Thief 4 to make GDC 2011 appearance photo

Thief 4 is currently in the weird position new installments of series sometimes fall into: we know that it exists, officially, and that's about it as far as details go. It's also awkwardly named "Thi4f," unless Eidos finally came to its senses and told no one.

The schedule for GDC 2011 has been posted, and as spotted by NeoGAF, there's a talk by the name of "Stealing Sound: Generative Music in THIEF." Not enough? Here, have a sampling of the description.

"Innovative audio has been at the heart of the original THIEF titles and Eidos Montreal's new THIEF is no exception, this presentation will mark the first time that the game has been spoken about publicly."

I'm interested how they will reconcile today's 'accessible' approach to gaming with Theif's old school mechanics.

What a ridiculous name. Thi3f is almost (keyword almost) forgivable considering a 3 looks kind of like a backwards E. But the number 4 doesn't look anything like an E unless you're drunk and squinting determinedly.

Hell, I'd completely forgotten this game existed. I'm glad to have the reminder.

Guys, just hang on, it'll get better with 7heif.

In all seriousness, though, I am excite. Not as much as I am for the new Deus Ex, but pretty damn excite to hear this coming back into the news, even if they have yet to lose the godawful name.

Definately what sofik88 said.

The Thief games have a certain way of approaching stealth that somehow feels right (in a game). I can't think of another game of a similar nature where I spend so much time analyzing my route from afar and then carrying out that said path with just the same amount of caution and care.

Placebic as it may be, nothing beats that feeling. :)

Oh, they'll change the title. "THI4F" is totally a placeholder. I tell this to myself every night as I cry myself to sleep.

Anyway, generative music, eh? I'm intregway'd.

Oh man. This has to be my most wanted game currently. I LOVE this series.

Still, I don't know what all the fuss is about this generative music. Michael Land and Peter McConnell were doing this ages ago at LucasArts with iMuse and it was and still is fucking awesome.

I think Thifourf is a pretty cool guy. eh sneaks around and doesnt afraid of anything.

Anyway, "generative music" sounds like a new way to say "tracker-based music" or something else resembling the iMUSE from 1991. This isn't anything new but I'm very happy to see interactive music techniques still being used today.

The third installment was a bit lacking compared to the first two. Still, that means there's plenty of room for improvement!

It's been forever since we've heard about this one. They could do some really amazing things with this franchise if the tech is impressive enough. I hope it impresses as much as Human Revolution has so far. *waits for killer trailers*

I'm absolutely positive that Eidos confirmed "Thi4f" as only a *working title* a while ago. I don't know if they just said that to tame the fan rage, or they really decided to go with Thi4f, but I'm surprised nobody pointed that out.

Oh my god I got so enveloped in memories of perching on towers and creeping through the dark corridors of the Thief games that I totally forgot about Hitman, GoofierBrute. Well, 2 and Blood Money anyways. I haven't played the original.

And now I feel the urge to fire up Blood Money. :)

i think the only great ip's square got from eidos is Desu Ex, Legacy of Kain and Tomb Raider. Theif and Hitman series are dill and boring.

please make a option to play full 3rd person in Human Revolution and make Legacy of Kain Nier style with more darker than it's previous iterations.

Sweet! I do hope they don't bring Garret back though because Thief 3 ended beautifully. Maybe he could be your techer/mentor and you are the kid he meets in the ending in 3

Well, this is pretty effing sad news to be honest. Thief was one of the seminal video games, a true masterpiece with a new style of gameplay (for the time) and an excellent story, the whole thing. The second one was alright, it stayed true to the original. The third one, wasn't even made by the Thief team and the fact that it was complete and utter shite should have told Eidos to stay the fugg away from it. But no, money is important and hell, its been a few years and we all know gamers aren't the brightest bunch. Not looking forward to the latest Splinter Cell kiddie bs excuse for a game with the Thief moniker.

I'm with severius. Not looking forward to a watered-down new version. I bet they didn't even hire Stephen Russell.

If you really want to know what's the fuss about just check the first one (Thief: The Dark Project), or see the fan made missions here: http://www.thief-thecircle.com/missions/ They're still making these, after 12 years!

Or just see this lovely intro to one of the greatest Thief levels ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc9KbM5N850
