3 needs, im quite suprised MS havent paid 2k cash for the rights though considering they paid R* 50million for exclusive content!

Hopefully this is really true. Ever since switching my console to the ps3, there has been some exclusives I have sorely wanted to play. Bioshock being one of those.
Great news if true! Not holding my breath however.

I was kind of excited about Bioshock when it was released. I owned a PS3, and still do, but I thought it looked like a cool game. I have been mostly interested in getting my hands on a PS3 sequel (or prequel or whatever), but I'd be happy if part 1 came out on PS3. That said, I probably wouldn't buy it when it comes out. I'd wait for it to get down to $40 or $30 depending on how long that'd take. FPS without multiplayer just don't appeal to me enough to drop $60 in my opinion.
My guess is this will eventually happen. Mark my words if I'm right.

Bioshock was my most memorable game till GTA came out. A great title, but a PS3 version this late would need considerable extra content to even interest me. My bet is a 3rd party developer has remade it with bonus content which will be poor. Ps3 has had no luck with translations from other formats and I am pretty sure this will be the same old story. Oh yeah, all you PS3 owners, the whole game is a dream sequence and you are really a ghost.
There - now you dont need to play it.

seriously, if true, its a little late in coming, but a great game that should grace both consoles. i do agree with the linearity of it, but great narrative and atmospherics.

Ugh...It's good that a whole new group of people will be able to experience the game, but I'm not looking forward to the inevitable Sony fanboys gloating that their version runs *slightly* better and act as if it's due to the PS3's Cell. Same thing happened with Oblivion. They all seem to ignore the extra year their version gets. Can't wait...[/sarcasm]

Bioshock was a pretty darn good game, but I could never shake the disappointment that it had been 'dumbed down' for console play. System Shock 2 is probably my all time favorite game. Gripping voice acting, brilliant storytelling, scary as hell... Bioshock was a far more simplified experience. But then, SS2 wasn't anywhere near as popular, was it?

Still, Bioshock was a blast. I would have preferred it to be harder (I played it through at the hardest setting available and it was not difficult). The ease of resurrection, along with the fact that regardless of your choices, you still ended up with almost all of the upgrades left it all feeling a little devoid of real danger or decision making. Because I'm strangely obsessive, I refused to continue playing if I died and was resurrected, instead loading an earlier save game. Made it a little more tense, but knowing what it COULD have been... /sigh

It's always nice to see more people be able to enjoy a good game.

I couldn't help but LOL @ the "Xbox's best shooter" line though. I thought Bioshock was decent, but nothing special. A solid rental.

I echo the sentiments of Faultymoose. If only more people had played System Shock 2 when it was first released on PC back in the day. I feel lucky to have been at the right place at the right time when I managed to stumble across that game. Truly an unknown classic of gaming history.

I also didn't use vita chambers. If I died, I quick loaded back to a safe spot I saved at earlier. That was the only way it made sense to me. Otherwise, whats the point of caring about your own life then?

This on PS3 makes me happy to have more people play this great game. But what I'd really love is if more people had a chance to play SS2. Seriously, I made a friend play it with me co-op patch because he had never played it and doesn't retro game much. He thanked me afterwards :)

Well better late than never I guess. I have this for PC and I enjoyed it. The story and atmosphere were great, gameplay was decent, an overall great game. But even if I didn't have it for PC I'm not sure I'd get it for my PS3, definatly not for $60 I can tell you that.

I dislike the fanboys as well, but let's not get carried away and forget the two expansions to the game that were worked on and came out in that one year period as well. They did a tremendous job on the cross-platforming of the game and it was well worth whatever time it took them to get it done as well as get in both of their expansions into one game. I hope all conversions get as much attention as Oblivion did, exporting to the PS3 or the 360.
