So how’s your night going? Good, eh? Well, prepared to have your night ruined, as you’re about to watch a kid (after the break) play Guitar Hero on expert AND solve two Rubik’s cubes at the same time.

Julian plays Ozzy Osbourne’s “Mr. Crowley” in Guitar Hero World Tour by looking at a mirror showing the TV’s reflection in order to capture the video. He also solves two Rubik’s cubes with one hand as he plays the song.

He’s able to get 77% completion on the song and solve both cubes in the span of four minutes. It's times like these that really makes me wish that I had A.D.D.

This kid doesn't appear to have a single talent I am envious of.

Solving Rubik's Cubes and playing Guitar Hero are both things I can do, albeit not as well as he can. But I'm not bent out of shape about it.

For instance, I'm certainly much more attractive than him.

Neat way to shoot the video though.

ADD wouldn't get you very far, he needs to concentrate on two things at once. ADD wouldn't let you do one of those.

Another joke ruined! Soon the omega device shall be complete....

Now all he needs to do is replace the strum bar with a rubik's cube that has to be solved in order to strum. Once.

I have no problem strumming with the elbow when needed... which means I'm doing one of two things with my hand. One of them is reaching for a beer. The other involves something naughty... but trust me, Rubix Cube is more challenging.

Anyone who knocks this video and what this kid is doing is a total douche, simply because it's impossible to duplicate. He gets major kudos from me.

Yea, stop hating. I can certaintly kick ass at Guitar Hero, but I can barely even solve a Rubix Cube.

I did have a friend in High School that solved the algorithm for a Rubix Cube, so he could solve it in under a minute no matter what position it was in. He's at MIT presently. This kid could easily be a genius!

Also: young chicks nowadays dig weird kids that look like the Jonas Brothers. With that hair, if he worked out, and waited a few years, he could get decent girls easily. If he's too shy to go out and get a girl, who the fuck cares? He do what he want!

Yeesh. Everyone always assumes ADD is like some kind of magical power or something. ADD means you can't focus on something, meaning you wouldn't be any good at either of those things because you don't have the patience to practice them.

I wonder how many times he rehearsed this. I mean, it's easy to solve a Rubik's cube when you are the one who "scrambled" it up. All you have to do is your movements in reverse. Add some time in between each one, and it looks like you're "thinking". lol.

I think the fact that he's playing GH while looking in a mirror is probably the most impressive part of the whole thing. I couldn't do a Rubik's cube to save my life but I know plenty of people who can do them with little to no trouble. I also could not beat that song (I'm awful at HO-PO sections of RB and GH songs) without excessive practice. However, if I was watching the game through a MIRROR? Forget about it, no chance in hell I could ever even come close to that.

The kid's impressive. That's for sure.

Mother of fuck! I hate this machine! Anyways....

I think Hamza's got it right. ADD is mostly an illness that affects a persons motivation. If a person with ADD is uninterested in something, he will not produce enough dopamine to focus properly on that task. However, people with ADD/ADHD tend to hyperfocus on tasks they are interested in. Wich may be the case with this kid here.

One skill I see is being able to multi task well. Most people can do one task well, but they start to be of lower quality when more than one task is at hand, which we see a little evidence of here with only a 77% score (I'm sure he can do much better without a puzzle in his hand). He still does a great job at both tasks. Another skill I see in this video is the ability to see a goal through to its end. So many people start things but never see them through to the end. Either because it becomes too hard or they become uninterested. I'm sure this kid probably tried this multiple times, many of which ending in failure. However, he was able to complete his goal. If this kid can use that same motivation in college or what ever career he chooses, Im sure he is going to be very successful.

It's actually very impressive, and I love how you guys downplay it. If he were to focus this sort of physical and mental acuity in sports, martial arts, and similar areas he would be very impressive and likely a very well awarded person.

Too bad his parents haven't directed him well enough in life to achieve greatness with something more purposeful.

There's no mental acuity here. He memorized a pattern (Guitar Hero) and implemented an algorithm he didn't invent (Rubik's Cube). Anyone could do this given enough practice time.

I watched this video again, and I think I know how he pulled off the mirror. He put the game into lefty mode so it would still "feel" right as he looked at the mirror image. Typically GH and RB charts will move from left to right as a note ascends in pitch, much like you would move up (towards the body) a fretboard when playing a real guitar to raise pitch. If you want the video during some of the "slower" parts, the melody will go up in scale while the notes (as we see them on the screen) descend. If you were to look at the mirror image, the fingering would correct for left-handed fretting (as opposed to the right-handed fretting of lefty mode). It's still impressive though, since the colors are different. You'd have to be pretty good at reading the charts, since you couldn't memorize the song by color.

@Electro Lemon:: ¡WIN!

@ -PL- Solving a rubik's cube is WAY WAY easier by algorithm than by memorizing which way you scrambled it. The kid would be doing himself no favors by trying to memorize a pattern here.

Things I learned from watching the video with the annoying youtube pop-up messages still left on: he practiced for a couple hours at a time, when he had the time, for a couple weeks. 2) he's using a mirror so that he can be in view of the camera as well as the screen. Remember that time that Lefty flip is just a mirror image of the regular color chart? What he sees in that mirror is exactly what you'd normally see on the screen, so there's no point being impressed by that particular aspect.

Other than that... very impressive, if only for the fact that most people would never even try, let alone pull it off to this level. kudos, millionaire

I think Hazma was talking about being a savant, not having ADD. Or maybe he meant he wished he had ADD as an excuse to not be able to do this.

How the hell do you solve a rubiks cube anyway?
Korolev's Avatar - Comment posted on 08/08/2009 22:41
Korolev
well, first off:

ADHD DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY

Secondly, this is entirely possible. There are people in the world, not many but a few, who can solve a Rubik's cube from any scrambled position in about 20 moves. Yes it is possible to solve rubik's cubes very quickly.

What the point of it all is? I have no idea. But as long as you got the cube part down the rest is easy. All you have to do is play a certain section of Guitar Hero enough so that you can almost perfectly memorize it.

It IS difficult to do what this guy has done, don't get me wrong, I've NEVER solved a rubik's cube, and I don't care to. However, once you know the trick to solving it,you could make a hundred videos like this:

1) Driving while solving a cube (not recommended, but you could)
2) Playing a REAL guitar while solving a cube
3) Solving a cube while making a martini
4) Solving a cube while riding a unicycle (as long as you learned how to ride a unicycle).

My point is that it's actually not as difficult as it appears. The only thing he had to do was learn how to solve a Rubik's cube. The rest wasn't actually that hard. I'd wager $50 dollars that this kid probably failed over 40 times before getting it right once.

This kid could be curing cancer or creating an aids vaccine or maybe developing a way to turn pollution into yummy yummy chocolate but instead he's fucking around on guitar hero and rubiks cubes. Hey kid, I got an idea. Do something significant first, then sit around and fritter your genius away on impressing us Internet fucks on YouTube.

If there's a video of a guy getting his girlfriend 77% percent of the way to an orgasm while solving 3 rubiks cubes in less than 5 minutes on xtube in a few years - it's him.
