This just in: Thexder Neo looks amazing photo

It may have a stupid name, but Thexder Neo looks really damn promising, and it's coming to the PlayStation Network. Square Enix's "new" downloadable PSP offering is part shmup, part robotic platformer and a brand new Japanese site for the game went live recently, packing a shedload of assets.

Thexder Neo was revealed as a listing in Square Enix's Tokyo Game Show lineup. It's a reimagining of an old 1985 PC shooter where players control a jet that transforms into a robot. The new Thexder Neo will come with updated graphics, new gameplay elements, an easy mode and online play. It'll hit the Japanese PSN on October 1 as a 1,000 Yen download.

Go check the site out. You want that? I want that.

Thexder! I played the original game on my old-ass Tandy 1000. It was brutally hard.

Ah, a man after my own heart. Would that somebody bring this game into the light it so richly deserves. Sequel, remake, Virtual Console release, anything. I ache for more Metal Warriors!

God I loved Thexder back in the 80's (well I still do I guess). The transformers games could learn a thing or two from it :P

@ Mr Hibbert: No it has almost nothing in common with explosion man. What makes you think it does?

I'll only play it if it opens with "Moonlight Sonata" just like the original.

I wasn't saying the actual game is similar, I've never played it. It just the screenshot reminds me of most of the 'Splosion Man demo. The same kind of setting, similar graphic quality.

Just with more robot.

..Nevermind.

Thexder was good but not excellent. Firehawk, the sequel, was mediocre. Note to developers: bringing back "classic" IP is only cool if it sucks LESS. cf Contra.

How about Einhander or Bushido Blade for goodness sakes?

It looks like Splosion Man because Splosion Man is the first and only side scrolling game ever made.

These games had some good ideas in them but overall they weren't good at all

But I didn't know any better when I rocked em out on my badass 3 mHz, 16 color Tandy 1000 RL
