Thief Gold comes to GOG

9:40 AM on 01.31.2012   |   Jim Sterling

Thief Gold comes to GOG photo

Insert the obligatory "It's a steal!" joke here.

A criminal classic has made its way onto Good Old Games today, with Thief Gold now available for $9.99. It's the definitive version of Thief: The Dark Project, credited as a game that made modern stealth action what it is today.

Thief is one of those games I had heard so much about, but never got around to trying. I am absolutely adding this to my GOG shopping list! How about you?

That's one of the games I need to try, after my MASSIVE library is completed that is, which could take probably another...2 years...

This is the only Thief game I ever played, which is weird considering how much I loved it. Excellent!

This is one of my favorite games of all time. It's a shame that it (along with a lot of early 3D PC games) hasn't aged that well. Still definitely worth playing if you haven't, though.

Thief is one of my favorite games of all time -- it was in the golden age of PC gaming for me personally. I was still playing Duke Nukem 3D, Diablo 1, and this hit. Amazing times.

Called it! Next up will probably be the Tomb Raider series.

Is that Nicholas Cage in that cloak?

This game is truly amazing. I played through it so many times... classic! Even though I think that $10 is a little steep for a game over 10 years old, it is a must play.

Yep, must buy. Thief is one of my favourite series ever.

Thief II though? Greatest game ever made for me, and one of the best dark fantasy stories too. The moment when you're just raiding a noblemen's house, a regular normal mission, and you discover a closed-off creepy-as-f**k haunted library where a woman's voice pleads to you from books and her dead boyfriend walks the halls... epic.

Suffice to say, I will also buy that when it comes to GOG.

Square Enix may own at least some of the rights to System Shock as well... and System Shock 2 was also on some variant of the Dark Engine. So maybe this will pave the way...

That's crazy since I installed the game this weekend. I ran into various problems and thought, "Why isn't this on GOG?" and now it is.

An absolute classic. The stealth sub-genre has devolved since it's release, in many aspects.

Awesome, love the original and have played hundreds of Fan Missions for T:G and T2. I'll be buying this just in case my discs blow up (one already has cracked actually!)

lol i was just watching tons of stealth games last night

Shinobido, Tenchu, Splinter Cell, and Thief Deadly Shadows.

Deadly Shadows seems to be the best of the series, plus i prefer playing stealth games on 3rd person rather than first person(though a combination of the two ala MGS and Deus Ex is fine either way)

Jim you have to play it, as a stealth game it is still one of the best.

Such an incredible, incredible videogame. So far ahead of it's time the industry hasn't really cottoned on to what it did right, still.

Master Chief, Cpt. Price and Duke Nukem can go fuck themselves! :D

@PrinceHair: TDS is a good game. However, Thief I and II kick its ass.

I still have the original. It does NOT LIKE multicore or hyperthreaded processors. The version they have will most likely already have the fix that I had to implement. Oh, and if you don't play on Expert, you don't get the whole game. Expert has more objectives ("Also, go and get this gem") and more restrictions on actions ("Don't kill any humans").

Oh god. Thief stealth is so jank. Old school bust your balls jank. Not "I'm clipping through walls" jank.

I think Splinter Cell Conviction had the right idea on modern day stealth mechanics. At least for my tastes. Didn't try the bugger, as everyone said it was the "new shit" stealth for the first half and the old and busted stealth for the rest of it.
