Minecraft and the creativity that people put towards it never ceases to amaze me. Here we have video of a mod for the game which adds elements from Portal into the game, including the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Generator, heel springs, energy pellets and, of course, test chambers.
The PortalCraft mod, in two parts, looks spectacular and the only thing stopping me from playing it right now is my burning desire to encourage you to check it out. My work here is done. If you'll excuse me, I have science to do.

wow, now from the look of that its at the of my to-do list. ne to see theres still amazing talent out there still waiting to be picked up by larger companies
I am sure for the creator of this Portal-mod, the development process was an exercise in intellectual curiosity and challenge and presumably, within the limitations of the Minecraft system, they have performed wonders.
However, it always astounds me that people would spend so many hours developing something like this - attempting to shoe-horn an existing game or mechanism into a system (Minecraft) that isn't designed for these inclusions and has absolutely no application or benefit outside of itself. Minecraft is a closed system - anything you create cannot exist outside of this system. If the system ever fails (or is shut down) all that energy and resulting product, will be forever lost.
Why not exert your energies (and programming talent) into something of your own? Or, equally, use UE3 or CryEngine 2 to produce a unique mod or level? Developers would be far more interested to see your skills rendered through these systems than some Minecraft experiment. Minecraft has absolutely no practical application in the game industry, and thus someone's ability to alter the system and bend it to their whim is not going to impress game companies seeking new talent.
Even if your not doing Minecraft mods in an attempt to get a job, surely the endless hours invested in developing these things could have been better spent learning to play an instrument, playing other games, reading, exploring, learning a new language, developing your own game or art-style, understanding the human condition. Something, anything, which you can take a use in a multitutde of contexts.
@gnosispower: Wow, so because it is not something YOU value, then it is a waste of someone's time? If someone has the programing know-how and loves doing what they do, then why not? Not everything has to be some means to an end. Plus, the alternatives you wrote (playing other games, reading) are all hobbies. More than likely, nothing of societal value comes out of these either, but the enjoyment to be had.
Someone just came from some lecture, "Shitting on other's Fun with main speaker, Dr. Phil"
"understanding the human condition", hahaha you had me there.
@gnosisispower: You could say that about any modding community, or just playing games in general. Is making a minecraft mod for your own entertainment really any less productive than pumping hundreds of hours into any other game?
God I love the internets! This is freaking amazing , gave me shivers all over my sweaty manlike body! Hurr... this is by far the best thing I've seen on a monday for months!
@gnosispower
This is one thing I've consistently said about Minecraft. People spend hours, even days making block houses with no real purpose, when instead if they were to do the exact same thing in Hammer for instance, there'd be a use out of it.
That said, this mod is a pretty impressive feat of reverse engineering.
Firstly - Well done for incorrectly deconstructing my sentiments.
Secondly - You wrote two-dozen plus words just to say "Minecraft Portal mod now out", so sucks to you too.
Thirdly - You write on the Internets as a full-time jobby, whilst I merely wrote a singular reply. To mock me for that is somewhat perverse.
Fourthly - You took the time to read my response, count the words and then post a belittling reply. Very professional and a far better use of time than my apparently over-wrought comment.
I just noted that maybe (just maybe) the time spent on this could have been transferred over to something that would have greater benefit to the individual in question.
And, to slap you back, just because its something YOU value, then it isn't a waste of someone's time? Ego much?
I never accused Minecraft of being the only instance to which my criticisms could be applied. However, the likes of UTE (etc) are used with the actual games industry and are therefore, effectively, a more productive use of someone's time with the end result being, potentially, far more beneficial to them.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Does seem pretty cool though.
@MellowMeek: Go to the source link, someone had the same problem and the developer listed a checklist of actions that might solve that problem.
@wobblefunk: I sure hope you forgot to type "top" before "of my to-do list". :P

THINK ON THAT, MR. SMUG.
