In the wake of the murder of a Thai cabdriver on Saturday, and the consequent ban of Grand Theft Auto IV sales throughout Thailand, the country's Minister of Health has released a list of what it considers to be the ten most dangerous video games:
Grand Theft Auto Manhunt
Scarface
50 Cent: Bulletproof
300: The Video Game
The Godfather
Killer 7
Resident Evil 4
God of War
Hitman: Blood Money
While I can't say I know much about Thai governmental infrastructure, I do find it kind of odd (and perhaps sensationalistic) that the Ministry of Health produced this list, and not the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology. It seems that this incident has transcended normal media censorship and reached an entirely new echelon of national crisis: people's health is at stake here!
While Thailand's decisiveness is certainly impressive (GTA IV was pulled three days after the initial murder -- that would never happen here), I'm curious to see what further action the Thai government will take. I just hope they keep popping out bite-sized lists.
On a personal note, Killer 7 really is dangerous. My short term memory has been on the fritz since I played it and my freaking brain melted from thinking about it too hard.

จากอุทาหรณ์เด็กอายุ 19 ปี ย่านจรัญสนิทวงศ์ หมกมุ่นเล่นเกมออนไลน์ ที่มีชื่อว่า จีทีเอ ซึ่งเป็นเกมที่มีรูปแบบใช้อาวุธเข่นฆ่ากัน จนทำให้เกิดการเลียนแบบก่อคดีอาชญากรรมสะเทือนขวัญ ฆ่าชิงทรัพย์แท็กซี่ เมื่อวันที่ 3 สิงหาคม 2551 เวลา 02.30 น. ที่ปรากฏเป็นข่าวอยู่ขณะนี้
นายวิชาญ มีนชัยนันท์ รัฐมนตรีช่วยว่าการกระทรวงสาธารณสุข ให้สัมภาษณ์ว่า ขณะนี้เยาวชนหมกมุ่นกับเกมมากกว่าการเรียนรู้ ก่อให้เกิดพฤติกรรมเลียนแบบที่ไม่ดี โดยเฉพาะการเล่นเกมจีทีเอ เป็นเรื่องที่มีอันตรายมาก และขณะนี้เกมจีทีเอกำลังแพร่ระบาดในกลุ่มของเยาวชนกันมาก โดยผู้ปกครองส่วนใหญ่มักไม่รู้ถึงรายละเอียด เนื้อหาสาระของเกมที่เด็กเล่น เพียงต้องการให้ลูกหลานอยู่ในสายตา ไม่ไปเที่ยวที่ไหน จึงวางใจให้ลูกหลานเล่นเกมอยู่ในบ้าน แต่เกมเหล่านี้ เมื่อเด็กเข้าไปเล่นมากๆ จะเกิดพฤติกรรมเลียนแบบ ซึมซับความรุนแรง ความโหดร้ายโดยไม่รู้ตัว ทำให้สุขภาพจิตเสีย จึงอยากให้พ่อแม่หันมาใส่ใจเรื่องนี้ให้มากขึ้น โดยในวันนี้ได้มอบหมายให้กรมสุขภาพจิต ส่งจิตแพทย์จากสถาบันสุขภาพจิตเด็กและวัยรุ่นราชนครินทร์ ไปเยี่ยมครอบครัวเยาวชนผู้ก่อเหตุแล้ว

ทางด้านนายแพทย์ปราชญ์ บุณยวงศ์วิโรจน์ ปลัดกระทรวงสาธารณสุข กล่าวว่า มีงานศึกษาของมหาวิทยาลัยโคลัมเบีย ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา พบว่าเด็กที่ดูทีวีวันละ 1 ชั่วโมง จะมีผลต่อการแสดงออกความก้าวร้าวเมื่อโตขึ้นได้ร้อยละ 6 หากดูวันละ 2 ชั่วโมง จะมีความก้าวร้าวเพิ่มร้อยละ 11 หากดูวันละ 3 ชั่วโมงจะเพิ่มเป็นร้อยละ 21 ซึ่งความก้าวร้าวที่ติดอยู่ในใจและแสดงออกมาภายหลังคือภาวะของอีคิวที่ไม่ดีของเด็ก |

Ministry of Health Warning: 10 Dangerous Games That Parents Should Not Purchase
The Ministry of Health cautions parents not to buy dangerous games such as Grand Theft Auto, Manhunt, Scarface, 50 Cent: Bulletproof, 300: The Video Game, The Godfather, Killer 7, Resident Evil 4, God of War, Hitman: Blood Money. Young people can absorb the cruel, brutal, terrible content in these games and become cruel, brutal, terrible people and do cruel, brutal, terrible things. The Department of Mental Health might be working on a cure?
A young man, age 19, played one of these games and copied the content within in by stabbing and killing a taxi driver on August 3. We are afraid that other kids will play these games and try to stab and kill taxi drivers.
In a recent interview, the Minister of Health stated that these games are dangerous. Young people can become immersed in them and copy them by doing awful, terrible, horrible things. Parents and communities should not allow young people to play these dangerous games. The Department of Mental Health is doing a great job of telling everyone that these young people are dangerous and may or may not be curable.
These dangerous games are: Grand Theft Auto, Manhunt, Scarface, 50 Cent: Bulletproof, 300: The Video Game, The Godfather, Killer 7, Resident Evil 4, God of War, Hitman: Blood Money. If young people play them, they will probably become werewolves or Hitler.
We will continue to be aggressive about some stuff. The Ministry does and says important things. Unclear mention of the United States of America.
