This dude wants funding for an indie game documentary photo

Well, not this dude, in the picture. That's Gregory Weir, creator of Babies Dream of Dead Worlds and I Fell In Love With the Majesty of Colors. He'll be in the documentary, as will Amon26 and Auntie Pixelante.

Basically: this guy -- spinach, he's called -- wants to drive around the United States and interview designers of "expressive videogames" for a documentary entitled, You Meet The Nicest People Making Videogames.

"I don't know why," spinach says on the Kickstarter page, "but right now just strikes me as the right time for this kind of project."

spinach not only promises to freely release the documentary online once he's done, but he also plans on donating all the equipment he'll buy to his local community college. You silly indie kids and your charity. Why don't you just go hug a cloud, or something?

Anyway, you can donate money to the documentary at its Kickstarter page. At the time of writing, spinach has raised $6,381 of his $22k goal.

He can't even capitalize the first letter of his "nickname"? Pretentious prick.

Shit man. And here I am saving up for a new camera and a few hundred dollar tickets for my documentary next year.

Huh. As much as I'd love to see a documentary with this kind of content, I think a project of this sort would be more valuable in the hands of somebody who does "know why" they're doing it right now. Want to talk to certain people for certain reasons, know that you're representing the majority of the perspectives available in the culture, have a little bit more of a foundation.

I guess it sounds more to me like some guy who wants to travel around meeting cool people and who's justifying funding it by getting a documentary going and asking for help. Not that I hold that against him. Sounds tits. I'm just not going to put my money there.

Hell, I'd sooner keep my money and try to do that myself.

fucking nay-sayers

go back to playing madden thank you (joke)

anyway, this does sound like a cool IDEA, but then again, what else could come out of this besides "that is what art is about you know, understanding the humanity and view of the subject and when people finally accept their true desires and passions they will strive to accoomplish something truly wunderful"

still, this will by default be a GOOD VIDEO GAME MOVIE

Ooh, ooh.

I want to make a documentary about independent game developers called "No Art Allowed". In it, a position will be determined that "art" has been determined a lazy, catch-all concept, and is simply impractical for descriptive purposes.

THUS

All interviews with developers and enthusiasts will require that they describe their intent, vision, relationship with the medium, opinions regarding gameplay and narrative and agency, et al. WITHOUT ever once utilizing the word "art".

("Artistic" will be allowed as an adjective.)

I don't know if I'll take donations like that.

But if you want to know about my movie here it is. It's called "Offline Multiplayer". I love the gaming community and how it's transformed due to the internet. It's changed how we play together, learn about games, how games are distributed, and the connection with the consumer and the developers. I'm going to focus on the people that make up the community whether it be blogs, forums, or even conventions.

But that's not till next year. I want to make this a reoccurring thing. I would have loved to have gone to Korea for the Starcraft II launch but I don't have the cash. But for sure I'm planning a trip to Sweden in 2012 and maybe Japan in the future.

Clarke - Will you represent the sentiment of the pre-online enthusiastis (i.e. one of our store's "mission statements")? Considering the title, I'd assume so?

In a way yeah. I want to go film at QuakeCon and Dreamhack.

Heck I have 4 PC's in my house to LAN with friends.

Clarke - Awesome! A friend of mine used to have his basement stocked with something like 5 or 6 spare "bitchboxes" for us to play on whenever we were at his place. I think there's something like fourteen copies of Starcraft and Worms lingering around there somewhere.

I know spinach IRL. He is a bit of a space cadet at times but he knows his stuff. I may include some of his interviews in an art show this summer... we shall see.

Not the best idea I've heard. Plus I've already watched a couple documentaries about it. It was horrible.

Only bad thing is this guy prob gonna get his $22K and disappear forever, pay off his debt or buy a car or something stupid.

Giving money to a guy that I dont even know is stupid, but giving money to a guy who wants to develop indie games is a no-brainer big NO. There's already enough of those crappy games on the market.
