This happened: Mega Drive Guitar Idol photo

Tectoy in Brazil has this beast of a game system put together for your last last gen gaming needs. Mega Drive Guitar Idol is what they call it, though the name sounds closer to a sequel to a guitar game than a console. It comes with two six-button fighting pad controllers and this sweet-assed white five-button guitar controller. Wicked.

Inside, you'll find 87 in-memory games, including Sonic 3, Golden Axe, and even Altered Beast, all with Sega's blessing, I'm sure. Flicky, even. The main attraction is the included Guitar Idol, which contains 50 songs to play. Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, and Red Hot Chili Peppers were listed among the included bands, all with each band's blessing, I'm sure.

You can find a full list of included games and Guitar Idol songs here.

It must have been a licensing nightmare for them, I'm sure.

So...how come that game gets Smoke on the Water, but it's still absent from Rock Band DLC?

This might be on the up-and-up, actually--if I'm not mistaken, Tectoy handles/d the Sega stuff in Brazil.

More importantly, Flicky is the main attraction. It's a common mistake, so no biggie.

It's sad to see your country associated with a blog post saying "piracy"...more sad is to know this is truth and worse than it looks...

This is actually the MEGA DRIVE 4. Yes, 4. It's going to suck as much as the last megadrive version, maybe even more, with this stupid guitar minigame, which probably could a port from a mobile games, just like those EA games on the last version.

The thing about this system is that it doesn't have a cartridge slot, only the built-in games work and the console is actually (an attempt to) a genesis-on-a-chip or something that actually tries to emulate the genesis, very badly, simple games like Golden Axe and Altered Beast have massive slowdowns, plus a lot of the so-called 87 games are some crappy educational minigames developed by Tectoy thrown in the mix.

It's that much FAIL, it makes me sad.

Tectoy handles every sega related down in Brazil so it not really piracy.

It says on their site: "Representante exclusiva da Sega no Brasil", which means it is the exclusive Sega "handler" here in Brazil. So, yeah, i guess it is all with sega's blessing...

Tectoy is a great studio and publisher, probably the greatest here in brazil

i knew about it for some time now, and apparently it has been licensing hell, but since this is a brazil exclusive console, they could license with the brazilian branches of the big recording companies, making it considerably cheaper

If im not mistaken, the console with everything in it costs about 200 Reais, the dollar is worth about 2 Reais now, so its about 100 Us dollars

The lack of a cartridge slot is a move that they have been making for a while now, it is an attempt at reducing piracy, if you guys want to google zeebo and see how it handles downloadable games, you'll see that its one of those really really smart moves, that probably will never become a standard, unfortunately

oh, and i know these things because y'know... I'm Brazilian

Why is there a piracy tag on this article? Tectoy is the legal licensor of Sega products in Brazil. Or does Piracy now mean "anything that Destructoid was too lazy to reasearch"?

Oh games journalism, what happened to you?

What makes me sad is that Tectoy used to market the Dreamcast in its old days of glory, so it could be whoring it out instead of doing so with the Megadrive

Other than saying that Tectoy was the official SEGA representation in Brazil, this "Guitar Idol" thingy has something Brazilian players have always asked, and probably won't ever get from Guitar Hero / Rock Band: songs by Brazilian rock bands. As much as I don't like groups such as CPM 22, NX Zero and so on....

I'm still waiting for this... Considering Genesis was discontinued in 1995 and the Dreamcast in 2002, maybe in 2016 we'll have something like that

Tec toy has launched many old reformulated video games. I have a Xbox and most of the games are really boring… I remember when I was younger; there were lots of fantastic games. We will see in the future, consoles like this spread worldwide. And if you have possibility, buy some shares of tectoy and be rich in the future.

Some research wouldn't hurt. Not only the games are fully licensed by Sega (Tectoy is indeed it's representative in Brazil), but also all the songs have been licensed from their respective recording companies here in Brazil.

So sorry, but there is no piracy involved here.
