There will be no imminent PS3 price cut, according to Sony's President photo

Can't say that we all didn't see this next piece of news coming from a mile away. After word spread around the Internet like wildfire that the PlayStation 3 would be receiving a $100 price cut, it was inevitable that Sony would step in to quash the rumor. As Bloomberg.com is reporting, Sony's President Ryoji Chubachi wants to clear up any misunderstandings that notorious Circuit City advertisement may have sparked:

"We have no immediate plans as of now'' for price cuts. Any change in the console's price is a matter for Sony's game unit, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc."

I don't exactly have a working crystal ball in my arsenal, but I'm calling BS on this one. The above canned response is the typical one we see all the time when Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo are faced with a poorly kept secret going public. We all know Sony needs a price cut, and so do they. With a major retailer's ad showing just that, I'm having a hard time believing it's anything but true. Time to sit back, and wait for confirmation to trickle back from E3 -- in a big way.

[Thanks Joe "King Tipster" Burling]

dammit, clicked too early. stupid IE. I hate you IE!!!

I cannot believe that Sony are trying to tell people that their eyes are telling them lies. I know they try and make people believe a lot of things but it is kinda hard to fool the good ol' eyeball Mk1.

I've noticed no one's called the ad a fake yet so there's got to be some truth to it.

Yet once again, a perfect example of the arrogance of Sony as a corporation. Once news is leaked, they'd do well to go along with it so as to avoid looking like the fat kid in the playground hogging all the pie.

You guys and your bad memory... it saddens me.

You cannot trust electronic retailers for "breaking" game information. They are run by old-fogey business types who can't tell rumours from fact. They hear a lot of people clamoring, wishing, and praying for a price cut and they believe its true.

Just like they thought Starcraft: Ghost had a release date, they "leaked" wii and 360 release dates, etc.,

Anyways, Early July for a price drop? I wouldn't quite start the frenzy yet, there still isn't even a killer app to package with the beast yet.

-All the more reason for a price drop. What else does Sony have going for it right now?

Tax is $80-100 for this system anyway, who cares about -$100, I'll buy it if its $200 less.

it COULD be a circuit city sale price. isn't that also how the psp got it's most recent price cut? one retailer lowering the price and rhymes with bony turns around and cut the price cuz it moved afew extra units?

Microcenter sold all 360's at $100 off during holiday 2006. They ran an ad (just like CC) and everyone else sold it at normal retail price.

This could very easily just be a deal they struck with Sony to help boost traffic to the store (we all know CC needs it). I still think the price drop will happen though. Sony needs it. They know it. We know it. It's simply a matter of when.

I think it is just a Circuit City deal for a week and not a permanent price cut. It is very very very tempting to go out and buy one, but my friend has convinced me to hold off. MS just sent me a new Xbox since they could not fix mine, so if that one breaks I'm going to be kicking my self in the ass for a month for passing this deal up :(

Sony @ E3 next week:

"We have a special announcement. Effective today, the PS3 is $499! Yes, we know, we are teh awesome."

*crickets*

And 20 minutes later, Captain Obvious flies into the room.

"Sorry, I was running late, wha'd I miss?"

@Aex

You'd switch consoles just because of a faulty console, even with the 3 year warranty? I'd do it out of game selection and mass adoption before I'd pick up something just because it's cheap.

Call me crazy, but I like my purchases to have a shelf life.

pshh thats a load of bullshit. a price cut is exactly what sony needs right now, and to say there is no price cut is an outright lie. I can understand if they want to wait till E3 to announce it, but they should have at least had a 'no comment' stand here, instead of denying it.

All weekly fliers say that somewhere on them. From the looks of the image, that was cut from another page and therefore not specifically referring to the PS3 price.

Kotaku says more retailers have confirmed the drop. Like I said, "immediate" just means not today. They're trying to wait until they can make a big announcement at E3. Too bad the innernet and retailers have ruined that piece of news.

how many people bought ps3's when there was a 500 dollar model? is 500 gonna sell MOAR!?!?! pob not, make it more on par with it's main competition which is teh 360 then it'll possibly have a chance.
bhive01's Avatar
bhive01 at 07/06/2007 14:36
Actually, Ambulance-Y, the way I remember it, the 20GB model was sold out everywhere in my town and all I saw was the 60 GB model. I think it had everything to do with price. Well, ok, games do have something to do with it.
Ambulance-Y's Avatar
Ambulance-Y at 07/06/2007 14:56
i saw just as many 20 gigs laying around as i did 60 gig. they also produced far less 20 than 60. games do have something to do with it but so do price, and of course reputation. sony has talked out there as alot lately and have promised more than they provide, that is half the reason i'm not buying sony products till they get their act together, i'm waiting for my state side gps, downloadable psONE games sans ps3, etc. games also help too, but with most games being multi-platform anymore, and the 360's controler is more suited to modern control schemes AND it's cheaper whats the point of going with the ps3 other that Final Fantasy? or blu-ray?
