There will be no Brutal Legend 2 photo

Did you think Brutal Legend was a promising, if flawed, game that could have ironed out its problems in a sequel? Well if so, you've been DENIED! Double Fine has confirmed what many of us suspected, that Brutal Legend 2 would not be happening. The news was let slip in passing while Double Fine talked about future projects, so if you missed that, be aware that this is the dismal situation.

Electronic Arts passed on the sequel, indicating that the original probably didn't sell too well despite considerable hype and the involvement of Hollywood Popple Jack Black. Of course, since Double Fine is already working on four brand new games, there's plenty to look forward to from Schafer and crew.

As far as Brutal Legend goes, though, I totally blame Nick "6.0" Chester. It's like he hates all videogames or something.

brutal legend would have been better if they just kept it hack n slash

I actually thought Brutal Legend was fun. It was a game that didn't take itself seriously. It had a hilarious, unique story and an awesome cast. It was a tribute to all things metal. I never did beat it. It did become unbearably frustrating and difficult. Especially when commanding your metal armies. That was the worst part of the game to me. If only they axed that or made it less frustrating but still challenging and fun. Defiantly not a good RTS game.

What a shame. I would have loved to see a sequel.

Brutal Legend was no fun.. Hated the ''RTS'' elements they jammed in there..

Brutal Legend was great, the so called "RTS" elements weren't a detriment at all to me and worked well with the overall gameplay. If anything the game should've been longer and incorporated that stuff more after it "opens up".

It's a shame they won't be expanding on the idea in a sequel, but I look forward to Double Fine's new projects.

Great promise, some brilliant parts, and then that awful RTS.....oh well, let's see what they can do next.

Played the demo, find it not funny or fun play-wise, hate when hack an slash games doesnt have a "feel" for the hits, just see God of War or B. Arkaham A. and see what FEEL is, deleted the demo and forget about it.

This is awesome news. Brutal Legend sucked dog balls, so it doesn't need a sequel and Tim Schafer was born to make smaller scale Indie projects rather than big budget AAA stuff, IMHO.

Hopefully Schafer will stay the hell away from trying to create an overworld and stick to the formula that made Psychonauts successful; linear levels. His writing only works with a structure like that.

I really enjoyed this game although I could see how the bait and switch could leave people sour. Also, I love metal so all the music and references really enhanced my experience.

I liked Brutal Legend, but they shouldn't make a sequel. They should take the gameplay elements, which I thought were cool just not as cool as it could have been, and perfect them for use in something bigger and better.

He's a problem alright. And like most problems all it really takes is a team of highly trained assassins, some C4, guns, and a couple one way tickets to France.

Brutal Legend was good nut not as good as it should've been. Certainly not for a Schaefer game either. Some of those issues, like dialog being cut off when scripted events occurred, were really amatuerish mistakes.

In the future someone could pick up the license and do it justice I think because universe was magnificent but the game had faults most of which, the largest isssues of all the issues in fact, were easily avoidable.

I take this as good news. Not that brutal legend was bad, but it's nice to see fresh ip for a change. Not every game needs a sequel, even if it's good... Does that make sense?

Solid game, but I prefer console games not even try to do anything RTS-like.

I just want Psychonauts 2 and some new stuff.

Also, manasteel88, remember, Psychonauts definitely had somewhat of a hub world with Whispering Rock.

Well that was expected... It wasn't too long ago that Tim Schafer mentioned in an interview (where he diss'd kotick) that one of that while he would love to make sequels for certain games, he wants to be able to explore new IPs... but his studio is too small, he can only handle one project at a time and as such he choose the new IP over the old

One of the most underrated games of this generation. People complained about RTS elements and blamed Tim for not explaining how to play the game properly, I mean what the fuck. The game explains that double team attacks are the most effective ones, so if you're flying above the field commanding your units and see them fail, it's pretty logical to get down on the field and use double team attacks with your units. I just don't see how you can get confused with that.
Modern games guide the player through their stories and missions like he's a blind one-legged mental defective kid. Tip: remember to press X button to attack, like we said earlier in the tutorial at the start of the game 8 hours ago.

Anyway, this game doesn't need a sequel, it's good enough as it is.

I really REALLY wanted to love Brutal Legend; I soldiered on through the game despite the questionable battles (I don't mind the RTS bit r all, if it hadn't been Jack Black yelling "ROCK THEIR SHIT" while the units scratched their arses), I got to the last battle and simply couldn't get any further. It was ridiculous.

Hype and misleading demos ruin games that might have gone fine on their own fuel. Schafer would do well to rememer this

I agree that it's underrated, and I also agree that those who could not understand the RTS elements are basically dumb as fuck. But I still think having such mechanics wasn't a wise decision for Double Fine.

As many have said:

1) Brutal Legend would have sold gangbusters if it was just a hack and slash

2) It had style, and soul, it just wasn't executed very well

Anybody defending the RTS elements; they make true RTS fans cry a little bit on the inside.

The whole "get up personal" approach? A total shambles.

I don't even consider the RTS elements as RTS. I have no idea what to label them besides that but they definitely weren't fleshed out enough to properly call them RTS. Maybe thats why I enjoyed the game quite a bit. I approached it like it was some strange beast I had never encountered before and I ended up loving it. I'm planning a second playthrough as soon as I beat some of the games I have lying around my apartment.

All that being said, I don't feel the game needs a sequel. In my opinion, it hit all the marks it was trying to hit and a a sequel wouldn't do much except improve some of the combat elements. Everything else was already damn near perfect, from the writing to the open world.

Take all this with a grain of salt however. It's coming from the guy who greatly enjoys Scribblenauts. I have a knack for ignoring the bad elements of games I like.

Started out LOVING Brutal Legend, then just "liked" it when it got to the jungle part, then after playing a few hours into the "Goth" section, I simply stopped playing. I RARELY quit games, but the world that started out so awesome and full of wonder was now drab and boring. And I couldn't stand slogging through another clumsy RTS segment. I never felt in control or that I was doing well in those sections. I felt like I was stumbling my way through it. That's not a satisfying feeling. :-\

Still love you Tim, but stick to the funny and interesting and stay away from RTS.

I enjoyed all the metal references as well as the awesome soundtrack. I can see why the RTS turned people off, though. For as cheap as the game is now, I hope people will at least check it out so the game can find its audience.

The only sequel I would have wanted would have been playing Drowning Doom or Tainted Coil single-player, and neither of those would have happened.

It sold tons, though. It cracked a million so it'd be nice to know what its dev costs were. If EA and double fine thought it was a flop, I wonder how much it was supposed to sell?

Of course it would not sell much. RTS still is more successful on PC. Sure, you can cite Halo Wars but the success of this game is not because it is an RTS but because it is a Halo.

It boils down to whether you like RTSs or not, I suppose. Keep this in mind though: BLs action and racing elements were pretty mediocre; it was no Bayonetta and it was no NFS. But what it DID was crack the RTS nut on consoles in an interesting and fun way that wasn't complex or deep enough for my tastes, nor probably for most RTS gamers, but still it embarked on an intrigueing new direction that I would like to have seen more of.
