I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a fan of Mark Wahlberg's work. His performance in Fear will have me keeping a close eye on my future daughter, and P.T. Anderson's Boogie Nights is -- without a doubt -- one of my favorite films of all time. Also, "Good Vibrations" is my ring tone when Niero calls me.
So I've been very open to the film adaptation of Max Payne, starring Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. But after seeing this International trailer for the film, I'm not sure what to think anymore. Sure, it actually looks like a pretty decent action movie, with a lot of things exploding and Wahlberg really embracing the whole brooding ex-cop thing. But then there's monsters ... with wings ... and something about Satan.
Granted, it's been awhile since I've played Max Payne or Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, but I don't remember killing any demons. Or do I? This trailer has me so confused.
Max Payne, a story of one man's battle against Satan and the Hatian mob (and maybe even aliens!), is set to hit theaters on October 17.
[Update: So apparently this trailer is just so totally yesterday's news. There's a newer version of the trailer, thanks to Vesty, that can be found after the jump.]
Dude this trailer has been out a while, do you not visit the cinema....
Im guessing its drug induced episodes or his dreams...but yeah i dont remeber them from the games....maybe there a comic out or something we dont know about??
I think that rather than the strange dream scenes (with crying babies and all that) that we had in the Max Payne games they've opted for this type of hallucination instead. Personally I think it's a good change for cinema as I don't think people would quite care for the dream sequences of the game.
Also the angel/winged creature is supposed to be a Valkyr(ie) I'm pretty sure. I'm guessing in the film when Max is drugged up and kills someone he haluncinates the Valkyr taking away the soul/body/alloting death (which is roughly what the Valkyr's were responsible for in Norse mythology I believe).
Don't forget that during the game Max Payne ends up using and/or being injected with enough drugs to kill a horse. So I don't think that the whole valkyrie thing is that bad if it's some kind of hallucination, but I do think the trailers are emphasizing it a little too much and making the movie look different than what it is (probably) going to be like.
I've never played any Max Payne game before, so, as far as relating to the game goes, I don't have much of a say here. But, as a movie geek, I'm actually a bit excited about this. Fantastic trailers.
Max Payne had a lot of references to the devil and demons, especially in the Ragna Rock level of the first game. I doubt he will actually be fighting demons and alike but im sure they will be used as a way to demonstrate the presence of some of the more crazy characters.
Plus the name of the drugs in the game is Valkyr which doesnt have anything to do with Valkyries but there could be a connection to why they are appearing in the film. Like to say due to the drug people are hallucinating seeing Valkyries.
Its all open to interpretation like most games based films.
Yea, I'm going with the whole demon is a hallucination theory. They are emphasizing the demons to make this look like Constatine 2, which is gonna piss some people off, but make the gamers happy.
Personally, I wanna see it if the demons are hallucinations. If they're real and Max Payne has to fight them, then its a no go for me.
Yeah, I bet it's a hallucination. Not real. Max Payne was drugged out of his mind for much of the game, and he saw some messed up things. The game was always as much about what was going on in Max's head as it was about taking down the bad guys.
I'm guessing they're valkyries, evil demonic kinds, wich comes into play after Max is doped up on valkyr and hallucinating. The guy being "dragged" out the window by one, is a guy being shot and falling out action movie style, hes dying, valkyrie grabs him. The shot where you see lots of them means there are a whole shitload of people dying. And so on.
I suppose they're playing up the mindfuck parts in order to differentiate the film from other mindless aciton films, like Shoot'em Up for example.
I think it looks really good. They really nailed the whole noir feel of the game.
To much focus on the Valkyrie thingys. They weren't that prominent in the game. Makes the film look like a supernatural thriller. Just gimme MP3 and I'll give this a miss.
Well in the first game (which I have recently run through again in anticipation for the movie), there were many allusions to Norse mythology with the Valkyr drug (Valkyries), Aesir Corperation (Aesir is the major pantheon of gods in Norse mythology), Ragna Rock (Ragnarok, the Twilight of the Gods), the characters Alfred Woden and Alex Balder (Woden is the Germanic form of Oden, and Balder seems to be pretty popular here lately.) and even down to the setting of the game (in the game the huge winter that hit NY is similar to the Fimbulwinter in Norse Mythology, which is said to be a precursor of Ragnarok.)
I think that the winged creatures in the movie are just symbolic representations of the Angel of Death. They could be Valkyries, but Valkyries weren't winged. They rode wolves. But I can pretty much guarantee that they are the result of hallucinations (lets face it, Max really isn't the cleanest cop on the force). The movie looks like it is gonna keep the great noir aspect intact, and may be the best game-based movie for a while.
I'm a heathen, I haven't played Max Payne. That movie looks awesome though. I hope I'll enjoy it for what it is and not pointing out all the flaws that will no doubt appear.
I'm willing to give this a shot even though I think Kunis is horribly miscast but I'll definatly try to see it. It was one of the first PC games I remember playing that made me go "holy shit this is cool."
I think the whole demon guy thing will either be a hallucination or some weird cinematic interpretation of him finally dying and going to hell or something....
I dunno, it looked pretty dodgy.
I hope this movie is good, it actually looks good but after seeing wing boy, I am not so sure
Lmfao if those "things" aren't just his crazy hallucination side then dear god they are going to ruin the name of a great old game. Some bit's did remind me of the game so it might not be a total fail (Hitman anyone?)

Dirk Diggler ftw? P.T. Anderson much?
I'll probably see this movie.
That new trailer is awesome.
maybe even if he used it as a weapon
Actually, Scotty J ftw.

Creepiest character since Hannibal Lecter.

Marky Mark ftw.

Sweet trailers, I must admit I'm kind of excited for this movie.
Anyone know what that sweet song is?
