This portable Nintendo 64 looks pretty nice photo

Destructoid reader David sent in images and videos of his handmade portable Nintendo 64, which he calls the D64. This is a retro system brought up to date as a portable system, running off rechargeable batteries. It utilises a PS1 screen and a N64 joy pad, with rumble and memory built in. This thing even has a multi port adaptor for split screen multiplayer action.

In his videos you can see a slideshow of the system's build progress as well as a demonstration of how the multi port adaptor works for multiplayer.

It's amazing that all of the system and controller parts fit in that little case, let alone the screen and speakers. Great job, David.

It amazes me that people can do this kind of thing independently.

I can hardly put a wrist strap on my 3DS :)

Gross, why would you want to play N64 games with a PS2 analog stick? That stick is garbage, and the N64's stick was great. It had resistance to it, and things like first person in OOT were designed with that in mind, making it impossible to control with a modern loose-as-fuck control stick.

This is awesome. Shame on all you haters. It's an impressive piece of work, ergonomic considerations aside. I'd love to be caught playing this on the subway, if only for all the gawking and inevitable "Where the heck did you get that?!"

@Taku
I think you have that backwards. My PS2 stick doesn't grind itself away after play time. I've never played an N64 that didn't have a layer of plastic dust around the analog stick ring.

@Sonic9jct I never claimed the stick lasted. The resistance was unfortunately also its downfall, as the stick would eventually wear out and break. That's why Nintendo doesn't use them anymore. A fresh N64 stick is superior to any modern control stick, but once they're worn out they're utter shit. I suppose for a project like this the stick choice makes sense, but I'd still prefer an N64 stick.

Oh, and for anyone extolling the virtues of the N64 stick, the AES > all, and the AES came out in 92.

Doesn't a portable N64 already exist? By portable N64, of course I'm talking the 3DS.
