Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

I don't get it. Well, I kind of get it. These ads are trying to be some kind of weird, artistic, over-the-top visions to get people's attention. Kind of like those retarded PlayStation 3 ads with demon babies and other weird sh*t inside that white room. We at least knew those ads were for the PlayStation 3 by the end of the commercial.

In the case of these five new international ads for Metal Gear Solid 4, you'd have no idea they were for the game unless someone told you. In fact, you wouldn't know what the hell these ads were for had I not just told you. For all we could have known, this first ad might have been for a new live-action tentacle rape porno. Which wouldn't have been a bad thing. That makes much more sense actually.

I leave better artistic pieces in the toilet. Four more "WTF" ads after the jump.

In this ad, we see one guy shoot multiple replicas of himself with the tag line "Never a shot in the Dark". Oh yeah, you're such a badass mister bald man. You're so hardcore shooting yourself over and over. I bet the chicks love that dark emo shit.

From an intellectual stand point, this ad really means the bald guy is pregnant with a lobster.

Now this ad has the closest relationship to MGS 4 as I can see. The game deals with Nanotechnology and the robots look like Nanobots in this ad. Plus they seem to move like the walking tanks from the game.

Still, not knowing this was based on MGS 4, I could have easily assumed it was a ad for a new brand of robot scented deodorants.

The menu screen of Metal Gear Solid 4 has a mantis on it. There's a mantis in this ad. Add the two together and you get a Double Bacon Western Cheeseburger from Carl's Jr.

Now this ad is just racist. And sexy.

Granted, all of the ads are cut off so there could be some kind of Konami/MGS 4 logo at the very end of these ads for all we know. But we don't know. All we know is that some guy got paid an absurd amount of money to make these ads while tripping out on acid and smashed up fluorescent tubes. I'm assuming that last part, as it's the only logical explanation I could come up with.

As if this game needed any more hype or attention.

Actually, the last ad mades *some* sense. At least, you can see a link to the MGS, if you're a fan, because in the end it says "Оцелотовая хватка", which translates as "Ocelot grip".

To be fair to Hamza, the gametrailers title for the video does say "TV Spot" so for someone not following every little bit of MGS4 advertising, it's an understandable mistake.

Erm...are you sure these are ADS for MGS4? I ask because...well...they don't end with "RESERVE MGS4 TODAY" or something.

I mean, fuck, the PS3 ads made no sense, but at least they ended with "PS3 is awsum". These seem like ads for cologne.

Wow. I'm surprised how people are defending these videos so vehemently.

Tazar is saying they make sense, but simply recognizing the inspiration does not equate to understanding. A video of women floating around an octopus narrated by a French woman with the worst case of ennui in history is fucking absurd. Yes, these reference characters, and the lines might be quotes of that person's character, but it's still a work divergent thinking.

Next, we have an abundance of people who simply ignore the fact that they make no sense simply because, "this arent supposed to be adds for the game but adds of the PMCs of the game.... " or completely ignore the original post's (justified) criticisms and mindlessly shout gems such as, "Its like the add of the old gay man of halo talking about master chief, but here they want you to believe the PMCs are in the real world, and not advertising it in the game but outside... "
Let's just throw aside the fact that these make no sense (or that they're apparently functions of addition), we're still left with completely ineffective contemporary video trash. HAMZA's criticisms still stand, regardless of their target audience (in-game universe or not) or broadcasting venue; the videos simply make no fucking sense.

I loved HAMZA's critiques and thought they were hilarious and justified. I would genuinely be surprised if some form of controlled substances wasn't involved in the creation of these.

AHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAH! Oh man, these reactions are priceless. These videos were uploaded last night on GameTrailers. They've never been anywhere outside of Konami's site. I still stand by what I said as what I mostly said was very sarcastic. CEREAL INTERNETS OMG!

Even for a fan who can see basic connections to the MGS world, these make no sense at all. Even if you want to look at it from the idea that a PMC had these made. How the hell would any PMC get any point across with crap like that?

Interesting to look at. Basically nonsensical. Hardly linked.

Still can't wait for MGS4 though!

@"flay": You obviously have the largest case of selective interpretation possible, and as your previous posts suggest, your taste is as equally lacking as your common sense.

Please read the article again. The first two paragraphs were correct in stating that these ads were over the top and impossible to recognize, functionally making them worthless without the contextual knowledge of what they were about.

The remaining 70% of the article consisted of sarcastic remarks. How you fail to see them as such only points toward your ignorance. The criticisms were infinitely more recognizable as sarcasm than the ads could ever be called "over the top and stylized [...] practically goofing on the idea war is product in the future."
Aside from the single "Werewolf PMC" clip, they were failed contemporary trash attempts at deeper meanings.

If you're so dense that you're now incapable of taking criticism about something you obviously have fervent fanboyisms toward, you're in no position to call a Dtoid poster ignorant, let alone demand he be removed of his posting abilities.

These days i feel happier than ever for being a MGS fan :)
I will enjoy the game completely ...
Im preparing myself for june , when all the people ( who don't know anything about this game ) will say "hey, the story made no sense at all ! "
please people do yourself a favor and play the other MGS games before the 4 ....

@Pepillou2 : the problem is not the "new" but the fact that this are labeled everywere : "(name of the PMC) TV Spot" wich is correct , these aren't MGS4 TV spots... It is a error of interpretation made by HAMZA ( wich im not mad at because his post are cool, unlike Jim's , i want to made that clear )

I hate to have to say this, but these ads are intentionally satirical, and are not at all ads for MGS4 per se. They are "faux ads". If anyone is confused, think about the fake commercials in Robocop to get a better idea of what's going on here.

They are actually pretty hilarious when taken in their proper context. Making fun of them is sorta like parodying a parody, it doesn't quite work.

But yeah if these were naked TV spots, that would be a million pieces of illogical.

@Sinny: I give you props for actually being civil.

@Milkman519: His criticisms of the videos are valid, and due to their tongue-in-cheek design, they were asked for. Just because they're not serious doesn't mean they're immune to mockery. The amount of anger in response to this thread is more surprising than someone being startled by those videos.

@bcrt2000: Oh come on! They obviously make no sense, which means they're goading for this kind of reaction! Why are so many people (not necessarily you) so angered over this?

@vonrichter: Yes! You understand! You didn't call for the poster's head or job to be removed! Most importantly, you recognize that these videos, despite being satirical, are still illogical. I agree that the videos, when in context, are pretty damn humorous, but I still loved HAMZA's critiques.

@Dr Mike: Considering that even the title of this thread addresses the unusual concepts behind the ads, my comments shouldn't be the ones labeled "obscuring," as they were at least pertaining to that recognition (at least up to this point, but the following is done simply for your benefit as you requested it).

If anything is to be deemed obscure, it should be this group of videos. They were intended to be unusual to this degree to help create for the viewer a sardonic view towards the fictional universe as presented in MGS4; they weren't meant to appeal to logic, but strengthen the sense of immersion.
Without being put into any context, these videos make no sense. As stated elsewhere in this topic, these ads exude the sense of being esoteric, but any deeper meaning was clearly only meant to be humorously hinted toward and not seriously implied. The reaction by many on this site was that HAZMA's critiques were uncalled for and in bad taste because of their nature as non-commercials. I deny that and instead propose that they were meant to be ridiculed or at least laughed at. It is my opinion that HAMZA's translations of the "deeper meanings" were completely called for, poignant, and top-notch.

Now, to address the latter half of your request, I must note that in my attempts to discredit any particular person, I never based my arguments upon those stated negative observations. Since it was requested, though: you're a jackass.

as much as I wanted to believe the geniuses at Chiat or Deutsch talked Konami into thinking these would be great TV spots, thus justfying the haterade I throw at ad agencies, as the comments have shown, these are in-game or something like that, and for that they're sweet.

If I saw that on the TV, and it didn't say "Get some Metal Gear" at the end, it'd also be brilliant is a like "Why the F did they just air that?" way.

So yeah, no need to hate, and even if these were the ads to seel MGS4 to the general pop, so what? The game's done. It either blows already, or is awesome already, and there will be enough copies to go around, so we can all have our fun regardless.

but did anyone stop to think about that 8 year old child that was mentally abused and/or lockin a closet for the first 7 years of life - how would he feel if he found out someone stole his ramblings made the pg rated and produced them in a commercial... for shame

all i am saying is we should hunt for him and give him a cookie... then kick him or he or it in the soft part - i say soft spot so that i didn't leave out the it possiblity

but they do make perfect sense - you just need to be autistic!
